  • La Rue Obscure is the oldest street in the old town of Villefranche sur Mer on the French Riviera, between Nice and Monaco. It was built on virgin soil at the beginning of the 13th century. La Rue Obscure formed the basis of the rest of the town’s construction on the slopes rising from this coastal lane. It gave inhabitants of the town certain refuge against possible attacks. The ship captains who were forced by storms to anchor in the bay, could make necessary repairs in safety. La Rue Obscure also welcomed precious merchandise, such as wine, in its cellars.

  • La Recoleta in the centre of Buenos Aries, is a vast and extraordinary necropolis that has becomeone of the most relevant historical and artistic monuments of the country. It’s were the remains of Eva Peron lie. And it’s just staggeringly beautiful and massive. It’s a world class example of funeral architecture and has been declared a heritage site. Still using film here. Ifford HP5. Then given its dark sepia cast to intensify the nostalgic and removed qualities in the image.

  • “The Blue Door” is a familiar sight in New Mexico against the warm terracotta tones of adobe walls. Hollyhocks add a beautiful touch of color during the summer.

  • The Roman Theatre of Cartagena was built at the end of the 1st Century BC when Cartagena was a Roman colony, in the era of Emperor Augustus. The theatre was not discovered until 1987 and many of the finds are in the Archaeological Museum. / The terraced seats were built into the northern side of La Concepcion hill which had been excavated to create seating for 6000. Santa Maria La Vieja Cathedral, which you can see mainly at the top left to centre of the photo was built in the 13th Century from materials taken from the Roman theatre. By the sixteenth century, the theatre had been lost to fire and its remains built over and remained well hidden by the town of Cartagena as it grew over the ruins, and was not discovered again until 1987. The town was asked to vote as to whether or not, the buildings standing there in 1987 should remain, or be torn down to find the ruins. The town voted in favour of the excavation and reconstruction of the Roman Theatre. My photo shows how it stands today. Once again in the glory of Rome, many of it’s fine treasures still remaining. © Copyright 2008 Squealia, All Rights Reserved /

  • This was taken at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles. It is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city. This is probably the most different photo I have submitted in a long time. I spend most of my photographing time in the mountains 300 miles from my home. I live less than an hour from L.A. but I rarely venture there. There was an art festival going on and it sounded fun so I went.

Built on top of an extinct volcano, high above the city, Monserrate is a monument to human architecture and spiritual endeavor and is an icon of Colombian culture. /

A tiny bit of local history for Ellicott City, from Wikipedia … In 1772, three Quaker brothers from Bucks County, Pennsylvania, chose the picturesque wilderness, upriver from Elk Ridge Landing (known today as Elkridge, Maryland) to establish a flour mill. John, Andrew, and Joseph Ellicott founded Ellicott’s Mills, which became one of the largest milling and manufacturing towns in the East. In 1867, a city charter was secured for Ellicott’s Mills, and the name was changed to “Ellicott City”. It was designated an historic district in 1973 and today serves as the county seat for Howard County, Maryland. Companion piece to: A Seat In The Shade

  • This is actually the side of a circular building in La Defense, Paris. You can just see the security camera/lights at the top. I was hoping it would be lit up at night, but unless they weren’t working, when I got there later that night, it was all in darkness… Many thanks to the Shapes and Patterns group for the feature (September 2009). • Figure out the situation, I’m sure pretty known to you… You fly through thousands miles in different country just for looking at some great architectural creation. You think how you’ll make great shots of this building. You dreaming about it even during your sleep and… you’re there. But what you see… / Your dream is under construction. No great shots, just great frustration… It’s what exactly happened to me when I arrived to Barcelona, to my dream, to Sagrada Familia. This piece of art, probably the best creation by Gaudi, was covered by construction stuff and between the towers of the cathedral I could see just construction cranes… La Sagrada Familia is probably the most famous building in Barcelona and one of the most well known in Spain. Gaudí worked 43 years on the construction of the church, and the building is still not finished (the construction work is supposed to end sometime in the 2020’s). La Sagrada Familia will have 18 towers representing the 12 apostles, the 4 evangelists, Virgin Mary and Jesus. The Tower of Jesus will be the highest: it will rise from the center of the church and go up 170 meters – the towers that have been finished are 109 meters high. So… I figured out how it will be during that crazy day, when will be Grand Opening. I can imagine it because I’ve been in Barcelona when Barcelona socker team won the World Cup. Guess it will be crazy shooting around (just by photo cameras, I hope)...
