A surrealistic piece I did ages ago. It’s possibly the illustration I’m most proud of. I had put a lot of time and effort developing this style for myself. It borrows aspects of anime movie style illustration from movies such as – Ghost in the shell and Patlabor, aswell as every Hayao Miyazaki film. It was hand drawn. I started with the Geisha then added the other elements separately similarly to how an animator might build up a scene. Detail:

I used my Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT with EOS Lens 18 – 55mm. / BEST VIEWED LARGE. TAKEN AS IS. Elk down from the mountains to feed in the meadow. Storm clouds clearing, and the sun rays from the mountains just thought it was all so beautiful. Just an amazing sight had to stop and get this shot. I took this shot in the Northern California area, better known as the Sierra Nevada’s. Who would have thought you could see such great wildlife in the wilds of California. This photo was taken on Hwy 395 near Lone Pine, not far from Bishop. I just think this area is so beautiful and looks different in every season. Today was great with the clouds and the lighting.

Just a little guy!
We had Elk visitors this morning….there were 5 of them, all ladies, just wandering through the neighborhood in the morning sun, munching on grass, finding all the new green sprigs they could….Estes Park, Colorado. They are looking rather scruffy this time of year, as their winter coats start to be replaced by their more sleek, summer coats…. You might think I would get tired of taking pictures of them, but I never do….I hope my childlike fascination with them does not get boring to you all…..
Imaginary oil painting of Elk coming to the waters edge. The Elk are fasinated with something across this creek.
These two elk were basking in the sun, waiting for me to take their picture! /

I used my Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT 350D, with EOS Lens 18 – 55mm. / BEST VIEWED LARGE. This was taken up the Trinity Mountains, it was almost dark. There had been fires up there a year before. its why the trees look this way, I found it interesting and started to take the trees against that sky.
Yesterday we had our lunch by the lake, then walked along the shore talking to the ducks and just breathing in the beautiful fall day….as we walked back toward the car, I just happened to turn around and there, in the water, was a little herd of elk…...they were crossing the lake, bulls rounding up their ladies, young ones trailing along…..we watched them in the water and on the land for over an hour, fascinated by their beauty and entertained by their interaction…...I hope you enjoy these shots…. Lake Estes, Estes Park, Colorado.
Huge Elk in Utah.
‘Heha’ka Wa’ is ‘Snow Elk’ in Lakota. This sweet Cow Elk is in our yard at the moment digging with her hooves trying to uncover any sprigs of grass she can find….in this shot, she was listening with one ear to a another one who was coming up the street in front of our house….elk radar…. :-) Estes Park, Colorado.
This Bull Elk calmly strolled through the water at the shoreline of Lake Estes early this morning. Even though a man got ‘in his face’, moving toward him within 10 feet, he continued to walk without any signs of agitation…a wonderful reminder for me to take every step of my day in peace…. Estes Park, Colorado
On our walk at the lake this morning, we encountered 2 big Bull Elk wandering along the shoreline….this guy walked out into the lake and caused some big ripples, throwing his head around, splashing and making all kinds of noise….another amazing moment in nature that I was blessed to witness…. Lake Estes, Estes Park, Colorado
This Bull Elk was one of 2 walking along the shoreline of Lake Estes this morning…..I loved this moment when he stood perfectly still in the water, knee deep in stillness, pausing from his sparring and thrashing to just ‘be’....it was a beautiful thing….. Estes Park, Colorado
As the sun peeked over the mountain at Lake Estes this morning, two big Bull Elk were sparring on the shore, feeling their oats and having a go at cracking their antlers together, just for fun. They really seemed to be more playing than actually sparring. The sound of those antlers is incredible and the sight of them together like that at first light was a blessed beginning for my day today… Estes Park, Colorado.
This magnificent Bull Elk was hanging out by himself at Lake Estes a couple of evenings ago. He grazed for awhile & finally he lay down by the trees and closed his eyes, opening them every once in awhile to let out a bugling just to let the Elk on the other side of the lake know he was still around….. When I uploaded this photo, it looked to me as if he were in a deep state of meditation….visualizing a big harem, I suppose….. :-) Estes Park, Colorado
This morning at the Lake, I witnessed some Elk action like I have never seen before….there were 6 large Bulls and a herd of about 40 cows and babies….the Bulls were competing for the harem and they all crossed the lake over to the side I was on, chasing, bugling, and running in chaos….the two biggest Bulls did some serious sparring less than 20 feet from where I was standing….the sound of all the bugling and the crashing of antlers was unbelievable…. And…..when I uploaded these pictures to the computer, I was astonished to see in the background….in the water behind one of the Bulls…..the Bald Eagle standing on a sandbar having his breakfast! I never even noticed his presence, as I was so taken with all the Elk activity…Spirit is always present in all things, in all situations, whether or not we are aware of it…. Lake Estes, Estes Park, Colorado
This Bull Elk and his harem were hanging out at Lake Estes a couple of mornings ago….he was bugling like crazy to another Bull across the lake….it is quite an amazing sound when it is echoing off the mountains around the lake in the early morning quiet….I am so blessed to have this beautiful place to walk and experience nature up close and personal. Mr. Elk took a pause for a few minutes to walk down into the water and take a slow drink….it was 33 degrees that morning, so every breath he exhaled rose like mist above the lake…..so magical…. I realize I have been posting a lot of elk photos lately….I see them daily and am still in awe…...and I just love sharing the beauty…..
OK….I may have been wrong about the Elk Rut Season coming to an end….... :-) This evening we went for a walk at Lake Estes and before we got halfway down the trail, we saw a traffic jam (or as we call it here in Estes, an ‘Elk jam’) and a huge herd of Elk…..5 Bulls and close to 100 total…..it was chaos….the bulls running crazy, bugling and chasing the cows…babies calling to their moms and people everywhere…..they finally crossed the lake in a long line spanning almost the whole width of the lake…. The sunset was amazing…..and at one point, for just a couple of minutes, the lake turned pink…...I got this one shot of that, cropping out the people who were gathering so close to the herd…... All in all, it was another incredible evening at the Lake…. Estes Park, Colorado
/ MOUNTAIN MONARCH A majestic bull elk stands at alert in a winter meadow. Oil on canvas – 16×20 / Original is for sale
Taken May ‘09 at Alaska’s Wildlife Conservation Center a non- profit refuge for injured and orphaned wildlife. AWCC takes in injured and orphaned animals year-round and provides spacious enclosures and quality animal care. Animals that cannot be released into the wild are given a permanent home at the center.
Early Autumn and morning mist add to the quiet and softness of this scene. A young buck has come to drink and enjoy the quiet, but he has heard a sound behind him and so is on the alert for who or what may come through the mist, could be someone else looking for the same thing or it could be something more! Original image taken at Rogue Elk Park with HDR effects added with Dynamic Photo. Using Photoshop layers, the Image was then filtered thru Dreamy Photo. The Buck was added as a composite, lighting effects added using render then lighting effects.
