We feel very strongly about animal rights and hope that someday our artistic efforts may help change some minds. Animal testing is a barbaric practice that is not only cruel, but also unnecessary and inconclusive. Some examples of testing alternatives used in the U.S. are: / / • National Cancer Institute adopted in vitro initial screen for anti-cancer compounds – immediately replacing more than a million mice per year. / / • Episkin – a reconstructed human in vitro epidermis for evaluation of corrosivity of cosmetics, pharmaceutical and chemical compounds. / / • Corrositex – a two-chambered system with collagen membrane. Color (pH) change when test chemical penetrates to indicator chamber (widely used in the U.S. and Europe for corrosivity testing). / / • Computerized chemical structure-activity relationship (SAR) and knowledge-based expert systems allow prediction of efficacy and safety/toxicity of new compounds. / / • Epiocular- a reproducible, multi-layered human cell-derived tissue for testing ocular irritancy of chemicals and other materials. / / • EpiAirway- is a three-dimensional culture of human tracheal-bronchial epithelial cells for pre-clinical studies of inhalation drugs. / / • Epiderm- is a reproducible, three-dimensional, human cell-derived skin tissue for studies of corrosives and irritants. / / • Ames test uses specific strains of common bacteria to detect genetic changes caused by test substances – mutagenesis and carcinogenesis possibilities. / / • Toxicogenomics utilizes DNA chips to identify pattern of gene changes characteristic of specific toxicity endpoints. Will ultimately replace nearly all current animal-based tests. / / Examples taken from the AAVS website. Dissection is cruel and unnecessary. With the alternative methods available today, schools can save thousands of dollars AND thousands of lives. Some things to consider are psychological impact, education, animal welfare, environment, cost, and chemical exposure. / / ALL proceeds will be donated to the Physicians Committee For Responsible Medicine. / / “To go against the dominant thinking of your friends, of most of the people you see every day, is perhaps the most difficult act of heroism you can have.” / ~ Theodore H. White, American political writer (1915-1986)

This motive has been on the bubble as a T-shirt for a while, and I’ve had a few requests for posters so here we are. / I don’t know why I didn’t do this from the beginning, but anyway better late than never I guess. It has been my best selling tee ever so far, and it is one of the vector pictures I am the most proud of. / The concept of this design was an idea I had bumping around in my head for a very long time before I jumped in to it and first put it to paper. / It was tossed around for a while together with thousands of ideas and idea snippets, collected throughout my life. / Ideas I take care of in notepads and on paper scraps of different origin and quality that I stuff in to boxes of different orig….a.s.f. Then one day (triggered by a vid I saw on the youtube. It was about how animals in African wild parks are exploited for cash) I had the idea with the blood and that was it…I went straight for the computer and scanned my sketches of the zebra/barcode ideas. Then I brought it all together in Adobe Illustrator for execution (My absolute favourite vector app.). I let the design sit on my computer screen for a couple of days as I did tiny little corrections now and then. / Afterwards I hid it for a few weeks, and then I published it after a few more minor enhancements…..and voila! POS /

If you prick us do we not bleed? If you tickle us do we not laugh? If you poison us do we not die? And if you wrong us, shall we not revenge? -Shakespeare Every year sealers bludgeon seals with clubs and “hakapiks” (clubs with a metal hook on the end), drag conscious seals across the ice floes with boat hooks, and toss dead and dying animals into heaps and leave their carcasses to rot because there is no market for their meat. Seals are also shot, but bludgeoning is preferred, because pelt buyers deduct money for every bullet hole in a seal’s skin. Veterinarians who studied a past hunt concluded that the hunters failed to comply with Canada’s basic animal welfare standards and that 42 percent of the seals appeared to have been skinned alive. Despite Canada’s ‘new and improved’ methods being implemented this year, sealers are still slaughtering these pups in the same way they have for previous years. It’s unconscionable. “THE STORY OF DESTINY She was separated from her Mother who had escaped into the frigid waters, during the terrifying confusion of the seal hunt. Meanwhile the Baby floated away alone, on a tiny raft of pack ice. She drifted throughout the night, desperately calling for her Mother. Morning came and found her miles from where the humans had caused such panic the day before. After many hours of lonely despair, the two loving Harp Seals found each other; finally safe from the reach of the fishermen! Reunited again, the Mother in her gratitude, named her miracle child “Destiny”. ~ Skye Ryan-Evans © ~ This beautiful image and story was created to protest the annual seal hunt and to raise awareness of the beauty and gentleness of our precious Harp Seals. Not only are they endangered by rising ocean temperatures, but they also suffer huge losses at the hands of seal hunters every year. It’s time such barbaric activities were stopped immediately. 25% of all sales benefit the great harpseals.org. Thank you for caring about endangered wildlife.
