Buffalo on Antelope Island in Utah.
Four tons (3630 kgs) of playful fun…this rambunctious humpback whale calf considered our little group of snorkelers as his own personal “rubber duckies” in the shallow waters of the Dominican Republic’s Silver Bank. He played with us for hours, swimming close enough to touch us (literally!) while his mother napped below us, her reverie broken every 25” when she surfaced for a breath. This protected marine area is known as the Sanctuary For The Marine Mammals Of The Dominican Republic, including the waters of the Dominican Republic’s Silver Bank, Navidad Bank and Semana Bay. Located approximately 80 miles (approximately 123 kms) to the north of the Caribbean island nation of the Dominican Republic, the Silver Bank plays host to several thousand North Atlantic migrating humpback whales every year during the northern hemisphere’s winter months. Mother whales swim here from the cold nutrient-rich waters of the North Atlantic Ocean to bear their young as well as mate with hopeful males. Waters of the Silver Bank are relatively warm and shallow, about 60 feet deep (18 meters) on average, ideal for birthing humpback young. Additionally, the Silver Bank is a virtual underwater desert, devoid of rich schools of fish that would otherwise attract predators. This is a perfect environment in which to bring a baby whale into the world. Surface activity among competitive males hoping for a chance to mate ranges from breaching to pectoral slaps to tail lobs and slaps, all of it quite exciting. Yet the experience of being able to slip into the water with relaxed mothers, their calves and sometimes male escorts takes whale watching to new heights, inspiring emotions ranging from awe to sheer unadulterated joy. The humpback whale is classified as an endangered species. Threats to its survival include commercial whaling and boat strikes as well as entanglement in fishing gear, most commonly nets and fishing lines. Earth Watch tonight 8.30 – 9.30 Australia, turn off your lights for 1 hour :) / before photoshop colouring it was just a pencil sketch as above / / / Mother Nature a pencil drawing on paper / i’ve coloured this in photoshop this drawing came about while I was holidaying on an island off the Qld coast recently, I was there when the oil spill happened, and a cyclone threatened to disturb our lovely rest….but as it happened, we were not disturbed by either of these events, and were lucky enough to connect with dolphins each and every day, this is from my latest “Connection” series, it’s about our connection with creation and every living thing, especially the beautiful dolphins of Tangalooma.. I hand fed the dolphins and Tinkerbell, a mother dolphin gave me what i like to call 5 dolphin kisses to the hand. I also encountered the other dolphins called Echo, the 2 baby dolphins, one named Phoenix and it was a really special time for me. Dolphin facts I learned at Tangalooma: . Baby dolphins have hair and whiskers…they have a hairy growth on their fluke/tail and they have whiskers on their face, so that their mother knows when they are going to suckle…it tickles her and she can get into the right position . The pack of dolphins at Tangalooma have given many gifts of fish and / things like eels to their feeders and the staff their, which are in a glass display case with the various stories . The baby dolphins ‘play’ with puffer fish…they annoy the puffers til they PUFF and then toss them to and fro on the surface like they are ping pong balls . Dolphins chase their prey upside down . Many dolphins get entangled in fishing line and makes them unable to feed properly, as it gets around their fluke and around their mouths….they eventually die if they don’t receive intervention . The males get into packs and they fight for dominance, the stress of this shortens their lifespan, so the females actually live longer . A baby dolphin suckles for the first 18 months and does not eat anything while suckling…during that time the juvenile dolphin learns to hunt, they are not born with these skills, they are learned. . A baby dolphin suckles approximately every 10 minutes . Other dolphins in the pack protect the baby dolphins while the mother dolphin feeds, etc . Dolphins are mammals and share many similarities with humans…. / they can see well above and below the water :) . At Monkey Mia in Western Australia where they also feed wild dolphins, only the male dolphins come in to feed now, they have bullied the female dolphins so that they don’t come in to shore anymore….

FEATURED in : / ‘The Woman Photographer’, April ‘09 / ‘Ireland’, April ‘09 / ‘Happy Haven Photography’, June ‘09 / With many thanks. Returning from my first ever vist to Keem Bay on Achill Island, County Mayo, Ireland; this herd of sheep ran to greet us, seemingly expecting food. This is the shot I took on the way back down the mountain as the light was fading and below is the one I took on the way up. We saw the farmer a little further on with bags of feed in front of his tractor on his way up so they weren’t to be disappointed. Very curious and brave they approached in roaring wind and it was all I could do to keep my camera arm still as it blew. Canon EOS 400D 18-55mm lens Canon EOS 400D 18-55mm lens.
