I wanted 1942 to serve as an experiment, questioning what stereotype if any surrounded the ‘skinhead.’ Within days I received comments of ‘racist’ and ‘Nazi’ signifying prejudice against a shaven head, when in modern day society diversity is usually praised and encouraged. The origin of the term ‘skinhead’ is not rooted in racism, the term being corrupted in the 1970’s by the neo-nazi movement. The term actually stems from the Jamaican skinheads such as Bunny Wailer, who populated Reggae in the1960’s, some decade previous. By 1968/69, the ‘skinhead’ wasn’t just a hairstyle but a way of life. To these working class people, cleanliness, stylish clothes and good music were dominant. The increasing popularity of Ska music, a branch of reggae bred the skinhead in their straight jeans, large boots, white shirts, braces and nylon or leather jackets and were regularly seen at Judge Dread gigs. Doc Marten, Ben Sherman, and Vespa scooters were typical designers of the ‘skinhead’ movement, which dwindled in the mid 70’s. This is around the time the neo-nazi movement became prominent, as the ‘mod generation’ became divided and those racist, political hating, violent youths were the new face, the new stereotype. They popularised themselves throughout the 80’s and 90’s with bands such as ‘Skrewdriver’ and were akin to increased violence on Adolf Hitler’s birthday. The number of ‘skinheads’ in Britain today is in decline, as in essence the skinhead is a youth organisation for the youth. Thus upon reaching full maturity, starting a family and encompassing different values the need to be in such a group no longer exists and without the experience and knowledge of older members their ‘skinhead’ values are degenerate. This is why I felt my experiment was necessary. Would the youth of day, born after the domination of the neo-nazi still be aware of their values and the attributes, which contribute to their stereotype? The answer lies within you the spectator. Consider what you first felt upon viewing 1942. Did it bring back fond memories of dancing to reggae, Bob Marley and the ‘Chelsea haircut’ or did it make you envisage violent racists? Movements begin, grow and they pass. The real reason the ‘Mods’ shaved their head was to avoid lice, for hygiene. Surely the time close cut hair symbolising a racist has passed. This was a series i took a while back for a project i was doing on fashion and surrealism I must have took around 30 or so photographs to get the best images at different stages. / to take these shots i used a canon 20d propped up on a tripod with a self timer.

Child’s Play – Think Again / The AK-47 Russian automatic rifle designed in 1947, is amongst the most smuggled weapons of recent times, finding its way to conflicts in the Balkans, Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia. / In countries like Rwanda, Mozambique, Congo and Ethiopia this weapon was used by up to 100,000 children in armed conflict in 2005. Today it is estimated that there are between 200,000-300,000 children serving as soldiers for rebel groups and government forces in current armed conflicts. / Source – Human Rights Watch Child’s Play 2 / Selected other RubyRed shirts: / / /

The science of dressing well is the art of knowing what is appropriate for the occassion.

Even ‘though Incognita completely agreed with Inky that patriotism is the last refuge of scoundrels… she just COULDN’T make herself nationalistic. “Oh well” she decided, “I’ll probably find some other way to cause trouble…”

Bin The Cluster Bombs / More than 100 countries attending a conference in Dublin, Ireland formally adopted a treaty to ban cluster bombs – a large, unreliable and inaccurate weapon that often affects civilians long after the end of armed conflict. Some of the biggest makers and users of cluster bombs cited by human rights groups, such the United States, Russia, China and Israel, were not involved in the talks and did not sign the accord. Organizers expressed hope that those nations would nevertheless be pressured into compliance. / Source: CNN Selected other RubyRed shirts: /

Cog sincerely wants to believe that a greater being cares about her personally
by IncognitaUS$4.28–US$114.00
Studly frequently comments (to himself, naturally) that this simply reflects Cog’s belief that she IS the centre of the universe. He can’t imagine why she would need an imaginary friend when she has him.

The people of Geelong are busy protesting AGAINT or lobbying FOR fluoridation of their water. As I use a purifier anyway, it would be hippocritical of me to produce a pro-fluoride t-shirt, so here’s one for the anti-fluoride lobby. Geelong is one of the few places you can get pure water from the tap (other than chlorine and all the other additives of course) so it’s a big and emotional issue here. (Just updated the image. Dumb Dumb I am, I had too many ‘to’s in it! It’s fine now).

