I began this series with the idea I’d create something for my boyfriend’s office. The initial efforts were photos of clouds (see earlier images) but I felt it was a great opportunity to do more painting. The plan was to have something that expresses a feeling of nature, wide open spaces and strong, bold colour. Their space needed something masculine and simple, also. Previously, much of the paintings that had been completed were done for the home, for the interior space, with a gentle, decorative sensibility. An office requires imagery which is a little more robust. I had been getting out and about, looking at different exhibitions and artists, and enjoyed the way artists like Minnie Pwerle used big, expressive strokes, rather than precious, little ones. I enjoyed the sense of freedom. Deciding I also wanted to create an ‘expanse’, it is mindfully created simply as an abstract painting. It is without reference to Sugar Bag country or any specific area at all. It is difficult not to be influenced by the colours we see surrounding us-I love bright colour and having spent a year with a teacher who had Aboriginal heritage who both encouraged us to be more aware of Aboriginal history and simultaneously scared us so much about copyright and the infringements on people’s stories and country, I have been extremely sensitive about the journey and the influence. I have done a fair amount of reading on the subject, spoken to the cultural officer at the AGNSW who aassures me as long as you are telling your own story, it’s OK. It also inspired me to teach Aborignal history to my students, as I was as a child and reflects a connection I have always felt to the sky, the earth and the spirit within.

this is one of a series of three. This one is for a commission. Knowing a little about the person, besides knowing he likes red, and abstract, and loads of texture, he’s also gone through big change in his life (new business, going well, old relationship ended) One of the things he loves in his business is seeing a ‘situation’ and cleaning it up to be fresh, sparkling and better than expected. Bearing this in mind, the surface of the canvas was highly textured. There is loads of ‘chaos’ that is steam rolled through, leaving a shining path. It is a visual reminded of his efforts of the day, and the mark he leaves on the world. It is vision of happiness, a job well done, a tribute to freedom and moving forward. I have amped up the colour so it looks great in print.
It began as a pattern and a search for abstraction and happiness in shape. / It turned into circles and stripes. / Before I knew it, all eyes were looking at me: when I just need to be me. / Are they part of me, or something that passes. Or both. / Everything is one when immersed in the sea of love.
Driving along today I spotted this container, so had to go back home and get my camera! I have no idea what the chinese words say, but I can hazard a guess. I was drawn in by the clean strong lines created by the late afternoon sun contrasting with the grungy rusty bits down below. More in this series: /
In Dec 1973, my aunty and uncle embarked on two major journeys; marriage and a year long trip to the Cocos Islands. They told great stories of their time there and Gerry painted landscapes that captivated me from a young age. In late 2007, I finally walked the islands that they so dreamily embedded in my child’s mind. Thank you Steve and Gerry! This is rather a bold piece for me, but still I like it. I would be interested in knowing what you thought of it as well. I didn’t choose to do this as just a form of flaunting my sexuality for the attention. It’s kinda complicated, but I felt it was a good way to represent alot of things that are important to me. My faith (the pentacle), love (my heart), the lace represents femininity, the bright color represents the love of beautiful things, creativity, and standing out from the crowd. The breasts, obviously do represent sexuality, but also my freedom to embrace it without fear of shame, guilt, or embarrassment Even in this day and age, women are made to feel that they must not do this, that they must oppress this side of them, and if they don’t, they are labeled as a whore, treated very badly, and not taken seriously. This is a disgusting double standard, that no matter how hard we try, we cannot seem to shake. Society as a whole needs to learn to respect women and treat them how they deserve to be treated, as they are… beautiful, intelligent, nurturing, valuable, unique, worthy EQUALS! This is how ALL people should be treated. Model: Mama & The Girls ;) / Date: August 2007 / Location: Statesville, Wilson, TN, USA / Photographer: FireLilyAMG/Allyssa L. West Island, Cocos (keeling) Islands When the tide comes in, an awesome white beach disappears (see Infinity) and is replaced by the prettiest aqua water…rolling, rolling, rolling !! The water is only knee deep, but perfect for floating in. We spotted lots of little reef sharks around here – what a magic place they call home. This photo was featured in Digital Photography Placed 4th in the Remembering Summer challenge Photo taken September 12, 2009 at the Atlantic Balloon Festival in Sussex, New Brunswick. It’s the first time I’ve ever seen the balloons being inflated and take off, which has really given me a strong need to take a ride in one. Of the 11 balloons that went up, this one drifted directly above where we were parked, making for one heck of a shot! Post-processing done to remove grain, improve colour, and enhance cloud cover.

This is my first attempt playing with food dye, water and my computer monitor as a brightly lit backdrop. See here for how I created this shot. (The stack of dvds were implemented after this shot was taken) / / This was pretty damn difficult without a tripod or assistant.. One hand holding the camera , one hand holding the dropper, full of dye. Having to get focus on the camera, hold it straight, shoot and drop the dye at once.. I need a tripod haha! / / I had heaps of fun trying to make this work though. Soon learning that dropping the dye closer to the front of the glass allowed for more clarity in the shot. / / The next step will be multiple colours, but not till a tripod is involved lol. Featured in Color & Light / Featured in Out Of The Blue / Featured in The Beginners Corner / / Slight crop of original, adjustment of brightness and contrast for colour control. / / Canon 50D / 58mm, 18 – 55 / f5, 1/320, ISO 1600 / / MCN:CRR2W-5HDN9-7U4H3
Round two of the Rainbow Drowning project. See here for how I created this shot. (The stack of dvds were implemented after this shot was taken) / / Was holding the camera portrait for these ones, to get a bit more depth and length in the shots. The dye squirted harder than expected, causing a fast and long rippling effect in the water. / / Loved the contrast between light and dark in these ones and the background blur too. / / Crop of original shot, with adjustment of brightness and contrast. No other enhancements to this series. Featured in The Male Photographer / / Canon 50D / 58mm, 18 – 55 / F5.6, 1/80, ISO 400 / / / / / / MCN:CW9F2-AMK6S-WPAKR
This is simply, milk with green food dye and a spot light shining down into it. The dye eventually spread through it, making it look quite toxic. I layered the image once, dulling the colour on one layer, and brightening on the other. Slight crop of original. The vivid lighting gave me high contrast and accentuated the darkness of the green centre.
