This is the old general hospital… / / It was built in 1897 and was home to Newfoundlands first operating room. The hospital has been closed and condemed for many many years now. Rumor has it that many dark and hideous things were done behind its doors, things that are better left forgotten… Only memories are left now that can haunt its dark and terrifying hallways. / / Another view of The Old General: / / / / / / / / / / / / / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography / /
This is an HDR image of the wonderfully ornate stone ceiling at the back of Peterborough cathedral, I had great fun trying to take the various exposures necessary to make this image, as the place was full of tourists. Still I think you will agree it was worth the patience. The other HDR shot I took in here is this one:
Believe it or not this was once a farm house-I know-doesn’t look it,but these folks had style.
The foundation stone of this magnificent cathedral was not laid until 1858. The Cathedral was designed in the Gothic Revival style, based on the great mediæval cathedrals of England, and is located at the top end of Melbourne. / This group of photographs will be my first attempt at HDR. / ( HDR & photo impact ) ======================== / / What it looks like with a frame
The peristyle around Palazzo Ducale in Venice, Italy, where one finds tourists and locals alike – idling time, strolling, reading a book, or just resting. The colonnade, complete with rows of gothic columns and arches, the marble patterned floor, and the grilled arch windows render an unusual depth to the scene. This was taken Trogir in Croatia. / It was pretty poor day weather wise and this place had a eerie feel about it.
This is the Temple Church in Bristol. / Temple Church is so-called because the original church was built by the Knights Templar. The Templars, a society of soldier-monks, was formed during the time of the Crusades to defend the Holy Sepulchre and guard pilgrims travelling to Jerusalem. They had been granted land across the Avon from Bristol by Robert, Earl of Gloucester in the mid-12th Century. HDR and colour work in PS. Comments welcome! Thanks, / Al
There’s a strange light in NYC like no other. It’s as if the light has been bouncing around the same old haunts for decades… so much so that it’s slightly worn and yellowed at the edges. I’d never been to Tiffany’s, but there it was. Dying to see the forbidden treasures under guard inside the luxurious fortress, I wandered about the store oggling the fine sterling diamond-encrusted frogs, and glistening multi-carat dog collars. It was all so glorious and grand… that is, until I noticed my every move was being tracked by stern suited men with ear piece and remote-controlled surveilance cameras. At first I was crushed to be a “suspect”. The more I became ashamed of my own poverty, the angrier I got. How dare they! The arrogance! I only wanted to catch a glimpse of decadent opulence… just to dream for a few minutes. I had just as much right to be there as anyone. Soon, I was gradually herded back towards the multi-layered security gates and back onto the street. Back to the dirty-water dog steam and roasted chestnut aroma wafting and mingling with taxi exhaust. I took one more look back into the forbidden fortress and wished I had actually taken something from them. Then I caught it… a glimpse of that magically strange NYC light creating a dual reflecting dimension in one of Tiffany’s precious display windows… So, when no one was looking… I took that instead. View from inside the Cocathedral St-Antoine-de-Padoue in Longueuil, Quebec built between 1884 and 1887. / This beautiful construction of gothic inspiration has been designed by two architects, Albert Mesnard and Henri-Maurice Perrault. There are two asymmetrical towers in front, a very rare occurrence in Canada, although there are a few in France. In days of yore all roads led to Stirling. Those who had control of Stirling Castle were in control of Scotland. Let yourself be enchanted by the poetry of Stirling Castle. The Grace Hotel is in York Street, Sydney. It was built in 1930 in the Neo Gothic style, was renovated to be a landmark hotel, and is Heritage Listed. I shot it on Sunday, 18 January 2009, at around 7.30am, from across the street. The rising sun was directly in front. The sky was shot from my front balcony on Friday, 16 January 2009, at around 6.30am. The 2 images were then merged in Photoshop CS2. On both occasions I used my Canon EOS 5D Mark II, handheld, and Canon EF 24-70mm f2.8L zoom lens. The building, which I have been wanting to shoot for a long time, was shot at 51mm, ISO 50 (for the detail), 1/100 sec at f4, in Monochrome, on the way home from another shoot. The conditions were perfect and the sky was clear. The sky was shot at 24mm, ISO 160, 1/4000 sec at f3.2, also in Monochrome. Featured by the Sydney Group 21 October 2009 Best viewed large
A Gothic view of the Library of the Canadian Parliament in Ottawa. This vantage point is from the northern side adjacent to the bluffs overlooking the Ottawa river. Taken in Infrared, July 2008. The Duomo (Cathedral), dedicated to both Sant’Assunta and Santo Genesio. It was originally a Romanesque building, but it has been remodelled several times and exhibits Gothic and some Renaissance architectural elements. This is the Cathedral of Saint Mary of Toledo, in Spain. This was taken on black and white film. This was printed and then the print was manually (using chemicals, not Photoshop), changed to a sepia print by me, in the darkroom. The print was then scanned to digital. The seat of the Archdiocese of Toledo, it is one of the three 13th century High Gothic cathedrals in Spain and is considered to be the magnum opus of the Gothic style in Spain. It was begun in 1226 during the reign of Ferdinand III and the last Gothic contributions were made in the 15th century when, in 1493, the vaults of the central nave were finished, during the times of the Catholic Monarchs.
Driving through Bendigo, this is almost impossible to miss, the main centre spire is 87 metres high, and the building is 75 metres long! It is the second tallest cathedral in Australia, after the St Patrick’s Cathedral in Melbourne. The nave was completed in 1901, and the building was finally completed in 1977. Definately one of the most stunning and awe inspiring piece of architecture I have ever seen. After several hours of pleasurable photography, I finalized 2 shots, this one, and a night shot, which will come soon. I hope you enjoy! Canon 50D, 10mm, 5:34pm Bendigo, Victoria.
It’s been weeks and weeks since I put up any new work… been busy with one thing and another… though that may seem like a poor excuse for not feeding the bubble with new stuff…. anyhow….I thought I’d go back to a medium that I truly love… Infrared film… Kodak of course…. not that they make the damned stuff any more which is heartbreaking to true lover of the medium like myself… I only have three rolls left in the whole world… don’t know what I’m going to do for kicks when I use them…. sigh…. anyway…. a new series of works …. the / Silo’s in Newtown. This is a very old building and once was a real silo… now it’s been converted to very very expensive chi chi apartments… / . / and I do mean expensive…. but the thing is that the form of the building remains true…. how do you fight such strong lines? They dominate the line of the suburb like nothing else and over the years I’ve wasted my fair share of film on them…. this image and the ones that follow are as small part of that repotire and I do really really hope you enjoy them…. the Silo Series…..

This is a building at the end of Rundle St Mall in the Adelaide CBD, Australia. I found the style to be so close to that of many neo gothic buildings in America, as seen in thousands of movies etc. I decided on a slightly ominous mood for this one, daytime darkness. Added two textures to give the feel of an old picture or movie still, taken from a magazine. I think this has a slight New York feel to it. That may or may not be due to the fact that every ominous disaster film is set there :) Canon 50D / 58mm, 18 – 55 Textures taken from www.deviantart.com free use stock. MCN: C4EY3-171U2-BRF4J

I decided to turn a few of the pics I had published (see here) into pieces for the folio. This is the rear view of Notre Dame, Paris, capital of France. This cathedral resembles a neo gothic castle from this view. I wanted to give this one a historic look, but it has taken on a more fairy tale appearance. I love it when the piece takes over and creates itself!
