Dissection is cruel and unnecessary. With the alternative methods available today, schools can save thousands of dollars AND thousands of lives. Some things to consider are psychological impact, education, animal welfare, environment, cost, and chemical exposure. / / ALL proceeds will be donated to the Physicians Committee For Responsible Medicine. / / “To go against the dominant thinking of your friends, of most of the people you see every day, is perhaps the most difficult act of heroism you can have.” / ~ Theodore H. The Sumatran Orangutan (Pongo abelii) is the rarer of the two species of orangutans. Living and endemic to Sumatra island of Indonesia, they are smaller than the Bornean Orangutan. The Sumatran Orangutan grows to about 4.6 feet tall and 200 pounds in males. Females are smaller, averaging 3 feet and 100 pounds. Compared to the Bornean Orangutan, the Sumatran Orangutans possess a lighter and longer pelage, a longer face, a smaller stature, and flanges that are covered in small white hairs. Wild Sumatran Orangutans in the Suaq Balimbing swamp have been observed using tools. An orangutan will break off a tree branch that’s about a foot long, snap off the twigs and fray one end. It then will use the stick to dig in tree holes for termites. They’ll also use the stick to poke a bees nest wall, move it around and catch the honey. In addition, orangutans use tools to eat fruit. When the fruit of the Neesia tree ripens, its hard, ridged husk softens until it falls open. Inside are seeds that the orangutans love, but they are surrounded by fiberglass-like hairs that are painful if eaten. A Neesia-eating orangutan will select a five-inch stick, strip off its bark, and then carefully collect the hairs with it. Once the fruit is safe, the ape will eat the seeds using the stick or its fingers. Although similar swamps can be found in Borneo, wild Bornean Orangutans have not been seen using these types of tools. Don’t miss out on these other animal images: ! - - - /

Juvenile Elephant Seals test each other strength by biting and pushing each other. In most cases it is a form of play which prepares them for real life when they will claim their own females. 50% of all proceeds from the sale of this image will be donated to the Marine Conservation Organization Consider my other images of Elephant Seals / /

I love the look I’m getting from this great horned owl. There’s nothing quite like getting glared at by an annoyed raptor! This image was taken in Homoassa Springs State Park, Homosassa Springs, Florida. 100% of the profits from the sale of this image will be donated to the American Bird Conservancy.

A juvenile male Elephant Seal is looking backwards at the photographer (me) Image was taken at San Semion California. This young male was a part of a group that had at least 500 Elephant Seals. The pacific coast is home for this wonderful mammals and San Semion has several locations where they are protected. This was taken away from the tourist location, and on a streach of the beach where no people can go. distance was about 5 feet away from the animal. 50% of all proceeds from the sale of this image will be donated to the Marine Conservation Organization Consider my other images of Elephant Seals /

Whenever I see a Mountain Lion now it reminds me of when I was being watched from the bushes while I was taking a pciture of a river near Silverton, Colorado while on my way to a ghost town by the name of Annimas Forks in 1996. / / I took a picture of the river, but wanted, movement in the water and needed my tripod, I went back to my vehicle to get it. When I turned to go back out and was about 15 feet from my vehicle I heard my wife Gen holler “Tim, don’t go out there, there is a cat watching you from the bushes”. / / My wife had been reading a book when our dog made a very quick move in the vehicle getting my wife’s attention, when she looked she just happen to see the mountain lion wtaching me from the bushes. / / The cat was there all the time when I was taking the first photo. He could have taken me down when I turned my back and left to get my tripod. / / After my wife told me there was a cat watching me I decided it might be best to leave the water movement photo go. I figured I might not be so lucky if I went out there again and invaded his area a second time. / / Who knows what could have happened when I turned my back to him the second time, that could have been it, I could have never got to my vehicle in time being about 50 yards from it. / / Better to look a Mountain Lion in the eye from this photo. / / (Viewing larger suggested) Hope you enjoyed the photo and the story, I will never forget the experience. /
