I stood watching this young bonobo ape (an endangered species related to the chimpanzee) for a while, and I noticed that after a bit he was watching me, too. So I started talking to him, simple things like “Hello there,” and “Aren’t you handsome?” (Yes, people gave me funny looks, and no, I didn’t care.) He actually seemed to like it, and we gestured and held eye contact for a couple of minutes. Then, some people strolled up next to me and started making obnoxious “monkey noises” and saying “Heyyy monkey monkey” and so on. Now, bonobos are not monkeys, they are apes, and they do not make “monkey noises,” and I could clearly see that this little guy found all of this annoying. So, after a moment, he purposefully stood up, turned around, bent over, and put his head between his legs as you see here. I don’t think the monkey-noise people really got it, but I did, and I so wish I could have given him a high-5. :P In conjunction with the Primates Group’s fundraising efforts, 100% of the profits from the sale of this image will be donated to Gorilla Haven.

And you think your job is rough? These are two beautiful northwest Bornean orangutans. Bornean orangutans are classified as endangered, although they are in better shape than their cousin the Sumatran orangutan. Overall, the population of orangutans in Indonesia in the 20th century declined by an estimated 90%. Their major threats are habitat destruction, the bushmeat trade, and the kidnapping (ape-napping?) of young orangutans for the pet trade (which generally entails killing the mother). Interestingly, there is an orangutan sanctuary in Borneo called the Sepilok Rehabilitation Center where orphaned and injured orangutans are cared for and released if appropriate. Sepilok is doing great things working toward orangutan conservation, but it also is doing great things for the human population of Borneo… As Borneo’s biggest tourist attraction, Sepilok has enhanced the Bornean economy, created new businesses, and created new jobs. Sepilok is a great example of how we can help save endangered species, preserve wilderness areas, and help ease poverty and human suffering all at the same time. It doesn’t have to be humans or other animals—with proper planning and thought, all can benefit. In conjunction with the Primates Group’s fundraising efforts, 100% of the profits from the sale of this image will be donated to Gorilla Haven.

Your time with them goes so fast you are left just wanting more… / / / Unfortunately, Mountain Gorilla numbers are small, with only approximately 700 left in the wild. • You Don't Say?
    by Lisa G. Putman

    US$4.99–US$133.00

The Sumatran Orangutan (Pongo abelii) is the rarer of the two species of orangutans. Living and endemic to Sumatra island of Indonesia, they are smaller than the Bornean Orangutan. The Sumatran Orangutan grows to about 4.6 feet tall and 200 pounds in males. Females are smaller, averaging 3 feet and 100 pounds. Compared to the Bornean Orangutan, the Sumatran Orangutans possess a lighter and longer pelage, a longer face, a smaller stature, and flanges that are covered in small white hairs. Wild Sumatran Orangutans in the Suaq Balimbing swamp have been observed using tools. An orangutan will break off a tree branch that’s about a foot long, snap off the twigs and fray one end. It then will use the stick to dig in tree holes for termites. They’ll also use the stick to poke a bees nest wall, move it around and catch the honey. In addition, orangutans use tools to eat fruit. When the fruit of the Neesia tree ripens, its hard, ridged husk softens until it falls open. Inside are seeds that the orangutans love, but they are surrounded by fiberglass-like hairs that are painful if eaten. A Neesia-eating orangutan will select a five-inch stick, strip off its bark, and then carefully collect the hairs with it. Once the fruit is safe, the ape will eat the seeds using the stick or its fingers. Although similar swamps can be found in Borneo, wild Bornean Orangutans have not been seen using these types of tools. Don’t miss out on these other animal images: ! - - - /

For me this is my best photo ever. I was in safari park and it was very difficult for me to watch all these baboons inprisoned and sadness in their eyes was extreme strong. I love animals very much and at my home I have quite a ZOO. I try to do so much for them, to rescue them, if nothing else I feed now so many birds in my yard, this is at least what anybody can do.This image change my way of thinking about us humans very much. I hope this image will move you the way it moved me and force you to do something good for animals. Thank you very much for viewing my work. Xenia!
