Well, my leopard mare finally decided it was time to foal mid-morning 3rd Nov 2008, waiting especially for a night I didn’t camp out for her – typical !!!! However, this wee beauty made all the cold, uncomfortable, sleepless nights on a camp bed worthwhile – welcome to “Skyhorse Colidascope” (paddock name yet to be decided upon). She is a grulla buckskin (not a particularly common colour) complete with primitive dorsal stripe & shoulder barring – will be able to see if there is leg barring as well when she gets a little older & loses some foal fuzz …
The beautiful Appaloosa is a breed of horse, and not a color. Not all Appaloosas have a coat pattern; Appaloosas can come in solid colors as well. And there is much more to the Appaloosa than its color or coat pattern. Appaloosa horses, based on Spanish stock, were originally bred in the Inland northwest of America by the Nez Perce Indians, the only Native Americans known to selectively breed their horses. The breed almost died out after the U.S. cavalry slaughtered the Indian’s horses after chasing the tribe into the Bear Paw mountains of Montana. Appaloosas are very versatile having great endurance and excellent dispositions. They are hardy, strong, fast, sure footed and have a quiet temperament. Although they can be stubborn, most Appaloosas are extremely intelligent and willing. Tthe Appaloosa is used in a wide variety of sports, from rodeo, to jumping, and showing, and it is a good trail riding and long distance horse. / /

This is my non-spotted appaloosa colt Jack, aged 12 days & already very people friendly. As a Leo, he insists on being the centre of attention (just like his appaloosa mother, Harli – in fact they both have Aug 14 as their birth date). August 2007 / Pentax Optio E20
Like his sister, Stardust, my wee colt Jack is growing up & is now 10 months old. In his case, he’s turning into a fine, handsome fellow …
All tuckered out after standing for a few hours & suckling off mum, poor wee girl needs a lie-down! I’m very lucky that my mares are so used to me being in their space, even though they pull threatening faces at me they never actually back it up by charging at me, rather they move away in a huff (beware to strangers though, they’d be shown teeth & heels up close!)
