Background Information: / Dierenpark Emmen (also known as Noorder Dierenpark) is a large zoo located in Emmen in the northern province of Drenthe in the Netherlands. Built in 1935 and completely renewed in 1970, it is considered to be one of the finest zoos in Europe and has won various prizes. Animals live in a carefully reconstructed natural habitat according to vegetation, climate and elevation. Because of lack of space, a new, second site was opened in 1998 just outside of Emmen. The two parts of the zoo are well connected with each other and one ticket is sufficient for both parts. This beautiful doe was munching on some grass alongside a road in Kenora, Ontario today. She just moved off enough for me to get this close-up including some twigs and grass hanging from her mouth as she continued chewing, unconcerned. This was photographed in a residential area of town. I particularly like her beautiful big, clear eyes and big black trimmed ears. / Canon 50D; Sigma 150-500mm lens /

“Chipmunks are small squirrel-like rodents of the genus Tamias. They are native to North America and Asia. Tamias is Greek for “storer,” a reference to the animals’ habit of collecting and storing food for winter use. At the beginning of autumn, many species of chipmunk begin to stockpile these goods in their burrows, for winter. Other species make multiple small caches of food. These two kinds of behavior are called larder hoarding and scatter hoarding. Larder hoarders usually live in their nests until spring. Chipmunks have an omnivorous diet consisting of grain, nuts, birds’ eggs, small frogs, fungi, worms, and insects. Chipmunks construct expansive burrows which can be more than 3.5 m in length with several well-concealed entrances. The sleeping quarters are kept extremely clean as shells and feces are stored in refuse tunnels. These small mammals fulfill several important functions in forest ecosystems. Their activities harvesting and hoarding tree seeds play a crucial role in seedling establishment.
