I just created my first t-shirt to put on this site. It was very easy. This is a great feature. It has opened a new channel of creativity and is a lot of fun to do. I used an image of Delicate Arch I took in Arches National Park a couple years ago.

Thank you to European Everyday life for featuring my work Arches which was taken on vacation last year in Rhodes, this is my first ever group feature. I must admit I am not as active in the groups as a lot of people, so this makes it much more of an honour for me. How do people find the time? Thanks again Paul

Photography is easy – or hard. Often the distinction is best recognized as we compare our intent vs. our result. I recently heard of a carpet of wildflowers in Arches National Park. Unusual circumstances allowed me to alter plans and hitch a ride by noon to try to catch what sounded to be an unusual condition of the always beautiful land. I typically do not consider driving 200+ miles to a destination unless I can have at least one day without driving. But the flowers, as reported, first hand by totally reliable source, and availability of a ready ride and company, went well with my always-ready desire to photograph beauty. So off to Moab on a calculated risk. Of course it was not much of a risk. The flowers had burst forth a week earlier amidst unusually heavy rains and flooding in Moab. I knew a week later could be “all gone” flowers or maybe even a new crop of a different variety. My most usual experience is beautiful individual flowers but never a carpet of any species in this area. Down deep, my “ace in the hole” was that I knew, even if the flowers were gone, the rocks would still be there! So really, it took me longer to write this explanation than it took to decide and pack and be on my way. For the other travelers, the purpose of the trip was to pick up a new road bike in Moab that had arrived from Italy. (The price of the bike was outrageous. I could have understood, had the purchase been a camera!) The nice part was the bike riders had just as much desire to ride early as I had to meet the sun – early. Once I had their bikes on the road, I had Arches National Park virtually to myself. It was like Arches fifty years ago! My early indications were – not any flowers – but the sun is going to make it. So I headed to the rock formations that would be beneficiaries of the low morning light. (I had exhausted the morning light before I ran out of morning-friendly structures on the last previous visit.) Heart pounding now, I hustled up the trail. No one in sight. Spectacular. Rock and sand, sky and sage, changing color by the second. Onward, will I be “there” in time? When is the best light? I don’t know exactly, but if I am not “there”, the exact time won’t matter. My biggest challenge became the battle between taking the numerous appearing light paintings or pushing on for my envisioned scene of a specific setting. Contrary perhaps to good writing, I am going to end any suspense, and tell you I was endlessly satisfied with the light opportunities this day. And yes – the carpet of flowers was no more. I could see evidence that my information had been accurate, but the flowers left when they were ready. They did not wait for me. I did enjoy some individual flowers where they had been thick a week earlier. Now back to this morning. I have yet to figure how to post multiple photos together on RedBubble, either on an image page or on a journal page. So, I guess I will need to post the four photos individually and then come back here and insert the links. If I am successful, you will find my mini-series: moods of morning Racing the sun Sun at my back Landscape Arch at high noon Sharing the land Blue sky behind arch and tree
