  • Mysterious feminine face concealed by abstract green forest. Mixed medium: collage, painting and photograph. Artemis is the Greek goddess of the forest.

  • The Mobster character, which is part of the People in the Neighbourhood series.

  • I scanned the original acrylic painting and then I reworked the image in Photoshop CS3…My sister was the inspiration for this painting and she also owns the original :-)

  • This was originally sketched during a 5 minute break at work. It was then made it into a colorful painting (acrylic on heavy cold press watercolor paper). I recently scanned the original sketch into my iMac and worked on it in Photoshop CS3. I have always been fond of the way it looks in black and white…

  • Originally painted in February 2002 with acrylic on canvas paper. I then scanned the painting into Photoshop CS3 and refined it…The image initially came directly from my unconscious in sketch form… / “The Battle Between You And Me” refers to the tumultuous time I spent with my ex-husband in a rather difficult marriage. He is the creature on the left with the sword and shield looking like a warrior on the offensive. I am the creature on my back in a defenseless and prone position having the “life” sucked out of me by him. This is not a hopeless tale, however, as you can see the crown is still on my head (I am still the hero of my own myth) and also, the giant eye and bolt of lightening that symbolize my awakening into the consciousness of my situation and the realization that I must get out of the relationship and move on with my life. And, finally, in the top right of the painting is the mandala, the symbol of wholeness and the fruit or the flower of what evolves from the creative struggle for autonomy and independence…

  • Nephthys was an ancient goddess, who was referenced in texts dating back to the Old Kingdom. She was a member of the Ennead of Heliopolis as the daughter of Geb and Nut and the sister of Osiris, Isis and Horus and the sister and wife of Set. When the Ennead and Ogdoad merged, Nephthys was given a place on Ra´s boat so that she could accompany him on his journey through the underworld. Nephthys is the Greek pronunciation of her name. To the Egyptians she was Nebthwt (Nebhhwt or Nebthet) meaning The Mistress of the House She was described as the head of the household of the gods and was thought to extend her protection to the head female of every household. She was sometimes associated with Ptah-Tanen in representing Lower Egypt, while Khnum and Isis represented Upper Egypt Acrylics & pigment on paper.

  • The First Major Archetype: / In the beginning there is nothing but Ocean, Chaotic Waters and Ice. Wax, ink and pigment

  • Acrylic on Canvas 1m x 1m. This started out as a self portrait, bright and happy like many of my figurative works, but as I continued I was thinking of the concept of authenticity. Suddenly I was squirting charcoal paint over the canvas. My subconscious took over from the conscious. I am so excited about this work. I feel it to be unconventional in regards to my usual style, although I haven’t yet settled on a specific style. This work has inspired me to go on a quest into the realms of the landscapes of the mind and soul and explore the archeypes of humanity. I feel I am about to embark on an exciting journey. Sold to a collector in Texas. Enjoy, comment freely and all my thanks as always – Carmen ; ) (PLEASE VIEW LARGER VERSION… ENJOY THE SYMBOLS & INTERPRET AT YOUR LEISURE)

  • All profits from purchasing this work will be donated to the Wildlife victims of the Victorian bush fires. I associate to the images I create. Looking at what I perceived as holes in this figure’s chest, I thought about all the wounded souls seeking recovery and compassion in our chaotic world. Since that is a very global subject, I thought of focusing on one of my favorite and prolific writers, Linda Leonard whose latest book is “The Wounded Woman.” Her book, “Meeting the Madwoman” is a richly evocative study by Leonard, a Jungian analyst who posits the existence of a madwoman archetype. The image appears frequently in women’s dreams, according to Leonard ( The Wounded Women: Healing the Father and Daughter Relationship ). She makes a good case that the madwoman is a messenger, metaphor and model who points the way to women’s liberation. The author encourages women to acknowledge their own madwoman in order to transform themselves. She intriguingly redefines many female stereotypes-The Dark Muse, The Recluse, The Bag Lady, The Visionary, The Caged Bird-in relation to the archetype. What is especially interesting here are the examples from famous women, literature, films and Leonard’s own patients. The most remarkable include Camille Claudel, Alma Mahler, Maria Callas, Rosa Luxemburg and Rachel Carson—as well as the imaginary Medea, Mrs. Bridges, Blue Angel and Thelma and Louise. Leonard also shows how some of the real women she writes about were influenced by the fictional or mythical women. In this work, she provides a new perspective on how women can break out of culturally imposed roles. She believes that feminine madness entraps women in traditional, patriarchal roles, keeping creativity captive to repressed anger and fear. / Leonard uses more examples than theorizing to make complex Jungian concepts understandable, accounting for her readability and popularity. / Her understanding of feminine psychology is a revelation to men and an / inspiration for woman. It encourages all of us to break the bitter cycle. What is important is that her intent is not to separate the sexes, but to chart paths toward psychological transformation to promote fulfilling and caring relationships that honor the mutuality and the uniqueness of the sexes. / Please view this in the large format. • The Queen holding the symbolic center of herself-her kingdom. Photo based illustration.

