Military Macaw (Ara militaris) is a medium sized member of the macaw family. Though considered vulnerable as a wild species, it is still commonly found in the pet trade industry. A pair of parrots (Ara Ambiguus) obviously not agreeing and turning the back to each other. Shot taken in La Garita, Costa Rica / You an find this specie in Costa Rica National parks. There are about 250 of this bird in all the country result of a recent count. The Ara Ambiguus in under protection and local experts do verything to grow the population up to 500 in the next years a number what is considered necessary to guarantee the survival of this endamgered specie. / By the way: in Costa Rica you can find 850 species of birds, more than US and Canada together. About 630 are residents and the other are migrants, travelling twice a year.

These birds originating from South America possess a powerful beak that is used to crack open hard nuts and fruits. This bird is removing a peanut from its shell. This bird is a captive specimen owned by a friend photographed outdoors. The shot uses natural light for the most part with a little flash coming from a canon flash attached to the camera.
