A tribute to The Goddess Marilyn, from my “Black Butterfly” series. From a reference photograph of the last sitting by Bert Stern. Charcoal and pastel on mylar drafting film, 20×16” The butterflies in this case symbolize the artist’s muse – and also are a premonition of the death of the goddess. The drafting film is translucent, so I have used a white paper under the film for brightness on this ethereal subject. I work on the frosted side of the paper for tooth. The mylar lends a lovely soft effect.
Aphrodite and her son Eros, Goddess and God of Love. Muse, tell me the deeds of golden Aphrodite the Cyprian, who stirs up sweet passion in the gods and subdues the tribes of mortal men and birds that fly in air and all the many creatures that the dry land rears, and all that the sea: all these love the deeds of rich-crowned Cytherea. / —Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite 5.1–5 More Olympians / / / /
i just wanted to be there, it was the only place I could find peace.
Another shot of Aphrodite Rock, Paphos, Cyprus. Legend has it if you swim around this rock three times at midnight on a full moon, naked – you will be given the gift of eternal youth – sigh, a bit late for me I am afraid :) I love to swim, but three times at midnight – I mean, come on! Besides, the water here was very cold, despite the blazing heat. I decided to just lean against it instead :) or did I?
when i fall / will you be there / will you kiss my lips when im cold and stiff / close my eyes from the abyss / cover my naked flesh and hip / if i lived till 95 / and i asked you then to let me die / what would be your reply /
The magical girdle of Aphrodite had the power to inspire the passion of desire. Hera, in her role as the goddess of marriage, occasionally borrowed it from Aphrodite to reunite quarreling spouses in love and to inspire the bridal contests of suitors. source: theoi.com

Aphrodite A Grecian Goddess of the sea. She is the Goddess of love, beauty, sensuality. The phrase “goddess of love” in Sanskrit translates as ‘she who has a fish as her emblem.’ One vision of her is mounted on a dolphin. She carries a casket representing life, death and rebirth. According to one belief, dolphins carried the souls of dead to the Underworld. She like Venus was born of the sea. She is associated with all the creatures of the sea. She represents the sea which is life giving and She is seen as hope. She is the Goddess of both physical and spiritual love. / / WARNING / ©2008 Globalphotos All rights reserved. / All photographs, text and images by Globalphotos are the exclusive property of Globalphotos – protected under Australian and international copyright laws. / These images may not be reproduced, copied or manipulated without written permission. / No use for Public Domain. / Use of any image for another photographic concept or illustration is a violation of copyright.
The hare and rabbit feature in almost every mythology as trickster, culture hero or fertility symbol. The animals are noted universally for their swiftness and playful behaviour, and they occur in myth as cunning jokers who outwit bigger but less agile creatures. In Ancient Greece rabbits were seen as the attributes of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and sexuality. The creatures are widely associated with moon, itself a symbol of feminine fecundity. Due to her immense beauty Zeus was frightened that Aphrodite would be the cause of violence between the other gods. He decided to marry her off to Hephaestus, a dour, humourless god. / Original pen and ink design by Mike Paget 2008.
