We feel very strongly about animal rights and hope that someday our artistic efforts may help change some minds. Animal testing is a barbaric practice that is not only cruel, but also unnecessary and inconclusive. Some examples of testing alternatives used in the U.S. are: / / • National Cancer Institute adopted in vitro initial screen for anti-cancer compounds – immediately replacing more than a million mice per year. / / • Episkin – a reconstructed human in vitro epidermis for evaluation of corrosivity of cosmetics, pharmaceutical and chemical compounds. / / • Corrositex – a two-chambered system with collagen membrane. Color (pH) change when test chemical penetrates to indicator chamber (widely used in the U.S. and Europe for corrosivity testing). / / • Computerized chemical structure-activity relationship (SAR) and knowledge-based expert systems allow prediction of efficacy and safety/toxicity of new compounds. / / • Epiocular- a reproducible, multi-layered human cell-derived tissue for testing ocular irritancy of chemicals and other materials. / / • EpiAirway- is a three-dimensional culture of human tracheal-bronchial epithelial cells for pre-clinical studies of inhalation drugs. / / • Epiderm- is a reproducible, three-dimensional, human cell-derived skin tissue for studies of corrosives and irritants. / / • Ames test uses specific strains of common bacteria to detect genetic changes caused by test substances – mutagenesis and carcinogenesis possibilities. / / • Toxicogenomics utilizes DNA chips to identify pattern of gene changes characteristic of specific toxicity endpoints. Will ultimately replace nearly all current animal-based tests. / / Examples taken from the AAVS website. Not to be outdone by some of the beautiful animals who have had their photos posted here on RB by their pets (yes you did read that correctly), allow me to introduce the funniest bunny on the planet – Taz. Taz is my five year old, supposed-to-be-a-Lionhead, but he didn’t quite work out properly. People often ask what the heck he is, and who can blame them, but he is the smartest and most loving housebunny anyone could wish for. His fur grows rapidly and continuously so I have to give him a “hare-cut” every few weeks so he can actually see his beautiful girlfriend bunny, Savanna. Taz’s hobbies are imitating a Tribble, mugging me for all the treats he can get and caravanning. Yes indeed, when we go away with the caravan for weekends in Merrie Olde England, the bunnies come too – they have their own bun-run which we place on the grass so they can get a taste of the local bunny fare! N.B. The wild bunnies, which are commonly found on such campsites, tend to treat them with disdain! I can’t imagine why! ;o) Savanna, the girlfriend. /

/ framed print (walnut frame with off white matt) I used a lot of media in this painting….. / chalk pastels, faber castelle black markers, charcoal, aquarelle watercolour crayons wet and dry, acrylics….on Canson canvas textured paper A2 size / it has been tweaked in photoshop to add brightness and contrast, etc. It’s from a series i’ve been wanting to get a start on for over a year, so this is the first one in the “Mothers and Daughters series”....I’m not sure if i’ll do more or not yet…i hope to….just has to be when the inspiration comes though…. I worked on this til 4am this morning …. oops! I hope you like it anyway, there is a sombre mood about it I guess, but not necessarily dark or negative….tears are healing, they really are….....
This is one of the many bunnies that live near the foot of Rocky Mountains on the west side of Colorado Springs, Colorado. This one was a baby. They are not well liked here because they destroy lawns and eat flowers. This is probably a mountain cottontail.

This cute creature is a Viscacha. A bit like a big rabbit with a long tail, they live amongst the rocks in high altitude regions of Peru, Bolivia and Chile. He/She (not sure which) is a Mountain Viscacha, a member of the Rodent family. This one is a wild animal, free to do as it pleases, but he’s quite happy living amongst the rocks around the Conaf Ranger Station at the Salar de Surire National Monument in far northern Chile. / This is a very remote part of the world and very few people would pass this way, so I think the Viscacha have learned to tolerate the human intrusion. / They’re diurnal, but their diet consists of grass, not very nutritious grass, so they spend most of their time asleep. When I found him he was asleep. I had him framed in the camera, thinking that he has to move eventually. And he did. He stretched out his tiny arms and yawned and then promptly fell back to sleep. / It was all over in a second and I had just enough time for one shot. Canon 5D Mark II / An old 100-300mm Canon lens at 300mm / ISO 250 / 1/500 second at f/5.6 / Handheld / Captured in Raw / I’ve introduced some vignetting around the edges and applied a curve in Photoshop CS4 but otherwise the image is as taken.
