  • Snow storms in the high plateau areas of southern Idaho can turn into white-out blizzards. The direction of sound beyond the wind cannot be pinpointed. In Storm Deer, I tried to capture the feeling moments before the white-out hits, when the best strategy is to find cover and wait it out. The original painting is done in water mixable oils on12’‘x24’’ hardboard.

  • During the winter in north Idaho redpolls migrate down from Canada. These two were part of a group that spent the winter at the bird feeder in our backyard. They preferred napping on the ground in places somewhat dry and sheltered. Further north they like to sleep in snow tunnels that keep out the cold wind. The original is painted in water mixable oils on 16”x20” canvas.

  • This is Geronimo, my neighbor. Taken just behind the house last winter when we moved here from town. And WHAT a view! Although it was snowing when I took this, snow effects are added… as are Night Effects. I took this by daylight. Geronimo has since moved away but there are many other horses on the ranch. Doc, his father, has this paddock now. • Sienna and I wish you a very Happy Holiday Season!!! In August, I took this photo of Sienna watching the birds through my patio door. For this digital compilation, I replaced the “outdoor” scenery with a picture of a snowy pine tree from my yard, added snowflakes, and a slight orton effect to add a dreamy effect for the holiday season!! I really don’t have too much time on my hands…. my housework, holiday wrapping, cards, and cooking are waiting for me!!!!!

  • Another wintry experiment with one of Sienna’s pictures (original photo shown below). She was standing in the snow along Clarks Creek, but I converted the picture to black and white, added falling snowflakes and a red holiday bow to make her look a bit more festive! / Original taken February 2008. It was fairly easy to make the snow. I just searched on the internet for a Photoshop tutorial to make snow and found it instantly. Here’s Sienna’s original picture: /

  • Nikon D90 / Nikkor 70-300mm lens / f/5.6 / 1/250 second exposure time / ISO 400 Bighorn Sheep just outside of Golden, British Columbia. I walked to about 30 feet away and then got “the look” from this guy so decided I was close enough! Bighorn Sheep are named for the large, curved horns borne by the males, or rams. Females, or ewes, also have horns, but they are short with only a slight curvature. They range in color from light brown to grayish or dark, chocolate brown, with a white rump and lining on the back of all four legs. Males typically weigh 127-316 lb (58–143 kg), are 36-41 in (90–105 cm) tall at the shoulder, and 69-79 in (176–200 cm) long from the nose to the tail. Females typically are 75-188 lb (34–85 kg), 30-36 in (75–90 cm) tall and 54-67 in (138–171 cm) long.[14] Bighorns from the Rocky Mountains are relatively large, with males that occasionally exceed 500 lb (230 kg) and females that exceed 200 lb (90 kg). In contrast, Sierra Nevada Bighorn males weigh up to only 200 lb (90 kg) and females to 140 lb (60 kg). Males’ horns can weigh up to 30 lb (14 kg), as much as the rest of the bones in the male’s body.
