A fascinating and beautiful beach on the west coast of Norway. These huge boulders roll in and out when the powerful North Seas waves hit them. It makes an eerie and almost frightening sound.
In the middle of her favorite dandelion meadow she stops…fascinated by a single flower out of many…before she continues on her way…
Contemplative Native American Dancer waiting to enter the ring at the “wacipi”.
Siv on the beach. This is a friend of mine who I have used as a model many times. She was Miss Norway a few years ago.
Love this little lone tree. Trying to capture every season…have winter and fall so far. Somehow I missed summer and spring….next year maybe? 1st place in the Calendars R Us Challenge and Featured on the Red Bubble Home Page.
Beautiful Aztec dancer at a Native American Powwow. She glowed with such an inner beauty and danced like a Goddess. It was hard to take your eyes off of her!
Reeds in the water. Fascinating…the base of each reed had a small water bubble reflecting the setting sun. Sandnes, Norway.
Wonderful window buried in the very thick stone wall of a Middle Ages Monastery on the west coast of Norway.
Now, here is a good story….I was out photographing some old buildings on a rustic Norwegian farm one sunny spring morning and my eye caught these old wool long johns flying in the wind on the clothesline. I stopped in my tracks…fascinated by the sight. All I could think of was how they looked like they were dancing with joy – happy to finally be set free out in the fresh spring air. It took me a lot of convincing to talk the elderly farm wife into letting me take this shot. She was horrified at the thought, but graciously accepted my creative eccentricity in the end, shaking her head and mumbling all the while. .....They look like they are on a backdrop, but that is the blue sky…..really!
Portrait of my daughter in Art Alley close to where we now live.
Hand of a male dancer at a powwow in the Black Hills. The beadwork is amazing!
A bright and beautiful young lady who had immigrated to Norway from Africa. I felt very fortunate to meet and photograph this extraordinary girl….her eyes held so much warmth despite the challenges she had faced in her life….
I grew up in the Dakota’s in the USA and was quite used to snow…sand was not so usual here. The first time I saw snow and sand together in Norway, I was amazed! I had always thought that when there was sand, there was warmth! WRONG!
Taken after the first frost this winter…..ice crystals on the leaves….
A weathered old farmer in Norway. He was extremely intelligent. They said he had read the bible from cover to cover by the time he was 17. Not particularly religious. Just curious. He lived in a container on his land after his house burned down many years ago…..He had some great stories to tell! A bit of a recluse, but charming, none the less. He biked to town once a week on this old bicycle to take a shower at the local swimming hall. One day on the way home he got sideswiped by a car in the dark. Didn’t get hurt, but his false teeth flew out and he couldn’t find them. He told me he got them back in the mail several weeks later….Someone had found them by the side of the road. Apparently they were afraid to drop them off in person.
Small Dancer letting the photographer know he was no pushover.
This little one-house island in Norway looked like a fairytale place to live…..

My best friend when I lived in Norway was a 90 year old retired doctor. As a young man he had dreamed of being an architect or a muscian, but ended up choosing the practical route and became a doctor. Even at 90 he still talked about his life long dream of designing homes and playing music. He kept a piano in his home – always tuned – and owned several violins, including a special Norwegian violin called a “Hardangerfele”. He loved sharing his stories of travelling to Denmark in the summers and playing music with a group of Norwegian musicians when school was over for the summer. He had such fond memories of these times – I could listen to him talking all day long…..we would sit in his kitchen or out in his garden sharing a glass of wine, ltalking and laughing. This is a photo I took of one of his violins. This photo is in honor of his dreams…..he died a couple of years ago. I miss you terribly, dear friend.
A seemingly never-ending sunflower field overlooking the Black Hills in South Dakota. I think you could walk for hours and not ever reach the other end….
I wish you could have been with me when I took this shot. I had run out of slide film, and only had some very old and outdated negative film left in my camera bag, when I came upon this delicate, but strong blade of grass. Despite sub zero temperatures and a frigid and vicious South Dakota winter wind, this grass seemed to be stretching gracefully and hopefully towards the last rays of the winter sun before it ducked behind the trees for the night. I was amazed by the simple beauty that this single blade of grass presented to me that day. It made me remember that even when times are tough there is always a ray of hope if you search for it. It touched me in a way that I can’t put into words. This photo is dedicated to my dear friend, Barb Johnson, who we lost to cancer. She fought hard. I pray she is in a good place now.
Sometimes a combination of life events makes you wonder if you can pull through and rise above all that life throws at you. Sometime it all seems so dismal and hopeless. But if you take a deep breath and look around you, you will see the small miracles in your every day….the beauty in a bouquet of dried sunflowers almost shaped like a heart – , the winter light dancing on snow….there is always something to rejoice in. Grab onto those moments and soar above the hopelessness and sorrow that is holding you down. And you will find that you are heading towards a better day. Promise.
This place…secluded…alone…in the desolate prairies of Wyoming. Somebody’s dream….their first home….raising kids and trying to make it off of the land. And now the dreams are faded…..people moved away. Too hard to make it out here….but still beautiful, even when abandoned. / *Orton effect by Don Miguel
