WILD AND FREE / / We were very lucky with our bear sightings around Spitzbergen in the Scandinavian Arctic, which allowed us to get some nice close-up shots. This was the best day of our Artic trip, we were so lucky to spend hours with this polar bear mum and cubs (there were actually two cubs but the other is out of shot). WILD AND FREE / / As I said on my “Polar Love” image, this was the best day of our Arctic trip. We were so lucky to spend hours with this mum and cubs as they moved around the ice flows. These cubs were around seven months old and full of joy – although they did not seem all that keen to follow mum this time! / / The sea ice is shrinking at an alarming rate, which has a huge impact for the bears as this is their main hunting ground. More and more bears are being found to have drowned while trying to find the ice, even though they can swim up to sixty miles or so! / / I hope the ice does not completely vanish and that they always have somewhere to hut! As I climbed the hill the barn to my right caught my attention. After snapping some images of the barn, the resident came out to greet me. What a sweetheart!!!!! Image taken with the Nikon D40x and the 18-200mm vr Nikon/Nikkor lens. Shutter speed 1/640, aperture f/5.6, exp minus .33, iso 400. This image is a 20-80% blend of the original photo … with some distractions cloned away … and an hdr of the same image … created from the original, hand held, and two duplicates at +/- 2.5 eval.

The Gentoo Penguin is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red list of Threatened Species Melting sea ice and overfishing have triggered a dangerously rapid decline in penguin populations on the Antarctic peninsula – a direct result of global warming, warns a new report from the WWF. Temperatures on the frozen continent are rising five times faster than the global average due to the unprecedented rate of climate change, pushing four species perilously close to extinction. Warmer temperatures are forcing penguins to raise their young on increasingly thinner and more precarious ice floes, while stronger winds mean many eggs and chicks are being blown away from their parents before they are able to survive on their own. The gentoo, chinstrap and adélie – along with the emperor, the largest penguin species in the world – are now struggling to survive as melting sea ice destroys nesting sites and reduces vital food sources, such as krill.

Another wintry experiment with one of Sienna’s pictures (original photo shown below). She was standing in the snow along Clarks Creek, but I converted the picture to black and white, added falling snowflakes and a red holiday bow to make her look a bit more festive! / Original taken February 2008. It was fairly easy to make the snow. I just searched on the internet for a Photoshop tutorial to make snow and found it instantly. Here’s Sienna’s original picture: /
