  • This is one of the many dingoes bred by my late brother on his farm at Chewton, Victoria. Below is a piece I wrote to be read at his funeral. My family is an odd one. My father is older than my grandparents. My brother was older than my mother. I am an only child but I have a brother. It is the stuff of Hollywood and my family story is always very entertaining to others and while it does make for interesting conversation it has its down side. / Bruce was thirty when I was born and by then had already launched himself into what ultimately became his obsession so I guess it seemed unlikely from the outset that we would ever be close. This has always been a source of sadness for me. But I have always been immensely proud of what he worked so hard to achieve and remain proud of the legacy he has left to the scientific community and the country as a whole. Now that I am in my thirties and finally getting my own shit together, so to speak, I was looking forward to forming a closer adult relationship with my brother. I was looking forward to finding out what it was really like to be somebody’s sister. However it was not to be. I tried to come to see him before Christmas last year but he put me off citing this problem and that. I laughed it off at the time, amused at how like his father he was. I thought there would still be time but he chose not to tell us he had a serious heart condition and it will be a while before I can forgive him for gypping me out of a big brother. We didn’t get to share much but I do at least have the memories of childhood visits with the dingoes, a common artistic flair for photography and above all, and the thing for which I am most grateful, a shared love and passion for all animals great and small, by which to remember him. It is now almost 5 years since he died and I still find it difficult to think about the loss. I’m not sure it will ever get easier.

  • This crafty cow threaded its long horns through the barbed wire fence, got down on its knees, and munched the grass just outside its normal reach. Aren’t we a lot like that? Going through all sorts of trouble to grab “something better” when everything we need is usually right under our feet! / P.S. In case you’re wondering, I did watch as the process reversed itself and the bovine wonder gingerly manuevered its head and massive horns back through the wires, straightened its knees, and returned to home base without a hitch.

  • My son’s friend, who lives on a farm at a 5-minute drive from our place, allowed us to make some shots on his family’s property. We decided to go this week and just before leaving the place, I saw my sister photographing the broken window of a door to an enclosed stairway leading down to the cellar. Smiling to myself, I stepped closer, and saw that in fact, she was taking a picture of a barn cat sheltering from the cold on a shelf over the stairs! What a nice find! I could not miss the occasion and made a few shots myself. This necessitated quite a bit of post-processing because there was a bright snow reflection on the window, but the interior was quite dark. I have an old version of Photoshop and I don’t have any HDR software, so making bracketed shots was useless. So I did the next best thing, and applied a fake polarizing filter in Photoshop and played with saturation, curves and levels until I was satisfied. The other problem was finding an angle where the camera and tripod would remain out of the reflection, while still getting a good view of the cat. Finished in 8th position of Top Ten in the Inside vs Outside challenge of the Mood & Ambiance – Strictly Photo group on May 5, 2009

  • My cat Kasey recently came away with me for the weekend. We stayed in an old but much loved cottage in the country. An indoor cat for all of her 16 years, here she looks out from the safety of the cottage, into the big wide world. Contemplating…. She did venture out – and followed my dog on a 500m walk before turning back (She was fully supervised of course and about was fast as a snail, haha!!) Taken with Canon 5D and 24-105mm lens @ f4, ISO 320, 1/500th sec, handheld.
