La Rue Obscure is the oldest street in the old town of Villefranche sur Mer on the French Riviera, between Nice and Monaco. It was built on virgin soil at the beginning of the 13th century. La Rue Obscure formed the basis of the rest of the town’s construction on the slopes rising from this coastal lane. It gave inhabitants of the town certain refuge against possible attacks. The ship captains who were forced by storms to anchor in the bay, could make necessary repairs in safety. La Rue Obscure also welcomed precious merchandise, such as wine, in its cellars.

This is an HDR image of the wonderfully ornate stone ceiling at the back of Peterborough cathedral, I had great fun trying to take the various exposures necessary to make this image, as the place was full of tourists. Still I think you will agree it was worth the patience. The other HDR shot I took in here is this one:

Kyoto`s temples are filled with inspring scenes and places to photograph. It`s truly a photographer`s dream. The stone lantern was a great centre point for the picture and the ume naturally framed the lantern. I hope you enjoy it. !

Sanctuary – Middle English, from Old French sainctuarie, from Late Latin s?nctu?rium, from Latin s?nctus, sacred, sanctify. Sacred place, especially the most sacred part of a sacred place. In ancient times and in the Middle Ages, a sanctuary served as asylum, a place of refuge for persons fleeing from violence or from the penalties of the law. To injure a person in sanctuary or to remove him from it forcibly was considered sacrilege. In Egypt the temples of Osiris and Amon offered the right of sanctuary. Under the Greeks all temples enjoyed this privilege, and certain ones, like the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, were known throughout the Mediterranean world as a haven for fugitives. In Rome fugitive slaves often sought sanctuary. Christian churches were given the right of sanctuary by Constantine I. Abuses of sanctuary, tending to encourage crime, led to its curtailment and abolition. Modern penal codes no longer recognize the right of sanctuary.

Featured in OLD BARNS Around the World! January 22, 2009. / Featured in Rural Around the Globe December 20, 2008. This beautiful old stone barn has always intrigued me. It’s not far from my home, but until recently was almost impossible to reach unless I wanted to walk quite a distance through many large fields. I could only catch a glimpse of it during certain times of the year … and my imagination would spin when I saw it!! In the years that I’ve lived here, a few subdivisions have grown up close by, and the barn is now accessible. It was bought and refurbished recently. Here is how it looks today … lovely … but oh … I wish I had taken that long, long walk, so long ago … to see it as it used to be. This image was shot in May of 2008 with my Nikon D40x, using the 18-135 mm lens and the polarizing filter. Settings: shutter 1/800, ap f/14, exposure -.33. The clouds were added as a compilation. I used Photomatix to create this HDR image.

SEGAL, FRANCE / / Driving into Segal after visiting the Castle of Bouillon, the house at the end of the road captured my attention and began to lure me. / I HAD TO GO INSIDE! Johan check that house out! lets go in and take some shots! INTERDIT! but Johan found a way around the back. The gate was ajar so we squeezed to get in. Homeless people had made part of it a semi residence, where exactly we could not see. / / It was a maze that went up and down and even further down the bowels of which lurked in the earth. We found a stairway that was the only way up. The stairway was burnt out it seemed as though the fire took the top floors only. We helped each other up and onto the second floor. There were no footprints in the ash and the smell of smoke still lingered. How long ago was the fire? no idea. It was very spooky, 3 floors above ground level and im not sure how many below but did not want to find out. /

Another photo taken on the historic Walls of Derry. The Derry Walls were built in the early 17th century, and are the only remaining complete city walls in Ireland. The old city of Derry is one of the finest examples of a walled city in Europe. Canon EOS 450D, 18-55mm lens. Tone mapped in Dynamic-Photo HDR, slightly desaturated and brown-toned Orton effect applied, and some film grain for atmosphere. /

Went for a drive around town today and found this, its amazing how you can take pictures at a certain spot, and go back there on another day and see something you didn’t see the first time..that’s what happened today.