  • The Green Man is an ancient pagan symbol of our relationship to the plant kingdom. Men become tree-like, and the Green Man sports plants and leaves and boughs growing from his mouth or beard or his hair. / In the Green Man we have an archetype for our relationship to both the cosmos and the Earth – to Father Sky and Mother Earth. Plants are born from and connect the two. Plants are, like us, cosmic beings; they guarantee that the sun’s generous efforts to pour its energy over the earth are not in vain. The Sun finds ready receptivity in the plants. / Interestingly, the archetype of the Green Man also respects silence and introspection, which are common traits among farmers and indigenous peoples, those who remain close to the land. The Green Man honors for us how rich and deep the roots of nature are, telling us that we need to germinate under the soil, in the silence of our hearts. • Oil painting on canvas (Jan. 2007) / 915×915 x 43 mm. It was10 months after Cyclone Larry Cat4/5 devastatingly hit our town Innisfail (20 March 2006) that I was able to get back into physically doing my artwork. / This work was the first completed. It was initiated from the passion for a small colour and abstract shaped design I had previously done in a journal. The title truly reflects the challenge I inwardly had to face – to elevate my spirit, find heart again, to gather strength, courage and passion to create a body of new artwork that was to be exhibited in May 2007 at Cairns Regional Gallery and has since toured. / Within a geometric grid format, X’s, richly glazed colours, leaf and vessel shapes form the essence for Elevating the Spirit. The subtle spiral movement within the composition subliminally forms a large heart, which I pleasantly discovered only after finishing the painting and viewed from a distance. Can you find it? / SYMBOLOGY Geometric grid – 3D physical world, lattice grid, boundaries Red/orange/yellows – grounded, earth bound, matter, lower base chakras, passion, fire, outer, energy, emotions, ... / Green/blue/magentas – heart, essence, self, psyche, growth, expression, etherial, spirituality … Leaf, spiral, diagonal, patterns – inner, passage, transporters, transition, movement, action, direction, change, interaction, duality, junctions, expansion/contraction … Vessel – of being, presence, container, inner alchemy, holder, giver ............................................ • Self, from Goddesses, Myths and Monsters series These next few heavily inspired by Neil Gaiman’s inimitable “Sandman” graphic novel series. I’ve always admired his portrayal of the Archetypes walking around in modern-day, taking cabs and wearing beat-up t-shirts as they go about their ineffable business… “And Nyx (Night) bare hateful Moros (Doom) and black Ker (Violent Death) and Thanatos (Death), and she bare Hypnos (Sleep) and the tribe of Oneiroi (Dreams). And again the goddess murky Nyx, though she lay with none, bare Momos (Blame) and painful Oizys (Misery), and the Hesperides … Also she bare the Moirai (Fates) and the ruthless avenging Keres (Death-Fates) ... Also deadly Nyx bare Nemesis (Envy) to afflict mortal men, and after her, Apate (Deceit) and Philotes (Friendship) and hateful Geras (Old Age) and hard-hearted Eris (Strife).” (Hesiod, Theogony 211, translated by Hugh G. Evelyn-White).

  • Selfportrait, Tarot series Major Arcana in the Tarot – Justice is represented by the astrological sign of Libra, representing cold, impartial balance – reason achieved through objectivity. To me, Justice is blind and often bloody. Impartiality comes with a price, as does everything in life. In Archetypal thought per Jung, Justice is embodied by the Warrior – hence the bloodiness, again. / This is what Justice means to me. It requires strength, brutality and blind impartiality. If such a thing can be achieved. We’re only human, after all…

