  • On a crisp and sparkling clear February day, I set off with a friend to explore northern Nevada’s vast volcanic desert. In this region of black lava rock and steaming hot springs, this harsh country appears primeval. It is easy to envision dinosaurs roaming here. We found this little band of wild donkeys basking on a sun-warmed rocky outcrop. They were wary of us, but seemed unwilling to move from their warm spot on the hillside, and we were able to get a few shots without disturbing them too much. If you love wild horses (and donkeys), and would like to support their continued existence in North America: Please support the ROAM Act (HR1018) / / Featured on Image-Writing / (2009.APR.05) “Early explorers brought both horses and burros to the New World. Some of these animals were released or escaped to the deserts of the southwestern United States and Mexico. With the discovery of more gold and silver in the 1800’s, miners brought more burros with them. These animals added to the small early populations and began to breed and increase in numbers. At one time more than 10,000 wild burros were found in California, Arizona, and Nevada. Today there are about 7,000 burros in this region. “Burros have only two natural predators. The mountain lion preys on all burros. The coyote usually preys on the young, very old, crippled or sick animals as nature’s way of maintaining a healthy population. “The Wild and Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act passed in 1971, stated that the Bureau of Land Management should manage wild burros with other plants and animals in the environment. • She was hard to look at; this emaciated foal with wounds covering most of her lanky body. In some places, the bones of her legs were clearly visible where pieces of her flesh have been torn away…... Abandoned by her herd – probably because of the severity of her injuries – little Spring (as we have decided to call her) was rescued late yesterday afternoon. • Here is a little Chestnut overo miniature horse yearling stallion, isnt he a doll? I was very drawn to him and he was flirting with the camera, to the point that mostly he was too close for my long zoom to focus in on, but I did get this one! This yearling is part of a stallion herd located in Southern Oregon on a Miniature horse farm. Thanks to the hosts of The Pony Club for featuring this image! / / The Miniature Horse description: / A small, sound, well-balanced horse, possessing the correct conformation characteristics required of most breeds, Refinement and femininity in the mare. • Friendship is the most astonishing, inspiring phenomenon! It can sprout from anywhere, often between the most improbable candidates, and it unites beings from any world. Friendship knows absolutely no boundaries! After discussing it with a RB friend, I decided to try another version of this composite, using a different background (a photo of St-Lawrence river in my hometown). The background in the first version made the image look a bit too stiff and artificial, with shadows all in the wrong places. What’s more, I had used the low resolution JPEG of the horse and dog in the first version, whereas I worked with the RAW file in the the second one. Thank you George for your great advice and continuous support!
