What drew me to this shot (apart from the stunning beauty of the jaguar) was that here she was, trying to hide behind trees and leaves, yet she was literally just glowing in the sunlight… As if she couldn’t hide her beauty and strength no matter how hard she tried… I’m sure you know people in your life like this, or maybe even you yourself are like this… They hide behind screen names or job roles or maybe just shyness, but their personality, their inner glow, isn’t able to be hidden and just shines on… The jaguar is classified as a near-threatened species, which means that they could be threatened with extinction in the near future. Their main threats are deforestation, poaching, and conflicts with ranchers who kill them. However, things have gotten a little better for the jaguar; during the 1960s, their numbers saw serious declines due to the pelt trade, with around 15,000 jaguar skins being shipped out of South America each year. But the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species in 1973 decreased that number sharply, which just goes to show that positive legislation and treaties really can make a difference in helping species survive. 100% of the profits from the sale of this image will be donated to Wildlife Warriors Worldwide.

This is one of about 240 amur leopards left on the planet. Only 40 or so remain in the wild; the remainder are in zoos which are attempting breeding programs to save this creature from extinction. Mountain lion. In speaking of the many names of cougar, one folktale tells the story of Native Americans who would bring pelts to trade in what is now New York City. When the Europeans and white settlers would question why all only skins of females (given the lack of manes) were brought for trade, the Native Americans explained that the males lived far away in the mountains, playing a joke of sorts on the naïve newcomers—this is why cougars, who are not specific to mountain regions at all, came to be known as “mountain lions”. The etymological history of the word cougar comes from French naturalist-explorer Count Georges-Louis Leclerc Buffon, who called Puma concolor “cuougar”. This usage was derived from the Brazilian Portugese word cuguacuarana, which in turn came from the Tupi Indian word susuarana, which means “false deer”. We find that this word aptly captures the international allure and cross-cultural nature of the species, while distinguishing our organization from a popular brand of athletic shoes—Puma. Erie as in Erie Canal, Erie Street and Erie Boulevard were named after Lake Erie which in turn was named after the Indian people who lived along the lake’s southern shore, an area where cougars were abundant. The cougars there were called Erielhonan, meaning “long tail” and the Native Americans living there were called Erie or Cat Nation. In 1600, some 14,000 Eries lived in villages between what is now Buffalo, NY and Sandusky, Ohio. In 1656, the Erie were almost exterminated by the Iroquois League. The surviving captives were either adopted or enslaved. Because of this quality, cougar can appear without being noticed and quietly take control of a situation. Sometimes this can lead to conflict with others over territory. It is often noted as an animal that is independent, shy and withdrawn. The same characteristics are often found in people with this medicine. Cougar is associated with leadership and teaches decisiveness in the use of personal power. When it attacks it does not hesitate. When threatened it goes for the most vulnerable place. Cougar is not often allowed to show vulnerability. True leadership through gentle assertiveness is what cougar teaches those with this totem. Cougar people are often very sure of themselves, not taking any unnecessary steps or exerting any extra energy beyond what is required of them to achieve their goal. Most cougars learn by trial and error, which strengthens them and hones their skills. In life, cougar people may find that others will not like these assertions. Cougar people mustn’t allow others to keep them stationary—cougar people stretch their muscles and show their capabilities. Those with the cougar medicine are often attacked by others, especially by those who have grown comfortable with the status quo and do not wish to see those who have this totem grow. Even still, they may never admit when a cougar person does grow. A cougar will leap at opportunities. The jaguar is a near threatened species and its numbers are declining. Threats include habitat loss and fragmentation. While international trade in jaguars or their parts is prohibited, the cat is still regularly killed by humans, particularly in conflicts with ranchers and farmers in South America. My first experience with a roadrunner was my exposure to “Roadrunner” Cartoons where Wiley Coyotte was always after “Roadrunner.” But Roadrunner always “outfoxed” the coyote. Roadrunners are a natural part of the Wildlife in several States, California being one of them. This little guy was a frequent visitor in our back yard in California. He would come up to the patio door and peek into our den to see what was going on inside. Every time he appeared I would recall the song from the cartoon “Roadrunner” ...for those of you who never saw it…it went, “Roadrunner, the coyote’s after you. Roadrunner, if he catches you, you’re through.” Then that song would rumble through my head for a couple of hours. LOL We have now moved to Arizona and we will miss his visits every morning. The Greater Roadrunner (Geococcyx californianus) is a long-legged bird in the cuckoo family, Cuculidae. It is one of the two roadrunner species in the genus Geococcyx, the other Lesser Roadrunner. This roadrunner is also known as the Chaparral Cock. The roadrunner is about 56 centimetres (22 in) long and weighs about 300 grams (10.5 oz), and is the largest North American cuckoo. The adult has a bushy crest and long thick dark bill. It has a long dark tail, a dark head and back, and is pale on the front of the neck and on the belly. Roadrunners have four toes on each foot; two face forward, and two face backward. Roadrunners are omnivores and are opportunistic. Their diet normally consist of insects (such as grasshoppers, crickets, catepillars, and beetles), small reptiles (such as lizards and snakes, including rattlesnakes), rodents and small mammals, tarantulas, scorpions, centipedes, spiders, small birds, eggs, nestlings, and fruits and seeds like prickly pear cactus and sumac. The lesser roadrunner eats mainly insects. Roadrunners forage on the ground usually running after prey under cover, they may leap to catch insects, and commonly batter certain prey, like snakes, against the ground. Geococcyx sp. is the only real predator of the tarantula hawk wasps. The breeding habitat is desert and shrubby country in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It can be seen in the US states of California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Oklahoma, Kansas,and rarely in Arkansas, Missouri, and Louisiana.
