When I joined Red Bubble just over a year ago now, the first person on my watchlist was a writer who called herself Bellmusker and went by an avatar of red and black swirls. As anyone who has read Bell’s work knows, after stumbling in raptures through a few lines of her prose, her word hooks were well and truly under my skin and I was completely helpless to anything but succumbing to the wordy whims of her magnificent storytelling and ink-spilling magic. I told her this story over a glass of merlot on Friday night, in my bewilderment that only a year later, she was sitting in my writing room, cackling with me over the threads and words of our lives. I think I’ve celebrated what Red Bubble has brought into my life over and again in the last couple of months. I’ve flown to Melbourne twice: once for a writer’s meet and then for a weekend writer’s retreat... and now, I’ve had the enormous pleasure of showing Bell around Canberra for a weekend, chortling in glee at her ’...and Holls, I looked at it from the air and said, is that the whole thing?’ response to her new home for the next 50 hours or so. I should point out here that I am not a native Canberran. It was a bit of a blunder and mistake initially… I came here on the coattails of a brave whim and pumpkin ride, only to most delightfully uncover all the silver coach trails Canberra has had to offer this little Cinderella. I’ve been here for the last year or so but will soon be packing up and leaving my life in the capital behind… for the most incredible adventure of my life… that Bell is also in part responsible for… but that’s an entirely separate journal post. So. Back to this Easter weekend and the warm and magical medusa leaving behind the tantalising tendrils and charms of Melbourne to immerse herself in the world that is, as we (ahem) locals call it affectionately, the Berra. If you haven’t found her glowing review on her short love affair with the home hunting ground of K-Rudd (that’s Kevin Rudd, our prime minister), you can find it here. Good Friday was a quiet affair… I made Bell my famous broccoli soup and took her trotting down the streetlight-less Canberra lanes to a tiny little gallery cafe artspace for a few glasses of merlot. Saturday was filled with feasts and words… traipsing through the “city” and the sprinkling of vintage clothes stores and bric-a-brac shops that I pretty much live for here. I have spent the last six months driving past Pink Inc with a giggle growling in my belly at how repulsed Bell would be by it… so you can imagine my squirming delight when I bargained with her on the street for a happy-snap. She tried her hardest, bless her. Saturday afternoon was also responsible for our discovery of Dutch black cherry and vanilla vodka that I think it’s safe to say, we both pretty much peed our pants over with excitement. I’m not above reporting that the bottle was opened and sniffed and sampled before we drove home… in completely classy fashion of course. However, I think all class went out the window when the Easter bunny ears came out… / And then, as anyone who knows her will understand, the unthinkable happened and I managed to get Bell in the ears. Brigit’s scowl and growl was firmly in place, in absolute and utter disgust… but it wasn’t long before I got a smile. / / Saturday night I was most excited, for we word wenches got to frock up with the help of Sharon Jones and Big Mama Thornton and head out for dinner and cocktails. I know that in the rest of the world things do generally wind down over Easter but in Canberra, tumbleweed was seriously blowing down the street – so the prospect of words, food, laughter and martinis was almost too exciting to bear (after living in remote Australia for four years, the novelty of going out for dinner and cocktails with options still hasn’t worn off). We ate at my favourite little restaurant and I created a vodka and coconut juice drink on the spot that confused even our little waitress – but bliss, it was sheer bliss. Our bellies filled with meals so good our words were silenced, we headed to the two cocktail bars in town for red-walled laughter, mouthwatering martinis called red canary and chaise lounges laced with bad 90s music for a sublime time with my Melbourne/Canberra worlds harmoniously colliding. / / / / Of course anywhere a Bell goes, so too does her little red notebook that quietly watches and pins you in ink when you least expect it… no matter the hour of the day or the local law enforcement presence. Sunday morning, fresh as daisies, armed with our notebooks, words and a heightened curiosity of advertisements claiming the Portobello Road markets were being recreated at Canberra’s ‘famous’ old bus depot markets, we went foraging. We came away with books, sensational coffee, a vintage butterfly pendant that left me speechless, art nouveau coasters and inspiration for workshopping and writing on Sunday afternoon. / It was such sheer delight that in the most random moments, like buying camera batteries from Ted’s, the two of us would launch into an intense discussion about a narrative thread we’re unravelling, or an idea we’re hunting down, or a moment we were fleshing out in words. And now, as the rain pours down outside, I sit back in awe at what belonging to Red Bubble has brought to my life. I think the most poignant thing about this weekend was how powerful belonging to a creative group is for one’s self-confidence, courage, motivation and inspiration. I thank each of you who has shared your work with me and rendered my heart… and who has supported me on my little piece of Red Bubble grass here, so that my words have come into bloom. And to Bell, the growling goddess who has lured forth my strutting and straight-black cherry-vodka-swilling muse… what can I say beautiful woman? Thank you. Oh, and just two more little quotes you missed from your red notebook sweetheart, that translate to happiness for me: Holly: Ohhhh, dinner was so good. / Bell: Ohhhh, we ate so many animals. and Bell: There will be NO snorting without me.

