It was the beautiful bud of this flower that I first captured my attention and inspired me to bring out the camera. Check out my other Cosmos images! View Pretty in Pink here View Cosmos Bud here

This viola has a happy face! It sprang up from seed several years after the original plant had died.
I love observing the detail in flower buds. The bud of the Cosmos is very interesting to view close up, although they mostly go unnoticed next to its beautiful flowers. Check out the other Cosmos images in my gallery! All make beautiful greeting cards. View Cosmos here View Pretty in Pink here

Courtesy Wikimedia / The genus Ipomoea (pronounced /ˌɪpoʊˈmiːə/, from the Greek ips ~ ipos, wormweed or bindweed, and homoeos, resembling, referring to the twining habit) is the largest in the family Convolvulaceae, with over 500 species. Most of these are called “morning glories”, but this can refer to related genera also. Those formerly separated in Calonyction (Greek καλός, kalos, good and νύκτα, nycta, night) are called “moonflowers”. The genus occurs throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the world, and comprises annual and perennial herbaceous plants, lianas, shrubs and small trees; most of the species are twining climbing plants. Human use of Ipomoea is threefold: First, most species have spectacular, colorful flowers and are often grown as ornamental plants, and a number of cultivars have been developed. Their deep flowers attract large Lepidoptera – especially Sphingidae such as the Pink-spotted Hawkmoth (Agrius cingulata) -, or even hummingbirds. Second, the genus includes food crops; the tubers of Sweet Potato and the leaves of Water Spinach are commercially important food items and have been for millennia. The Sweet Potato is one of the Polynesian “canoe plants”, transplanted by settlers on islands all over that ocean. Water Spinach is used all over eastern Asia and the warmer regions of the Americas as a key component of well-known dishes such as Canh chua rau muống (Mekong sour soup) or Callaloo; its numerous local names attest to its popularity. Other species are used on a smaller scale, e.g. the Whitestar Potato (I. lacunosa) traditionally eaten by some Native Americans like the Chiricahua Apaches, or the Australian Bush Potato (I. costata). Peonidin, an anthocyanidin potentially useful as a food additive, is present in significant quantities in the flowers of the “Heavenly Blue” cultivars. Moon Vine (I. alba) sap was used for vulcanization of the latex of Castilla elastica (Panama rubber tree, Nahuatl: olicuáhuitl) to rubber; as it happens, the rubber tree seems well-suited for the vine to twine up upon, and the two species are often found together. As early as 1600 BCE, the Olmecs started to produce the balls used in the important Mesoamerican ballgame thus. The root called John the Conqueror in hoodoo and used in lucky and/or sexual charms (though apparently not as a component of love potions) usually seems to be from I. jalapa. The testicle-like dried tubers are carried as an amulet and rubbed by the user to gain good luck in gambling or flirting. This is a small “slice” of my mother’s garden; she is a master gardener. Anything she plants thrives beautifully, and my father is just as good as she is. He saves watermelon and tomato seeds when he eats at restaurants, dries them, plants them, and harvests a good crop later on. What a wonder my parents are; truly their hearts are in the garden.

Songbirds that I have photographed in my yard are showcased in each of the twelve months of the year. Included are the painted bunting, Northern cardinal, American robin, Eastern bluebird, Carolina chickadee, ruby-throated hummingbird, goldfinch, common house finch, mockingbird, and the tufted titmouse.
This pearl crescent butterfly is very tiny and often overlooked, yet it is very beautiful. I’ve chosen to include it on this birthday greeting card because butterflies are symbolic of life as they emerge from lowly caterpillars to exquisite creatures. I’ve also included a favorite quotation of mine written by Father Henri J. M. Nouwen about the importance of celebrating birthdays. I hope this might be the perfect card for that special someone on his or her special day. Here are Father Nouwen’s words: “Birthdays need to be celebrated. I think it is more important to celebrate a birthday than a successful exam, a promotion, or a victory. Because to celebrate a birthday means to say to someone, ‘Thank you for being you.’ Celebrating a birthday is exalting life and being glad for it. On a birthday, we do not say, ‘Thank you for what you did, or said, or accomplished.’ No, we say, ‘Thank you for being born and being among us.’ “

I don’t think there is any other flower like a Rose, that can say so much with so little….and with that I will let the photo itself speak….

And the glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fat valley, shall be a fading flower, and as the hasty fruit before the summer; which when he that looketh upon it seeth, while it is yet in his hand he eateth it up ( Isaiah 28:4). A while ago a hospital asked me for their annual book to portrait the organisation. I suggested to make shoe portraits – every body can find a pair that fits – and i will show some of them here. Finally they published about 40 portraits.
