We were really lucky to come across these “Little Bee Eaters” whilst on safari in Samburu National Park. One of the photos I am most proud of – tender yet savage. More specifically, this image is important to me because most mainstream images of Lions show only only one side of them – the hunter, the killer. This was the best day of our Artic trip, we were so lucky to spend hours with this polar bear mum and cubs (there were actually two cubs but the other is out of shot). As I said on my “Polar Love” image, this was the best day of our Arctic trip. We were so lucky to spend hours with this mum and cubs as they moved around the ice flows. These cubs were around seven months old and full of joy – although they did not seem all that keen to follow mum this time! / / The sea ice is shrinking at an alarming rate, which has a huge impact for the bears as this is their main hunting ground. More and more bears are being found to have drowned while trying to find the ice, even though they can swim up to sixty miles or so! / / I hope the ice does not completely vanish and that they always have somewhere to hut! Found after a hurricane, this little baby squirrel spent a few days with us before going to a wildlife rehab center. He was very sweet.

This was just a lucky catch. My wife got some tulips for her birthday and I took one out as the sun was setting to try a get a nice shot. I put the vase down & as soon as I turned my back I heard the hummer behind me, I turned back around and had time to get off one shot before he realized he wasn’t interested in tulips. Wild American kestrel (Falco sparverius) in flight, stooping from left to right (Taken at Eagle Bluffs Conservation Area, 5 miles southwest of Columbia, Missouri). Perhaps the most colorful raptor in the world, the American Kestrel is the most common falcon in North America. It is found from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego, and in towns as well as wild lands. Identifying marks inlcude small size, rufous back and tail, and two dark mustache marks on face. Male has blue-gray wings and a lightly spotted chest and belly. The larger female has rufous wings barred with black, and streaking on the chest. This particular bird is a female. Their call is a loud series of “klee-klee-klee” notes when excited. As with many other raptors in North America, their population n umbers dramatically declined in the 1950’s and 1960’s, but have increased greatly in recent decades with increasing deforestation of North America. They are aslo commonly called Sparrow hawk. Although hover-hunting is conspicuous, this foraging method actually is used rather infrequently. It is used most often when suitable perches are not available, or when winds are strong enough to create updrafts favorable to hovering. In winter in many southern parts of the range, female and male American Kestrels use different habitats. The female uses the preferred more open habitat, and the male uses areas with more trees. This situation appears to be the result of the females migrating south first and establishing winter territories. The males then are forced into the less preferred areas. Nestling kestrels back up, raise their tails, and squirt feces onto the walls of the nest cavity. The feces dry on the cavity walls and stay off the nestlings. Like most of the other animals I have photographed, Cheetah’s are a vulnerable species due to habitat loss and hunting by man. Despite being the oldest of the big cats (appearing millions of years ago) they may be the first to go. I have been wanting to do a follow-up to Colors of Nature, but I wasn’t sure how I wanted to present it. Since I have already done flora, I wanted to do something with fauna, and something unique… Then it struck me how amazingly colorful snakes can be, and how that is something most wouldn’t think to notice. So, I present to you these beautiful snakes, all of whom are wild and were captured, photographed, and released in and around north and central Florida. The colors here are completely natural; I’ve not altered them at all. The snakes are: corn snake (aka red rat snake, Elaphe guttata guttata), yellow rat snake (Elaphe obsoleta quadrivittata), rough green snake (Opheodrys aestivus aestivus), and bluestripe garter snake (same one as in Feeling Blue Thamnophis sirtalis similus). I only wish I had photos of orange and purple snakes to complete the spectrum. :P / . / This is currently not for sale as a laminated print because the border won’t print well with the text on the laminated prints, since RB adds their own border. This was one of the feral kittens born to feral parents (an orange tabby and and a grey striped tabby) – Oscar (the orange) was very friendly with me. He lost his mamma as a kitten (spent his kitten-hood in our back yard with the little striped tabby). I don’t know where they ‘stayed’, but they came to my backdoor every morning for water and food (they knew I was such a sucker). The following spring there were four new little faces – this photo was just one of the kittens. I fed all 6 of them all summer, but worried about them over the coming winter that was to come. In October we live-trapped them and took them to the shelter where, happily, they all found homes – the kittens were parceled out one at a time (that made me sad) and Oscar and Mama (that’s what we called her) went together to a farm. 75% of my profit from all sales of this card will be donated to the local animal shelter.