Hello everybody. Just wanted to check in and let you know I am still around. My family and I moved from Ohio to Kentucky in July, and I have not managed to get back in the swing of things since we constantly have unexpected issues coming up, and I am still trying to get into a routine. Anyways, I wanted to share something with you. As anybody who knows me, I am inspired by photo manipulation. On a couple of stock photo sites, I also sell unedited photogrpahy. I was amazed to find that somebody purchased a photo of my little girl and created an AMAZING and CAPTIVATING piece with this photo. The thing that really touched me is that with all the photo art compostions and photo editing I do, it would have never occured to me to create something like this from this photo. If you click on this image, you can see it at the site wher she has it posted. Thanks for checking it out…

Thanks Girls and Boys for featuring photo FLOWER POWER / / Happy feelings here my work is appreciated by you guys and by many others. Have a smashing Easter time and also everyone who reads this message.. / Thanks in advance for maybe a few reactions.. / I love them. Regards from the Tulip region called Holland. / John ps / A serious note for Tulip lovers/growers.and no.. the featured flower here is NOT a Tulip! :-) First of all.. the Tulip is not Dutch by origine .. but grows ‘in the wild’ in Turkey .. / In ?? the 1600 the Dutch imported the little plant and started to cultivate them.. / Something we would expect from the Japanese and not the Dutch but ok.. Guys and Girls.. as a Student ( in the time of the Pharao’s) :-) I worked in vacations on a Tulip Garden for some extra $$$ / ( a Friends Father was a grower.. ) Read carefull.. here I tell you how to keep your Tulips at best condition* NEVER let the flower come to the end of its bloom.. Cut it as soon you see it’s going less.. Leave the plant and leaves as it is.. for about a week.. Take the tulip bulb out of the ground .. break of the leaves careful Cut the sort of fine roots under the bulb VERY short.. 2-3 mm Now carefully pull off the outer sort of ‘skin’ layer .. just the outside one Put the bulb in ? the attic or basement .. where you have twilight and a constant cool temperature / Place them on old News Papers ( any newspaper) :-) Leave them A : Just before winter starts or B just before next Springs starts / Don’t put them to deep would say 12 cm / 5 ’’ Live in an extreme cold country ? / A little deeper and put some straw layer over the bulbs or turf to protect against frost This is hiw the Growers do it.. / The bulb will grow a little each time.. / Leave it in the ground?? / It will get smaller and smaller each time.. / Thanks for your time and good luck.. Bye Folks / John
I was asked r…
I was asked recently by my good friend Rick Gustafson / to explain to him some of the thoughts, feelings and symbolism behind Geisha Girl which i did for him. He was very pleased with my explaination and felt it should be part of the writing to accompany the image. I have placed it in my journal as i don’t wish to offend anyone with the slightly sexual content. Geisha Girl. The girl is sat in a low lit room she is surrounded and bathed entirely by darkness. Black for me if you remember from The Secret Garden is a symbol of deeper darker desires and sensual passions that cannot be seen but are known only in the inner self. The fact that she is surrounded by blackness is symbolic of her inner deeper desires coming to the surface and surrounding her totally until they are all she can see before her. The cloth is also black and wrapped around her, overflowing her, surrounding her, taking over the pure white skin symbolic of purity and innocence. She is seated in a submissive position with her arms raised and crossed arms, open hands all figurative of submission and vulnerability, surrender, waiting, embracing, passion, yearning and anticipation of the deeper darker desires that are closing in. But she wants it, she eagerly desires it, anticipates it and wants to embrace it…….she is waiting for it to overwhelm her to take away the responsibility and to overpower her. How she yearns….deeply, deeply yearns, how she waits for its arrival, the long awaited long desired consummation. Her hair is not pinned up, it is free, symbolizing she is not inhibited in anyway. She lifts her hair as a further act of submission to reveal the whiteness of her skin to the viewer…..to the darkness, to the one who waits in the shadows to possess her. She is willing, ready and waiting but she must wait for him but he will only step out of the shadows when he is ready, when he decides and she must be patient. She yearns for his control, she feels safe with