During this heat wave I’ve heard that birds & animals are getting very distressed & dying…ie – possums who can’t cope with the intense heat, just falling out of trees. Yesterday, on my way home from work I saw a pigeon sitting on a car roof…it looked very distressed & I’m guessing didn’t survive. Due to our water restrictions people aren’t filling up their bird baths, and many households & work places don’t have any water outside & the birds & animals are struggling to find water to cool themselves down & hydrate in this heat. So, to help the birds & animals that share our baking planet, I thought I’d suggest that people place an icecream container of water outside during this heatwave, to help them make it through, and depending on your workplace, it might be an idea to take one to work too : )

  • When I saw the dog approach I wondered what his reaction would be, bark at us or be cautious in his approach but he ended up being quite playful walking beside us for a little while until another dog came and they amused themselves rolling around in the sand… Taking photos of domesticated animals is not on my priority list but this particular one I’m very satisfied with for it’s look and color tone I managed to achieve. • I was pleased to capture this man walking towards the docks with his bag and the houses of Kassies Bay in the background. How does your day start? Do you drive to work – is it long distance or do you walk like him? Fleeting moment in time but I hope you take the time to look long enough at the photo and start asking questions yourself as I often do. So many people on this planet, so many dreams, so many ambitions…what road will you take through life? • The elements may huff and they may puff but they won’t blow the house down…The clouds at the coast are spectacular in summer, I’m yet to see it in winter during the rainy season and I’m already thinking of devious plans to get back down there when the weather is at its worst for a few days… This was taken near Dana baai – South Africa Flickr Gallery http://www.flickr.com/photos/soulmyst/ P.S If you prefer to view this on imageKind do a search “soulmyst”

  • Which person are you? The one which stares and admires the ocean from a distance or the one that wishes you could be on or in it as much as you possibly can…(I watched Jaws 3 as a kid so it is not hard to guess my choice)...Lovely rocky beaches near Knysna to spend the day taking nothing but photographs; only regret being that I could not take photos on different days with different weather conditions… Garden Route, Western Cape Province – South Africa Flickr Gallery http://www.flickr.com/photos/soulmyst/ P.S If you prefer to view this on imageKind do a search “soulmyst”

  • Hoku’ala ‘o Pa’ako / Ascending Star / Pa’ako Beach Makena Maui Hawai’i This beautiful child was swimming and playing in the ocean with her mother and two sisters, one of which is an identical twin sister. She is one of the most beautiful children I have ever seen. She is like a princess with the face of an angel. I cloned and replaced the background and applied a Gaussian Blur, then a selective DOF application to soften the background more. Hawaiian Translation ~ Literally “child of the land, or born in the land”. Host, native, acquainted, familiar. / This is an important concept in Hawaiian culture. / If a Kanaka (a Hawaiian) calls you a “kama’aina ” , they have just paid you a very nice compliment. / You don’t have to be born here to be one … it’s an attitude. Some people who think they are, aren’t, and lots of people who think they are not, are. Kai Makani Ho’ohinuhinu Copyright © Sharon Mau 2009 / My images do not belong to the public domain. • Also check out Water Horse II Mixed Media on heavy textured ivory Strathmore paper. 12.5×19 inches. Oil pastels, liquid copper leaf, gold paint pen, colored pencils, markers. According to legends, a Water Horse (known as a Kelpie) is a supernatural creature that lures humans to death by drowning. —-—-—— / From Wikipedia The kelpie is a supernatural water horse from Celtic folklore that is believed to haunt the rivers and lochs of Scotland and Ireland. Its hide was supposed to be black (though in some stories it was white), and will appear to be a lost pony, but can be identified by its constantly dripping mane. Its skin is like that of a seal, smooth, but is as cold as death when touched. The horse’s appearance is strong, powerful, and breathtaking. Water horses are also known to transform into handsome men in order to lure women into their traps. It is understood that the nostril of the horse is what creates the illusion of grandeur. The water horse also creates illusions to keep itself hidden, keeping only its eye above water to scout the surface, much like the illusion of a fish’s pupil. It is wise to keep away from them. If a human climbs on the back of a water horse, the horse will often dive into the water and drown its rider. If a human gains control over the horse it can be put to work in fields. Water Horses have the strength of ten land horses and do not like to be enslaved and will try every trick to escape. The water horse then courts its master for several years before it consumes only the left leg and right hand pinky finger of the victim. The water horse is also a common form of the kelpie, said to lure mortals, especially children, into the water to drown and eat them. It performs this act by encouraging children to ride on its back. Once its victims fall into its trap, the kelpie’s skin becomes adhesive and it bears them into the river, dragging them to the bottom of the water and devouring them – except the heart or liver. A common Scottish tale is the story of nine children lured onto a kelpie’s back, while a tenth keeps his distance. The kelpie chases him and tries to catch him, but he escapes. A variation on this is that the tenth child simply strokes the kelpie’s nose, but when his finger becomes stuck to it he takes a knife from his pocket and cuts his own finger off. He saves himself, but is unable to help his friends as they are pulled underwater with the kelpie. Commonly known as spirits of the dead, kelpies are not benevolent creatures. An exception is a Scottish tale in which, towards the end of the mystical period of Scotland, a water horse fails to travel to Tír na nÓg with its fellow mystic folk, and instead rises above water, seeking a wife. However, after attempting to court a clever girl, who consults the wiseman about the situation, he is captured and forced to work in order to be taught compassion. After learning his lesson, he is given the choice of departing to Tír na nÓg, or drinking a magic potion that will make him a real man. The water horse, now full of love decides to drink the potion which erases the memories of his life as a water horse and gives him the chance to live with the clever girl with whom he has fallen in love. —-—-—— View more of my artwork online at http://www.lynnetteshelley.com

  • One of the most beautiful and striking of ducks, the Mandarin drake in this artwork sets sail under midnight skies for adventures unknown…. I took some liberties with the male mandarin’s coloring. The Mandarin duck represents fidelity in Asian art. According to Wikipedia: The species was once widespread in eastern Asia, but large-scale exports and the destruction of its forest habitat have reduced populations in eastern Russia and in China to below 1,000 pairs in each country; Japan, however, is thought to still hold some 5,000 pairs. Original measures 12.5×19 inches approximately, and was created with oil pastels, liquid silver leaf, gold acrylic pen, silver sharpie pen, and colored pencils on Canson pastel paper.
