Dear William; Well honey its been 9 days I have been down here in the submersible, I’m studying the dolphins this month. I wish you were here to see them all interacting, its just amazing. They dont seem to be bothered with my presence anymore. / Ive been studying these beautiful creatures daily and the team wants to test their certain abilities and game behavior. We placed large cubed objects on the floor of the ocean to which they could be tested for long extended periods of time. It didnt take long until they did accept the objects, or even the lights going on when they entered them. Our little friends appeared to love this one in front of me the most and are joyously entertaining themselves daily with little games like, who can could turn through the cube the quickest. The elders are less likely to join in but remain near by. Perhaps their knowledge of such non sea elements are considered a breach of territory or considered a possible threat. / Well I better get back to work….Talk soon! / . / . / . / Journal Entry: June 12th, 2012 / Day 9…. / Quadrant 8 / Subjects: Ling’s Pod / Time: 2:34pm / Grouping: Ling’s pod has remained since dropping the cubes. No other pods have appeared. / Territorial Issues: Ling appears watchful of outside interference, even small fish / Flashing Light Reactions: Adults still unsettled, young adults intriqued / Gaming: The young adults appear most engaged while others try but end quickly, still unsure why / Emotional Stress: None at this time / Time of Cubing Interactions: Mostly between 10am & 4:40pm, seems feeding schedules counter the play activity. ©2007 Lisa C. November, years ago, near sunset at the Chilkat River, where around 3000 bald eagles congregate to feast on a late salmon run. It was a slow year when I went; there were only about 600 eagles. The sun came up at 10am and went down around 2:30, and did a little arc in the southern sky when we could see it at all. It was a great trip and I’d love to go back now that I have more skill and better gear.

The Wu Shan Fairy Series Red Cranes on river ice, original art work by Zhao, Ze. The Wu Shen Fairy Series is based on a famous Chinese legend about Wu Shan (Wu Mountain), located at the traditional eastern border of China’s Sichuan Provence on the Yangtze river. This area is popularly known today as the “Three Georges” and is the site of the world’s largest dam for flood control and power generation. As with many legends and fables a number of variations exist. Only a brief summary of the fairy story is described here. Since humans dwelled in China rivers and floods carved history into the mountains, shaped the lives of humans and affected the course of human events. Farmers need rivers to nourish their crops for bountiful yields but nature also wrecks havoc with floods. The struggle with the river that ancient Chinese faced continues in the modern era with the new Three Gorges Dam as the world’s largest construction project. The Chinese poet Lu You also wrote about this area and its fairy stories. / In this context, thousands of years ago the Queen of the West sent her beautiful young daughter Wao Ji and 11 hand maidens to watch over the Jade Pool. These 12 fairies are symbolized by the 12 peaks of the gorge. The lovely Wao Ji wandered and lived among the animals. Eventually she settled in the magnificent beauty of Wu Shan. She observed the suffering of humans caused by the river floods and took pity. Ultimately, she had a rendezvous with Prince Chu and gave him a book describing how to control the river and its floods. / There are many additional details to this epoch not retold here. You can search under “Three Gorges History”, “Wu Shan Mountain” or “Wu Shan Fairy” for the rest of the story. The paintings are the artist’s image of the beautiful fairy goddess and her surroundings.

This is the colour version of the HDR sunset shot at Mannum that has come up with an amazing dogs face in the lower left portion of the image. Shot taken between Mannum and Young Husband near the Marina. No photoshop manipulation the dogs face just appeared. As a child, my treasured stuffed animal (as all children tend to have) was a little squirrel who went on every kind of adventure with me, and my favorite story was about a lil’ squirrel named “Miss Suzy” – written by Miriam Young, and illustrated by Arnold Lobel. I love the thought of the tiny leaf-boat capturing the attention of the denizens of the pond as it passes by en route to a wonderous place. January 10th, 2009 – WOW!! After my ill-fated original Water Horse artwork was destroyed/lost by the postal service while sending it to its new home, I decided to make another Water Horse of sorts. This one is done in a bit of an Asian style, and is a mixed media creation (oil pastels, colored pencils, art markers, gold paint pen, and liquid copper leaf) on light green Canson pastel paper. The artwork measures 12.5×19 inches. A small study of the basic horse figure was also created and is named Painted Pony According to legends, a Water Horse is a supernatural creature that lures humans to death by drowning. —-—-—— / From Wikipedia The kelpie is a supernatural water horse from Celtic folklore that is believed to haunt the rivers and lochs of Scotland and Ireland. Its hide was supposed to be black (though in some stories it was white), and will appear to be a lost pony, but can be identified by its constantly dripping mane. Its skin is like that of a seal, smooth, but is as cold as death when touched. The horse’s appearance is strong, powerful, and breathtaking. Water horses are also known to transform into handsome men in order to lure women into their traps. It is understood that the nostril of the horse is what creates the illusion of grandeur. The water horse also creates illusions to keep itself hidden, keeping only its eye above water to scout the surface, much like the illusion of a fish’s pupil. It is wise to keep away from them. If a human climbs on the back of a water horse, the horse will often dive into the water and drown its rider. If a human gains control over the horse it can be put to work in fields. Water Horses have the strength of ten land horses and do not like to be enslaved and will try every trick to escape. The water horse then courts its master for several years before it consumes only the left leg and right hand pinky finger of the victim. The water horse is also a common form of the kelpie, said to lure mortals, especially children, into the water to drown and eat them. It performs this act by encouraging children to ride on its back. Once its victims fall into its trap, the kelpie’s skin becomes adhesive and it bears them into the river, dragging them to the bottom of the water and devouring them – except the heart or liver. A common Scottish tale is the story of nine children lured onto a kelpie’s back, while a tenth keeps his distance. The kelpie chases him and tries to catch him, but he escapes. A variation on this is that the tenth child simply strokes the kelpie’s nose, but when his finger becomes stuck to it he takes a knife from his pocket and cuts his own finger off. He saves himself, but is unable to help his friends as they are pulled underwater with the kelpie. Commonly known as spirits of the dead, kelpies are not benevolent creatures. An exception is a Scottish tale in which, towards the end of the mystical period of Scotland, a water horse fails to travel to Tír na nÓg with its fellow mystic folk, and instead rises above water, seeking a wife. However, after attempting to court a clever girl, who consults the wiseman about the situation, he is captured and forced to work in order to be taught compassion. After learning his lesson, he is given the choice of departing to Tír na nÓg, or drinking a magic potion that will make him a real man.
