“Dinner Time” Photography & Artwork / by Holly Kempe © Out in our boat, we spotted something floating in / the water about half way across a 2km wide river…. / it turned out to be our little friend here, the echidna. He kindly let me photograph him before we took him to the bank / where he meandered quietly back into the scrub. “Why don’t echidnas get sick?” “Because they are full of ‘antibodies”. Competition: Top Ten of the Woman Photographer group challenge – Oddly Fantastic.
“Froggy Heaven” Photography & Artwork / by Holly Kempe © One of Australia’s largest frogs (a White Lipped Tree frog) resting on a rock amongst reeds beside a golden pond, looking at his next feed of fly sitting on his nose while seemingly immune to the swarms of flies and mosquitoes buzzing around him. “Why are frogs so happy?” “They eat whatever bugs them.”

California Sea Lions, sunning on rock of a jetty [Zalophus californianus], Newport, Oregon Coast
This was taken on a pond in the Coomera area of Queensland, Australia. / This lovely creature alighted on a leaf and very obligingly posed for me. I caught this shot right before she floated away. The shot has been modified in photoshop and has already been used in a recently refurbished bedroom as wall art. / It was taken with a Nikon D50
Amazing as this may sound, but cheetah are the most proud standing creatures I have seen. They walk fluidly, and stand and sit as though we got it wrong – they are king of the land. What a graceful creature this was, surrounded by all it’s family and pride, the cat sat in a trance and I have no idea what it was looking at. Thankfully it was not me. :)
Whilst driving through a game reserve in Africa, we were just heading back to camp when a pride of lions came out of no where and strutted past the jeep and flopped themselves onto the luscious grass. The rain feel only a few hours prior and the mosquitoes were terrible. I was very blessed to have gotten this photo, along with a few other great shots. We were in a bit of a hurry to get back to camp around the fire and out of the damp surrounds and thousands of insects.
The gecko is the most exquisite outback creature to stumble across. It hides, it scurries and more importantly in the sun, it bathes and basks. I lay on the ground one sunny morning and got down and close with a gorgeous dry area gekko in the rural parts of Australia. This beautiful dainty creature saw me, ran, then – as if in a trance by the sunshine – stopped! I loved it and just kept on capturing it. What a delight it was!
I would like to introduce to you Mr. Stick… Confident, Inqusitive, Cheeky Mr. Stick.
What is this? A little creature upon my leaf? As long as you don’t bite, you can stay.
The same water hole where I watched this family of elephants bathe and bask in the sun was where they signaled their farewell. Sitting and watching them play and have fun was as memorable as watching them leave. They walked in harmony and as if ballet was their hobby. Such large colossal feet tread ever so gentle around their tiny calves. As they walked off into the horizon, one elephant, possibly the leader signaled the farewell with a trumpeted bellow. Maybe they were saying goodbye and thank you for sharing it when them. Well that is how I took it. :)
