A male (rear) and female (front) tortoise. I see this picture two ways: / one is with the female being naggy and trying to rush the male to catch up with her as they are missing the best window shopping opportunities. / Or, / They are a loving couple and the female is looking back to check up on her aging partner of almost a hundred years while they take a slow walk through their country acres. / Either way, I think the title fits :) / . / let me know what you think! / . / Winter 2007, Reid Park zoo, Tucson, AZ

This eye is on a very old elephant. He is in the Reid Park Zoo in Tucson. There were two elephants and this one was just swinging his trunk back and forth like he was playing a game with it. Little Dundee is the sole survivor from a very sad situation. His young mommy was the result of a backyard breeding….she had been in labor for a long time before her owners finally brought her in to a vet and dumped her saying that they could not afford vet bills. By that time she was so dehydrated that they had to hydrate her before they could do the c-section which she so badly needed. After that, mommy rejected the puppies and it was apparent that something was very very wrong….she tested positive for parvo and began bleeding out and there was just no saving her. So Dundee and his newborn siblings went to live with my dear friend who has much experience in fostering babies. But over the next week or so, one by one their mommy called them to be with her over on the other side of The Rainbow Bridge as the parvo attacked their newborn hearts. I think that his mommy did not want her puppies to be in the cruel/harsh world that she had known. Only Dundee was left behind. I told my friend that I think he is the gift that his mommy left behind for all the love and hard work that she had shown in trying to save them all.

Mr. House Sparrow ready for his bath House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) (Wikipedia ) Photo’s made in Planckendael zoo – Mechelen, Belgium / (yes, also the ‘ordinary’ local birds find the zoo an ideal territory, because of the availability of food! :) ) Photo made in uncomfortable squatted position, with hand held camera :roll: Endangered / House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) is on the IUCN Red List of endangered species. / Category & Criteria: Least Concern / In Flanders/Belgium where I took the photo, the species is on the red list as ‘declining’. / Main threats are the modern building styles (disappearance of nesting places under the roof-tiles), use of insecticides and agricultural developments (food crops like wheat and oats are less often cultivated, and the harvest methods have improved, so less is left for the birds…) / Efforts are being done to provide more nesting places (nest boxes) Photograph made with Pentax K10D camera. / Comments and feed-back always welcome.
