There are 13 recognized Appaloosa color patterns. This one is a Leopard Appaloosa. The Nez Perce Indians had a herd of over 5,000 appaloosas when they were finally captured. They had two types of appaloosa horses. One was a smaller, lighter, faster horse that was suitable for use in battle and when hunting the buffalo. The other was a larger, heavier horse that had unusually large feet compared to the size of its body. These were used mainly for pack animals and general riding horses for women and children. The appaloosa was one of the advantages the Nez Perce had on their famous flight. At one point they escaped up a narrow mountain trail that was so steep, the soldiers thought even a mountain goat wouldn’t be able to transverse it. When the Nez Perce were finally captured, they had a herd of over 5,000 horses. The US Army slaughtered all but about 500 of them, in the hopes it would prevent the Nez Perce from escaping from their reservations. All the light, fast horses were killed. Some of the draft type appaloosas were spared, and those with a wide forehead and roman nose. This was thought to be a sign of a stubborn horse that was untrainable. It wasn’t until the mid 1960s that the Nez Perce were able to rebuild their appaloosa horse herds to appreciable numbers.

This is the “Horn and Hoof flag” as described in the novel. It takes a strikingly similar shape to the sickle and hammer flag for communism.