During a relatively peaceful 2002 protest against the World Bank in Washington, D.C., anti-war demonstrators began to change the situational climate of the march. Tensions between protesters and police, who were expecting a violent demonstration, began to rise. Police began to arrest everyone that they managed to surround inside Pershing Park, guilty, as well as innocent bystanders alike. In relative anticipation of the police’s reaction, this young man wrote the telephone numbers of civil defense lawyers on his arms before the demonstrations even began.

‘Atticus – ’ said Jem bleakly. ‘How could they do it, how could they?’ ‘I don’t know, but they did it. They’ve done it before and they did it tonight and they’ll do it again and when they do it – seems that only children weep. Good night.’ / “Harper Lee, To Kill A Mockingbird” Open to interpretation – I’d love to hear what you think, and see if i got across the point i was trying to.. / The reference photo was taken by frixen on DeviantART (www.frixen.deviantart.com)

Where Are The Missing protesters? / With the Beijing Olympics on the horizon, more than 1,000 people who were detained in Tibet for protesting against the Chinese government three months ago remain unaccounted for, according to a report by Amnesty. Hundreds of people languish in Chinese prisons for peacefully expressing their opinions, in appalling conditions and without their relatives even knowing where they are. “Across the Universe” Copyright 2007 Alice McMahon White, with design assistance from Teagan White, soft pastel on Kitty Wallis sanded paper, 84×36” This is the final work for my “White Album” series. I’m feeling sad already… “Across the Universe” was in the works long before I ever heard about the recent movie release. It was inspired by my trip with Teagan to DC in March 17, 2007, last St. Patrick’s Day. So, back in March, we were armed with cameras instead of protest signs, and were just trying to stay awake after all night on the bus, and also trying to stay warm in the high icy winds. But the two of us have been planning this work inspired by our experience since then. Truly a cooperative work, my girl gladly designed the protest sign, and planned her outfit, picking up activism buttons and the MAKE LOVE NOT WAR t-shirt, even painting her own jeans. And just two weeks ago, she was a stoic and excellent model for my reference photos. The daisy in her hand is a nod to a shy young woman we met in DC. She never said a word, but passed out single yellow daisies to marchers all day. The rainbow is a symbol for St. Pat’s Day, spring, peace stretching across the planet, light coming after the rain, and also for gay rights, as shown on one of the buttons on her jacket. The rainbow is reflected in the puddles at her feet, “pools of sorrow/waves of joy”. No blood for oil… My intention was to handwrite actual words from many different Beatles song lyrics in the rainbow, subtle, so you could barely see them, and yes, the puddles need work, but I simply ran out of time. Show needed to get hung. DO see the movie “Across…” my favorite in a long time, and it’s not just because I like the Beatles! Wishing for WORLD PEACE in 2008! Happy New Year dear friends! Thanks for your support this past year. I’m humbled by your great kindness to me. Hugs and much love! ~ Alice

God Save The Queen was originally called No Future. The band played it live and recorded a demo version with that title, but changed it when lead singer Johnny Rotten got the idea to mock the British monarchy. This became an anthem for the Punk movement in England. It expressed the anger young people felt toward the establishment. God save the queen / The fascist regime / They made you a moron / Potential H-bomb God save the queen / She ain’t no human being / There is no future / In England’s dreaming Don’t be told what you want / Don’t be told what you need / There’s no future, no future, / No future for you God save the queen / We mean it man / We love our queen / God saves God save the queen / ‘Cause tourists are money / And our figurehead / Is not what she seems Oh God save history / God save your mad parade / Oh Lord God have mercy / All crimes are paid When there’s no future / How can there be sin / We’re the flowers in the dustbin / We’re the poison in your human machine / We’re the future, your future God save the queen / We mean it man / We love our queen / God saves God save the queen / We mean it man / And there is no future / In England’s dreaming No future, no future, / No future for you / No future, no future, / No future for me No future, no future, / No future for you / No future, no future / For you
