This is from a series I produced a few years ago in my homemade, primitive yet functional darkroom. Sadly, my enlarger now lives in the bottom of a cupboard :(

STALKING TIGER Slowly through the grass / The tiger stalked his prey / His movement long and languid / In the middle of the day / The sun was high and bright / As a vivid burning orb / His body moving slowly / Less heat there to absorb / Gazelles were moving fitfully / Around the waterhole / Nervous eyes were flitting wildly / As the world they did behold / A movement in the distance / And the animals did jump / The nerve ends all a jangling / Each one with quivering rump / Then like avenging angels / The tiger now does pounce / Gazelles are scattering wildly / With a death like spinning dance / And one of them is slower / No longer held at bay / The tiger now triumphant / As it finishes its prey Phil Sanders (aka Brummieboy) / 5/4/07 Thanks for the wonderful poem Phil!

A horse standing just inside her barn looking out. I just happened to be passing by and photographed her. There was a foal laying on the ground beside her.
A penguin and his shadow. update: This lone penguin had just returned from a swim (hence the beads of water on his chest and tummy) Boulders Beach, South Africa. Cheers.

“Mathew Reed’s series of works reflects on the long history of man and his deep spiritual bond with a companion animal. He touches on various religions and cultures as he expresses a spiritual connection with the protective otherworldly silhouette of a wolf. His centre piece work, Spiritual Quest, was heavily influenced by the traditions of native tribes in North America who would embark on vision quests to discover their place in their tribe. On these quests, the child would have a dream where their spirit guardian would come to them in the form of an animal. Mathew touches on this tradition while adding his own flavour, looking inside himself, walking one way with his guardian while considering the branching path leading in another direction.” Apart of Animal Logic, a Newcastle exhibition. 10% of the sales of any of the original works went towards a donation to Blackbutt Nature Reserve to assist in their eucalyptus plantations to create a better habitat for their Koalas. July 1st – July 24th. Charcoal and gesso on canvas / Approx. 46×65cm / SOLD

This is a portrait of a house cat from one of the Mornington Peninsula Wineries (25 July, 2009) who just sits around all day! For the record, I’m a dog person and I’m allergic to cats but this cat was so well behaved and just sat so still I couldn’t help my self but photograph it! I love the study of b&w photography so here’s another one! Nikon D200 / 18-200mm lens / Processed in RAW
