I grew up in the Dakota’s in the USA and was quite used to snow…sand was not so usual here. The first time I saw snow and sand together in Norway, I was amazed! I had always thought that when there was sand, there was warmth! WRONG!
We have snow – woo hoo!!!
In July 2007 I did my first ever snow shoe walk from Falls Creek out past Pretty Valley to Tawonga Huts and the Niggerheads then over Mt Fainter and down to Bogong Village. The downhills aren’t as fun as my crossies but the uphill and flats are a dream much easier manoeuvrability for photography too. Great trip had some good weather (the following day was a whiteout). Love the way f22 on my fisheye lens creates this sunburst effect, doesn’t work very well with a dark foreground but with this highly reflective snow it’s a winner. Just after I completed this trip I got a phone call from someone who had heard about an exhibition I did earlier in the year and who had specifically wanted a picture of the Victorian Alps, they ended up buying a 12”x30” framed print of this one. This design inspired by Japanese kimono designs and wood block prints. I originally designed it for dark colors, but it actually looks kind of cool on some of the lighter ones – aqua, lt blues and pinks. Related Items From Our Other Shops: / (Click on Image to View and Buy)
GOOD FRIDAY MAMMATUS / Photo best viewed large. / / / / / / FEATURED WORKS / “GOOD FRIDAY MAMMATUS” was FEATURED in the group #1 ARTISTS OF RED BUBBLE / / / I took this photo of Mammatus on a Good Friday before Easter in Ashland, Kentucky. The clouds first started rolling in and looked like fluffy white marshmallows. Then in front of the setting sun they dramatically began to change colors. They went from snow white to shades of silvers, pinks, grays, blues and even purples! The colors were quite striking and dramatic; these clouds were nothing like anything I had ever seen before! For a few minutes they turned very dark, and it was a sight I will never forget!! These amazing mammatus clouds lasted about 45 minutes before they exited my area. / / / We were under our second tornado watch of the year, and I found out later that I was standing right under the anvil of a severe thunderhead and that a tornado could have formed at any moment! Luckily for me it didn’t, and I was able to capture some phenomenal, amazing clouds. I can’t quite put it into words other than to say, “I closed my eyes for a few seconds and felt like I had been kissed on my cheek by an angel.” This was one time in my life that I will always remember!!! / / / This photograph of “GOOD FRIDAY MAMMATUS” has won National awards, been published in an Anthology, and has been shown on National television. This image is also featured in several websites and blogs throughout the USA and Australia for educational purposes. / / /

It was snowing heavily in late evening upon our arrival in St Johann, Austria. This lovely lone tree was full of snow and went straight into my must photograph journal, I decided to wait till morning to get the best light. The only thing that stopped my planned photograph, the morning rain. Although this shot was not what I was intending I am happy with the result as the mist did help in isolating the tree. Greeting Cards / Framed Print / Canon 5D, 24-70mm at 70mm, f/11, 1/400 sec, ISO 200. No filters used. A massive amount of dust and hair removed in photoshop, where had my camera been and OMG, how do I stop the sensor getting that dirty? The first snow of the season, going outside with my camera i was fascinated from this young woman who was walking alone in this solitary country road.My attention was captured by her little red umbrella as if she wanted put a little bit of color to the melancholic atmosphere of that grey day.
Due to the amazing amount of comments I have had from Solitude I thought I’d share this shot. I couldn’t help myself, I had to walk up to the tree, hence the footprints in the virgin snow, although retracing my footprints to take the photograph was very difficult. This shot was taken in St Johann, Austria. I hope you like it. Greeting Cards / Framed Print / Canon 5D, 24-70mm at 70mm, f/11, 1/400 sec, ISO 200. No filters used. I’m so glad every now and then it snows heavily in England. Just after stuffing the car into a ditch, through expert test driving on ice, ahem, actually practicing handbrake turns, oops. While deciding how to dig the car out on the ditch in Eaton Bray, Bedfordshire, UK, I noticed these lovely trees. / It was a fair old way into the middle of the field to get the right perspective but I’m glad I did. / I hope you like it. Greeting Cards / Framed Print / Canon 5D, 24-70mm at 57mm, f/9, 1/400 sec, ISO 400. No filters used. Dust and scratches removed in PS. I’m so glad every now and then it snows heavily in England. I rushed out looking for potential spots to photograph, I took this one in Mentmore, Bedfordshire, UK. I’m not sure I should have been there as it looked like a private golf club. There were keen golfers ready and willing to play with their orange balls and stern looks, probably due to my entrance – as I didn’t get onto the grounds the traditional way – I hoped they didn’t mind too much as I scampered back to the car. Greeting Cards / Framed Print / Canon 5D, 24-70mm at 52mm, f/5.6, 1/125 sec, ISO 200. No filters used. A nice sturdy but ice covered tripod. A keen sense of fun. A slight touchup job in CS4. Flash gun mayhem in Eaton Bray Bedfordshire, UK. I have never taken pictures of snow with a flash gun before and I wasn’t sure of the effect. This is the result. A fun crimbo card for all. Greeting Cards / Framed Print / Canon 5D, 24-70mm at 62mm, f/11, 1/250 sec, ISO 100. The iconic Liathach rises above Loch Clair, on a beautiful Winter’s day. / Not a perfect reflection, but still a wonderful scene. The dead tree has stood there for as long as I remember, in just the right place for a great composition. / Liathach is one of the Torridon Hills, in the North West of Scotland. Shot on my Canon EOS 40D, tripod, polariser, f19, 1/20sec, iso 100, auto wb, single RAW file pseudo HDR in Photomatix, finished in PS CS3. MORE OF MY WORK HERE /
