This is a young, female Western Lowland Gorilla. She was sitting by herself in the late afternoon when she suddenly turned to look towards me and I caught her fleeting glimpse on camera. Gorillas are amazing, beautiful animals, just as individual and thoughtful as ourselves. I want my Gorilla images to show both their similarities with human beings, and their unique differences. Heart of Gold is a mixed media production on watercolour paper / and one of my most recent paintings The painting itself was inspired by a response to Sylvia, the character in Bryce Courtney’s novel who led the Children’s Crusades during medieval times. In my painting, Sylvia is on a quest, just as I am, always searching for a heart of gold. She has the key to unlocking goodness and kindness and truth hanging from her belt, and she carries a staff with a beautiful flower and wears a crown, symbolising that she is both shepherdess and a leader of her people. Her horse also wears a heart around his neck. They rely on one another for support and encouragement during difficult times.

Pearls represent the tears of the moon and remind us that life may not be easy and we all struggle. The lotus represents strength through love. The daisies are for simplicity. The bindi is for spiritual insight. The red sky at night is a sailor’s delight…for a red sky at night indicates smooth seas on the morrow! As a fisherman’s daughter, I have witnessed the strange phenomena of a red sky numerous times….always turns out to be calm on the water next day – a great indicator.. red skies are a great indicator of smooth sailing ahead

I was not going to leave the zoo without this image. The beautiful bird, I first saw the outlines of through the man planted flora, gracefully glided across the artificial pond. Its motion cut a gentle trail in the small, evening breeze caused ripples. I set an ambush at the narrow part of the pond and waited patiently. No good. The introverted animal was too edgy when passing by, and emerged in and out of the dark shadows at unpredictable intervals. This was going to be a long haul. Luckily, with the ambient light we both needed running out quickly, my desire to capture the elegant curves of this creature and its routine craving to nibble a bit before the day expired reached an uneasy, but welcomed equilibrium. I held my breath and pushed the button with my cold stiffened finger. Timeless beauty. This is not a great story, just a blurb, with a moral that outweighs its size. The ever relevant message to those who take away your freedom is to realize they will never be able to deprive you of your Dignity, your Grace.