him. She trusts him that he will love her and treat her correctly and always with respect and she in turn will obey him. Her neck is a place where life flows through her veins she is offering to him her self and her life. It is also her erogenous zone; she is inviting him to step forward and to kiss her in this intimate place, to embrace her sexuality……to mark her as his. Her shape is feminine, full of curves and inviting, she is unclothed revealing her nakedness, her readiness – nothing hidden away which shows her genuineness and honesty. She longs to allow her deeper darker desires to overtake her and yield to his touch but she sits patiently waiting. She must wait. The ribbon. The ribbon has special meaning. It is again black – the symbol for deeper darker desires and passion. It is tied around her neck and hangs loose down her back. She desires no necklace to adorn her neck, no jewels, no material gain…no she desires something even greater, something more precious that what this world can offer. The ribbon is around her neck where it can be picked up and held by the one in the shadows and she can be lead voluntarily to the place of passion and consummation. It is her collar. It is her symbol of ownership and of being owned. She loves her collar and the one who owns her. Her collar is her visible sign of her submissiveness for her and to her owner. She can touch and feel the representation of the one who owns her anytime she feels vunerable or alone and know he is there in the shadows, he will look after her. But she must wait. The collar forms a circle and when placed around the submissive’s neck is akin to a ring, the symbol of belonging, love and devotion. In order to receive her collar the submissive must first raise her arms above her head and cross them. In Geisha Girl she is waiting…..the ribbon is a merely a symbol of her long awaited collar.

Please find the active post here Please post your comments there as this journal entry hopefully will direct a bit more traffic there. Thansk ,) I copied this from a piece already adapted from a poem by Nancy R Smith, done by Crimethinc. Gender subversion kit #69-B. www.crimethinc.com I find these words very powerful and honest so thought i’d share and invite your explorations. I’m thinking that it would be a great for RBubblers to create either a visual or written piece that reflect these words, or takes a new interpretive direction. Interpretations will allow us to move beyond the western construct or framework of gender, and also move beyond an exclusive male / female and boy / girl approach. Gender is diverse and is inclusive of intersexuality or transexuality ;) There are no prizes, no judging and no winners. Also there are no other criteria other than your interpretation and I have very few censorship bones in my body. This is for you to explore for the joy of creating. I’ll keep this post active for 2 weeks maximum. I’m sure that’s plenty. If there’s limited response I’ll make it a week ;) Once you have an image just add it here to this post. I will investigate how to add an image and let you all know. Unless someone knows that already and can share that info here. Oh and feel free to post work or words you already have. However, this might inspire new works too. I hope so… Cheers / Robert >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> For every girl who is tired of acting weak when she is strong, there is a boy tired of appearing strong when he feels vulnerable. For every boy who is burdened with the constant expectation of knowing everything, there is a girl tired of people not trusting her intellegence. As a member of RB’s Share The Love mission, this is the 3rd in a series of interviews to introduce you to another talented artist. Only on Redbubble could a small-town farm girl/photographer (me) from the U.S. meet another photographer at the opposite end of the planet in Melbourne, Australia! Cathy Cavolo was one of the first people I added to my watch list. As I browsed her gallery, I was immediately drawn to the vibrant colors of her seaside images, Little Boxes and Wild Sea (click on the images to see the larger views). Being new to the Redbubble world, I was a bit nervous as I sent a bubblemail to Cathy expressing my admiration for her work. However, she responded immediately with a gracious reply that set me at ease. She was one of my first contacts at RB and could not have set a more pleasant example of the community spirit. Her wonderful images reflect her perspective on the world. These are only a few examples but I encourage you to take a few minutes look at all of her works. My first inkling that Cathy also had a musical spirit was in her superb still life, Sax ‘n