  • From the Northern tip of Labrador down to the eastern coast of Newfoundland, the sea that pounds and caresses these shores is nicknamed Iceberg Alley. Bergs born 10,000 years ago on the Greenland icecap dance along the coast and far out to sea, propelled unpredictably by wind and tide, tumbling, twirling, and breaking into fantastic shapes before melting in the warm waters of the gulf stream. / / An iceberg’s journey down Iceberg Alley begins once it breaks off from the edges of Greenland’s glaciers. Dropping into the ocean, it is gripped by the Labrador Current and carried through the dark ocean along the coasts of Newfoundland and Labrador. In the past, during certain times of the year, the alley has been thick with the largest and most beautiful icebergs found anywhere in the world. They glide majestically along, alone or in groups, obscuring the horizon with their tall, jagged silhouettes. / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography / / More in this series / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography

  • again melrose, south australia A friend of mine challenged me on my Australiana revisionism (in a good way) , because of him I want to take the time to explain myself . . . . . . . . . .as a very infamous Australian ( Pauline) would demand. . . . . . . . . . . . in between dance moves of course (sorry for the very blatant and gratuitous Australianism!). . . . . . . If you have seen any of my recent Australiana-revision images, you will know that I’ve been in mad scientist/experimental mode and I want to test myself to see how far I can take this idea. So any constructive critique you have the time to give me is a blessing…........................ Otherwise you will have to put up with my mad experiments (insert mad scientist laugh here) on an ongoing basis, like the person smiling with spinach on their teeth!!!! Lol. Anyway. This image I tried to keep the background hills and distance (horizon) as simple as possible. Sky, I think should always be exciting so its got s**t loads going on. Foreground, mmm still not sure…........ But the building I wanted to be ALIVE!!! Its a ruin they pepper the countryside here but as a deceased building its still full of character and to me, character is life , I wanted this to burst out! It was an awesome place to visit and get lost in So there you are / my thoughts / my experiment I would be really pleased to hear yours. . . .

One of which is the train bridge shown here. I traipsed across the river one afternoon just before sunset and captured this image from the Indiana side of the river at just the right moment to have the red and orange glow of the sunset radiate throughout the photo. I had no idea that a train would be crossing right at that time, but it certainly made for a nice addition! • ARCHITECTURE IS WHERE YOU FIND IT / Architecture is to do with the designing of buildings and structures, but in its broader meaning it also includes the design of our complete built environment. It can be found in outback areas, on mountain peaks, almost anywhere on the land, even on the sea in the form of oil rigs and it surrounds us in our places of abode. We tend to take it for granted and complain when its appeareance doesn’t suit our taste. Architecture provides us with shelter, places to work, gives us points of reference in our urban wilderness, but most important of all, it provides a fundamental basis for the way we live. Architecture is ephemeral, can be a thing of great beauty, and its elements can be pillaged and used as building blocks by successive generations. Past civilizations are often known through their achievements in architecture and certain works have become cultural, political and artistic icons. Presumably a family once lived in this little house at Fernie, British Columbia. It now stands derelict and isolated, yet it seems to exist as a monument to the toil of hard working rural people anywhere. The image was captured during summer 2008 towards the end of a photographic journey through the Canadian Rockies. Thanks for taking the time to view my photos and feel free to comment. You are welcome to visit my photography website My most recent publication ‘ARCHITECTURE WITH CHARACTER’ includes images of this rural house. Click on image below for a preview.

  • Continuing my series World from Above with a view of the medieval Kisimul Castle which lies on a rock in Castlebay on the Outer Hebridean island of Barra. Historic Scotland site Taken just before landing at the island’s beach airport. At the start of my 2007 tour of the Outer Hebrides, we left cloudy Glasgow to fly to sunny Barra on the only scheduled flight in the world to land on a beach with the timetable dictated by the tides! I can highly recommend this amazing trip in a Twin Otter prop plane seating just 15 passengers, and the first officer doubling up as steward! “If it had been clear leaving Glasgow, we would have taken the scenic route a wee bit lower over the Sound of Mull…,” apologised the pilot. He made up for it by doing a circle of Barra before landing. Please enlarge to appreciate the light, etc. better. • Captured freehand in the Blackhouse Museum at Arnol, Isle of Lewis. Smoke from the peat fire in the centre of the main room is caught in the light from the only window. Historic Scotland site The museum is well worth a visit to get insights of what life was like in this typical old stone house. The so-called blackhouses did not have a chimney but the peat smoke rose up through the thatched roof. This had the added advantage of keeping the roof from rotting or rain from coming through. This is my homage to the generations of islanders who lived in these houses. Addtional information from Ranald: “The tar from the peat smoke made everything inside black, hence the name. The beasts were often kept at one end of the house, where the floor sloped down. The heat rising off them kept the smoke away. A very clever system.” Nikon D1X, Nikon 18-70 F3.5-4.5G. • This renovated stone house and byre must be the most photographed house on North Uist (Uist a Tuath). Situated overlooking Vallay Beach (Tràigh Bhalaigh) an amazing sandy bay. Many hundreds of these simple old stone houses stand abandoned throughout the Isles. Some are now being renovated – at considerable expense – often as holiday homes with all mod cons. This does not seem to be an original “blackhouses” which had no chimneys or large windows and were built without mortar but rather in a cottar’s whitehouse with thatched roof. • The house sits like her heart… Empty, once full of love and life, now the halls echo with the laughter..the joy of their love, Memories of happiness are all she has. He left for work that day with a kiss to her lips, a “I love you” on his way out the door, she waved to him out the window and blew him a kiss..if she only knew that would be the last time she tasted his kiss, felt his touch, she would never have let him go..The only relief out of all this pain and heartache is he didn’t suffer, when the truck hit his car head on, he died instantly. Now she waits, unable to leave their home, not wanting to go on, knowing that he waits for her..she prays for “HER” life after death, to be in his arms again, to feel his kiss, his touch, to make this house their home for eternity, the way it should have been..but again she wakes to the emptiness of the halls, the emptiness of their bed and of her heart..she goes to the window and like a movie played over and over agiain she sees him getting into his car..she pounds on the window..yells for him to STOP!!!..to COME BACK!!!...and like every day he pulls away and disappears into thin air…leaving her again.to her pain, and their empty house. Another abandoned house, Loved the blue color of this place. Nikon D90 / 18-200 mm VR lens
