Captured in the ghost town of Como, Colorado…..this Horse and many others like him, have had a really hard winter. The town was cut off from supplies for over 6 weeks, and when I was up that way I wanted to make sure the Horses were ok…and to my pleasure they were. / They are working horses, an icon of the American West, ridden by Cowboys and worked everyday. A disappearing icon at that, but one that will forever remain and legend and go down in history. See more on my website at jdebordphoto.com —-John

SO, YOU’VE BEEN SITTING THERE IN THE COLD FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS WITH YOUR CAMERA SET ON THE TRIPOD, JUST ABSORBING THE SIGHTS, SOUNDS AND EVEN THE SMELL, TASTE, AND FEEL OF THE AIR, ALMOST SPELLBOUND BY EVERYTHING THAT IS THE WOODS IN WINTER. / YOU START FEELING THE CHILL, SO YOU TAKE OUT YOUR THERMOS AND POUR YOURSELF A CUP OF COFFEE. YOU DRINK IT SLOWLY, FEELING THE WARMTH COURSING THROUGH YOUR WHOLE BODY, AND YOU THINK, ” HOW COULD IT POSSIBLY GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS ? “ / THEN THIS GUY COMES ALONG AND JUST STANDS THERE POSING FOR YOU. My son’s friend, who lives on a farm at a 5-minute drive from our place, allowed us to make some shots on his family’s property. We decided to go this week and just before leaving the place, I saw my sister photographing the broken window of a door to an enclosed stairway leading down to the cellar. Smiling to myself, I stepped closer, and saw that in fact, she was taking a picture of a barn cat sheltering from the cold on a shelf over the stairs! What a nice find! I could not miss the occasion and made a few shots myself. This necessitated quite a bit of post-processing because there was a bright snow reflection on the window, but the interior was quite dark. I have an old version of Photoshop and I don’t have any HDR software, so making bracketed shots was useless. So I did the next best thing, and applied a fake polarizing filter in Photoshop and played with saturation, curves and levels until I was satisfied. The other problem was finding an angle where the camera and tripod would remain out of the reflection, while still getting a good view of the cat. Native to the Central Asian mountains, the beautiful SNOW LEOPARD is a rare sight, with only about 6,000 left in the wild. / These beautiful grey leopards live in the mountains of Central Asia. They are insulated by thick hair, and their wide, fur-covered feet act as natural snowshoes. These cats have powerful legs and are tremendous leapers, able to jump as far as 50 feet (15 meters). / They are hunted for their beautiful, warm fur and for their organs, which are used in traditional Chinese medicine :( / THE SNOW LEOPARD…..♥