Boots …and later with Time to Sing. I recently discovered a mapcap side to Cathy. Not only a talented photographer, she is also a member of a five-piece all-girls band, The Party Girls, who play songs from the 80’s and dress up outrageously. Cathy plays the keyboards and saxophone in the band. Although I don’t know Cathy very well, I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know her creative persona through her splendid images and her zany side as I laughed my way through 50 Things… in her journal. Even though her answers were short, they were often hilarious and she carried you along in a “story“ that ended with a witty punch line at the last question. It is not to be missed! NOW IT IS TIME TO MEET CATHY CAVOLO. What drew you here to the Redbubble community? I was reading a forum on another photography website and somebody had written a remark saying how much better RedBubble was. So I came over to check it out and have never been back since. Soon after, I discovered the Melbourne & Victoria Group and started meeting real people in the real world who shared my love for F-stops, white balance, composition and all things photography. The combination of meeting these special people and the ability to connect with an ever growing community of online photographers had me hooked! How does your creativity affect other aspects of your life? It’s something I’ve had to balance with my family life. I have two little kids (2 & 3 years) who take up most of my time, but somehow I manage to squeeze photography into my daily life. It is such a joy to photograph them, so my camera usually accompanies us to the park or anywhere else we may go. I am also a musician and find it very satisfying to be able to explore both audio and visual worlds as part of my creative outlet. How many mediums do you work in? Which is your favorite, and why? Mostly photography, with some Photoshop work. I write songs as well, am a bit of a closet poet and also do some drawing when time permits…..which is not often! What subjects do you enjoy the most in your work? Ooh, that’s a hard one. I particularly love street photography and macro, but my favourite subject is people. I never tire of trying to capture expressions, emotions, character and the essence of a person through an image. Visually, I particularly enjoy symmetry, contrast, irony, tones and an image that generates a feeling. Tell us about one person or moment that has made your time on Redbubble particularly special or meaningful. The first Redbubble outing I went on was to Kilcunda near Phillip Island. Tony Middleton organised it (and I was intrigued to see if there was any family connection, as my maiden name was Middleton). Alas, it seems we’re not directly related but his enthusiasm for the protection of this beautiful area of Victorian coastline was infectious and made the day thoroughly enjoyable. I had never been photographing with other people before and was surprised and delighted to find that they were a wonderful mix of creative, inspiring, knowledgeable and interesting personalities whose passion for photography was a joy to share. What three works or people on Redbubble have moved or inspired you? A profile – Malen I often look at her work for inspiration. Her delightful European style combines many of the important ingredients in creating a beautiful portrait – clarity, softness, expression, composition and emotion. A person – Mark German It has been great to meet someone who is so knowledgeable and so generous in the giving of that knowledge. I have been in ‘soak up information’ mode since I purchased my DSLR last Christmas, and Mark is always happy to ramble on about ISOs, exposure, metering and all those other tricky things that can make the difference between taking a snapshot and a quality photo. I doubt that Mark has ever said no to someone asking for advice or some of his time. A piece – Axel by kcranmer / / I stumbled across this piece and sat in front of the screen with tears rolling down my cheeks. Not only was this story incredibly moving, her portrayal of little Axel was so beautiful and sensitively done that I was moved beyond words. What goals do you have for your work outside of Redbubble? I feel like I have just come out of the starting blocks in my photographic journey. Although I have been interested since I was a child, it is only recently that I have started producing images that I am really proud of. I hope that the journey takes me to places I can’t even imagine yet and that I am able to capture amazing things along the way. I would like to make a living from photography in time, but most of all I would like to keep learning more and share the joy with as many people as possible.

