Dear William; Well honey its been 9 days I have been down here in the submersible, I’m studying the dolphins this month. I wish you were here to see them all interacting, its just amazing. They dont seem to be bothered with my presence anymore. / Ive been studying these beautiful creatures daily and the team wants to test their certain abilities and game behavior. We placed large cubed objects on the floor of the ocean to which they could be tested for long extended periods of time. It didnt take long until they did accept the objects, or even the lights going on when they entered them. Our little friends appeared to love this one in front of me the most and are joyously entertaining themselves daily with little games like, who can could turn through the cube the quickest. The elders are less likely to join in but remain near by. Perhaps their knowledge of such non sea elements are considered a breach of territory or considered a possible threat. / Well I better get back to work….Talk soon! / . / . / . / Journal Entry: June 12th, 2012 / Day 9…. / Quadrant 8 / Subjects: Ling’s Pod / Time: 2:34pm / Grouping: Ling’s pod has remained since dropping the cubes. No other pods have appeared. / Territorial Issues: Ling appears watchful of outside interference, even small fish / Flashing Light Reactions: Adults still unsettled, young adults intriqued / Gaming: The young adults appear most engaged while others try but end quickly, still unsure why / Emotional Stress: None at this time / Time of Cubing Interactions: Mostly between 10am & 4:40pm, seems feeding schedules counter the play activity. ©2007 Lisa C. Canon 400D / Iceberg season is offically upon us for another year. This was the first Iceberg of the season for me. It was a very foggy and drizzly day, but these bergs were well worth venturing out in the weather. / / From the Northern tip of Labrador down to the eastern coast of Newfoundland, the sea that pounds and caresses these shores is nicknamed Iceberg Alley. Bergs born 10,000 years ago on the Greenland icecap dance along the coast and far out to sea, propelled unpredictably by wind and tide, tumbling, twirling, and breaking into fantastic shapes before melting in the warm waters of the gulf stream. / / An iceberg’s journey down Iceberg Alley begins once it breaks off from the edges of Greenland’s glaciers. Dropping into the ocean, it is gripped by the Labrador Current and carried through the dark ocean along the coasts of Newfoundland and Labrador. In the past, during certain times of the year, the alley has been thick with the largest and most beautiful icebergs found anywhere in the world. By far the most famous fictional ghost ship is The Flying Dutchman. The ship has become synonymous with the phenomenon so that “Flying Dutchman” is often used as a generic term for any apparition-type ghost ship. The term may also refer to a real ship that was reported to be seen – often as an apparition – after sinking, or to a ship found floating with no crewmembers on board. According to folklore, the Flying Dutchman is a ghost ship that can never go home, but must sail “the seven seas” forever. The Flying Dutchman is usually spotted from afar, sometimes glowing with ghostly light. If she is hailed by another ship, her crew will often try to send messages to land, to people long since dead. / Versions of the story are numerous. According to some, the story is originally Dutch, while others claim it is based on the English play The Flying Dutchman (1826) by Edward Fitzball and the novel The Phantom Ship (1837) by Frederick Marryat, later adapted into the Dutch story Het Vliegend Schip (The Flying Ship) by the Dutch clergyman A.H.C. Römer. Other versions include the opera by Richard Wagner (1841) and The Flying Dutchman on Tappan Sea by Washington Irving (1855).

Since I was shooting into the sun, it was put through photoshop and worked on with “levels,” “highlights and shadows,” and “Gaussian Blur.” I also gave it a bit of a cropping and changed the color of the sky from white to blue. This is the Concert Hall of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. It sits on the edge of the ocean and waves at passers by. Creation of Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. It resembles a wave arching over the city and I like the sharp lines of the building and the fact that it looks different from every side.

This is not your “usual” shot of the S.F. city skyline and Bay Bridge that you are used to seeing… those are shot from overhead. There are reasons this view is not seen all over the place… To get to this location, there are a lot of obstacles to overcome. Sheer drops with nothing but rocks and ocean below abound, jagged metal from construction jut up from the ground when you least expect, and the keep out signs from the government didn’t help to settle my nerves any either. For that last reason you don’t want to use your flashlight as you head down the slopes for fear of the coast guard seeing you. That makes the afore mentioned problems magnified. So… all that said, it was a calm beautiful night on the bay and once I reached this area, I found this sight so breathtaking that it took me easily five minutes before I remembered why I came to the spot.