  • In the Major Arcana within the many decks of divination or Tarot, lies #17 The Star. Representing the Return of Hope, inspiration and radiant energy, the messiah, redeemer, savior, angel or Fairy Godmother (father). On the positive side, its lessons include serving humanity with humility and with no expectations of any return; opening yourself to receive, by releasing fear of lack or scarcity and making way for abundance. On the negative side, would include an exaggerated belief that you are the only means through which a cause may succeed, acting innocently to mislead others and false claims of godlike or angelic guidance. / Symbolically, the STAR reigns in supremacy, constancy, guidance, guardianship, vigilance and aspiration. Ancients believed that the stars ruled or influenced human life, either as divinities or agents of divinity, accounting for much of the symbolism influencing astrology as well. / Image of a friend in prom gown, edited and played with wacom pen in Photoshop7. • Oil on canvas – 45×30cm original $500 Daughter of Demeter, a harvest Goddess, Persephone is captured by Hades and taken as his wife into the Underworld where she pines for her mother, flowers and sunlight. Her mother grieves so much that no food will grow, human survival is at risk and a deal is struck that Persephone can return for 6 months of the year. This tale reflects the harvest and psyche cycles – as we become withdrawn, then enter back into the swing of life again. Thanks to a photo of the beautiful young Scarlett Johansson as inspiration!

  • Lilith ~ the shadow of my soul
    by tkrosevear

The name Lilith is derived from the assyrian-Babylonian word for LILITU, meaning “Wind Spirit”. Lilith can be found in Sumerian, Baby…

Lilith is a strong influence within my own 12th astrological house, of which I’m currently experiencing…the 12th house is the cyclic period of initiation & ultimate understanding, atonement & attunement, service or suffering, karma and the shadow side of SELF being hidden or embraced. The house that ‘hides’ your secrets, the side of yourself that only comes out when you’re alone, where you keep all traits and behaviors you were taught to stifle and deny. The 12th house is the cycle one month before your new year begins on your birthday…

  • A Tribute To Womanhood A second collaboration between Reynaldo and Anthea Meeting the Mad Woman featured in Inspired by Life 1-10-09 / Meeting the Mad Woman featured in Lifeline 1-10-09 Meeting The Mad Woman is the seventh painting/drawing/poem in our 40 painting/drawing/poem collaboration. I would like to say that collaborating with Reynaldo is a joy and great honour because he is a gifted and brilliant artist and beautiful person. Reynaldo’s beautiful painting Meeting the Mad Woman was inspired by my drawing and painting Meeting the Mad Woman. Please enjoy our Tribute to Womanhood Series. Painting: Reynaldo / Drawing and Poem: Anthea Slade Specifications of Reynaldo’s beautiful painting 2009 Acrylic on 140 lb. Watercolour paper / Meeting the Mad Woman She is nice / She is kind / She is subtle / She is compliant / She is nurturing / She loves so much / She is sweet… / Oh the feminine beauty we all know, / we all love. / That intrinsic beauty that / belongs to women, / we revel, we indulge, / we dance in the flame of softness. / So tender, so full of delight / I love this side of others and / self…the divine feminine. Women have throughout history been / iconized for their ability to nurture and build / relationships with family and friends, / rewarded, applauded and admired in fact. / But this is just one side of the story, / there is another that needs to be told… / and that is of the mad woman. For every hurt that hits her heart / For every disappointment that eats her soul / For every rejection that wounds her mind / For every heart ache that shreds her sensitivity / there needs to be an expression. For some women it comes out in tears / For others it comes in silence and disappearing / For others it comes out in bitchiness / or passive aggression that is mean. / Others become insecure and are / unable to be a sister to other women. / It comes by her dying inside and losing / touch with who she really is. / And others it comes out in illness, / losing confidence, / losing voice… But for some it comes out in rage, pure unadulterated anger. / Why is there such a fear of anger? / Is not anger the other side of love? / Is not anger a healthy, normal emotion that / makes the blood explode with fire? / Why is it many people cringe whenever they / see a woman expressing her anger? / Why do some people run from her? / Screaming she has gone hysterical, / crazy, god forbid insane! But no she is just angry. Passionate! / She is hurt and she has become angry. / Her pain is real. At that moment it is her truth. / It is a raw expression of her soul / Gasping to find breath, / it is her true voice finally finding expression. Anger is as valid as her sweetness and without / owning it she is just half a woman. / Jung referred to this as a shadow side. / Our less pretty side and it was his belief / we needed to embrace and integrate our shadow / side into ourself creating light and shade. / Yin/Yang? We need to dance with anger, / love her, hold her, embrace her with out fear / that we will be: abandoned, / rejected…left again. She is the wild part of our soul / that is screaming to find a voice. / She is the wild woman of passion and sexuality / that longs to dance and embrace every archetype within. In meeting the mad woman we engage the core self. / We chant to fire and burn with passion / as whole wild women. / After all isn’t anger…another view, another angle, / another lens of Passion? And is it not passion that attracts our lovers and / creates our art and yes above all makes our / heart start! Poem by Anthea Slade