Hi all as you know I have a wonderful bond with two special female artist’s here in my city that I have painted with, exhibited with laughed with, and even cried with….On this night though we were laughing and loving being together…..felt so right and so good… Kym Nic and Anna…hugs xoxo Anna Bartlett and Nic Hohn, both have bubble sites and even though they have not been as active as I on here they are both fantastic artist’s in their own right….I had the good fortune to catch up with them both at the Grammar art show opening on Friday night, where much to their delight they both sold two pieces, which is great for opening night…. We then caught up on Saturday for a bit at the gallery Anna owns, which we used to open every Sunday leading up to Christmas, due to changes in our lives, this no longer happens, however this Sunday gone I open up for a few hours and was lucky to get payment for a painting that had been on layby for some time…So all in all it was a good weekend for the three of us on many levels….. I would love you to take a look at Anna’s site….or at least the paintings I have here, I will get to feature my darling Nic later this week…. till then love to all…P.S Anna does the best hand painted art bags ever….I will be sporting one when I come down to Sydney so keep an eye out…this girl has a big future….Move over Ken Done…AB is on her way….

It’s cold here in Wellington. Not the best weekend but a good one to catch up on some of my unfinished drawings. I suddenly feel a need to share my art, but I haven’t been very discipline. I try to quickly sketch down ideas, ideas that seem to be materializing less and less frequent lately. I wonder what’s happening… I wonder if I’ve lost it. Lately I seem to do more think than creating. Putting myself through this process of filtering through the bad ones and when I’ve decided to take some of my sketches to the canvas, I convince myself it’s probably not worth painting. This new and foreign thought process, I am beginning to think what I do at work is being brought through into my art. The tedious and rigourous design and architectural decisions have finally taken a toll on my art life. I used to know how to separate them well. In fact I used to find one challenges the other and bring out the better. One professional and discipline, the other whimsical and free… I have been asking myself why am I painting, how is my work any different from the rest, don’t we have enough beautiful artworks around already. If so, is it wrong to clutter the world with more paintings that are just ‘beautiful’? How have I truly make a difference then?..... and this goes on…and on… and then before I know it, I’ve lost the need to paint. ANYway, since I have no new paintings for now due to my little personal conflict, I thought I’d just share some of my doodles instead. Sometimes I think they bring across more of an essence than a finished piece of work. Most of them are done during boredom, waiting for bus, insomia nights, waiting for computer to load at work, between TV commercials… This one was done on an insomnia night. Pen,pencils, ink, colourpencils I think. Maybe I’m changing. Maybe the old me doesn’t fit anymore. I feel somewhat lost really.

Pete always called his dogs “his girls”. He brought Jet (the mum) home when she was just five weeks old and from the moment she arrived we all fell in love with her. / She followed “her dad” everywhere and was so obedient it was amazing. Six years later she got out and had an asignation with a rather dashing labrador, the result of this meeting being her daughter soxy. What a gorgeous pup she was. / She didn’t really need training as she copied her mum most of the time and she too followed Peter like a shadow. I’m writing this to show how strong a bond can be which I think you can see in the picture of the girls, taken after Peter passed away. I’m also writing this to say thankyou to everyone who commented on my poem and wished me well. Regards to all, Pat (aka) theoldone.
