Hippopotamuses are one of the largest extant mammals in the world.Hippos are considered megafauna, but unlike all other African megafauna, hippos have adapted for a semi-aquatic life in fresh water lakes and rivers. For additional protection from the sun, their skin secretes a natural sunscreen substance which is red-colored. The secretion is sometimes referred to as “blood sweat,” but is neither blood nor sweat. This secretion is initially colorless and turns red-orange within minutes, eventually becoming brown. Two distinct pigments have been identified in the secretions, one red and one orange. The two pigments are highly acidic compounds. They are known as red pigment hipposudoric acid and orange pigment norhipposudoric acid. The red pigment was found to inhibit the growth of disease-causing bacteria, lending credence to the theory that the secretion has an antibiotic effect. The light absorption of both pigments peaks in the ultraviolet range, creating a sunscreen effect. All hippos, even those with different diets secrete the pigments, so it does not appear that food is the source of the pigments.
Awake or asleep, it matters not to me, so make your preparations. / And say your final prayers. In the end I will utterly annihilate you.
I have always prided myself on the fact I rarely get sick, and on those rare occasions when I do get a cold or flu it is usually done and dusted in 24 hours and I’ve hardly missed a beat. / I have, I admit, even tended to look down my nose a little at those who succumb to such things as being…weak somehow. Today I am humbled as I progress into day 6 of a flu which still has a grasp on me and which, a few days ago, reduced me to a feeble little mess of humanity begging for some relief. I am not kidding. Today I am feeling more like myself but I am taking nothing for granted just yet. I guess I have learned respect, with a club – and every symptom of flu you can have. Be careful people. My Doc said this particular SuperFlu has an average cycle of 10 to 14 days! Bloody hell, what have we been breeding with our antibiotics?
i saw a guy on a train in tokyo with this odd slogan boldly slapped across his over-sized calico bag. it was just big black text, but it stuck with me (god i love japlish) and therefore i decided to give it a face. thankyou random tokyo funkster *BELIEVE IT OR NOT – THIS TEE HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH SWINE FLU….IT WAS CREATED LONG BEFORE THE CURRENT EPIDEMIC…......(was said tokyo funkster in actual fact some kind of mystical disease prophet..?...) HOWEVER, IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO DENY THAT IT REPRESENTS IT PERFECTLY, AS MANY HAVE POINTED OUT TO ME!! so i have succumbed and entered it in the swine flu challenge….so give it a vote if you like it! thanks! featured in beige is death
