The Anasazi Indians built cliff dwellings at what is now Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado, USA. They lived there for over 1,000 years, then mysteriously disappeared around 1300 A.D. This is inside The Balcony House.

In Canyon De Chelly Az. These are the famous cliff dwellings that Ansel Adams photographed. When I visited that area of the southwest a couple rolls of film were overexposed, particularly the ones from this area. I liked this shot anyway however and have worked on it with photo shop. The southwest in daylight is harsh and part of what one remembers about the area.
Many years ago, while hiking around Chaco Canyon in New Mexico, I found this pictoglyph. I have always thought is was an amazing image. Here’s to the Anasazi

Anasazi ruins in Cedar Mesa, Utah. Easy to see why this ruin was given its name. Hope you like it! ;)
A petroglyph is a carving or engraving in rock; especially an ancient one. My ancestors left tens of thousands such depictions of their lives on rocks throughout the Great American Southwest. This fellow I have created here displays the Zia (Sun) with its four rays – “To the Zia Indian, the sacred number is embodied in the earth, with its four directions; in the year, with its four seasons; in the day, with the sunrise, noon, evening, and night; in life, with its four divisions—childhood, youth, manhood, and old age. Everything is bound together in a circle of life and love, without beginning, without end.”

First in the series (besides cover shot), this shot was taken at an excavation site in Utah. The Anasazi is a prehistoric tribe of the southwest United States from 200-1300 AD, descendants of the nomadic, Clovis people who migrated first to the North American continent. At about 1000 BC permanent settlements and the Anasazi culture was born – 200 years before the birth of Christ, they began to cultivate corn/maize and by 1200, the cultivation of maize, squash and beans (3 sisters) became a major food source, some believed more important than hunting.
Second in the series, this shot was taken at the Fremont Indian site, in Utah. The Anasazi lived high on mesas, in settlements within caves and on ledges of narrow canyon walls, and evidence of them is scattered throughout the southwestern parts of North America, the most famous being Chaco Canyon with its use of stone masonry and adobe. They also constructed kivas, deep circular pits and large plazas, where spiritual rituals were performed.
Third in the series, this shot was taken of petroglyphs just outside of Chaco Canyon. The Anasazi were astute pottery makers, their distinctive black and white was the most prominent passed down many generations. They actively traded and formed roads (about 9 meters across and reached beyond 300km) leading out of their villages to their trade destinations, labeling roads and landmarks with symbols, like a clockwise spiral which depicted a good road and a counterclockwise spiral for a bad one. The Great North Road that stretched more than 20km pointing exactly southward, while they traded turquoise for parrot feathers, copper bells and cotton with MesoAmericans.
Twelfth and last of this series, this shot is taken at Chaco Canyon’s Fajada Butte (it was blurry, so I merged it) along with a petroglyph rock just outside the area. At the time we were there, no one was allowed near the Butte. In 1977, on Fajada Butte, Dr. Anna Sofaer discovered the Sun Dagger petroglyphs, a large circular spiral and a small spiral are pecked in a cliff behind 3 large stone slabs. At midday on the Summer solstice, the sun shines between the stone slabs and creates a dagger of light that bisects the large spiral. On midday of the Winter Solstice, two daggers bracket the large spiral. During the Spring and Fall equinoxes, a small dagger of light bisects the small spiral. The slabs also cast a shadow on the large spiral that marks the moon’s 18 point, 6 years cycle of its orbit. Wiki 10th century – 1250A.D. Hope you enjoyed this historical journey through the Anasazi culture, this is dedicated to my granddaughter, Lexi who will be questing at Chaco Canyon at the end of the month.
Just finished this historical journey through the cultural and tribal advances and achievements of a prehistoric people called the “ANASAZI” – pronounced ah-nah-Sah-zee, as my granddaughter gets ready to journey there and other parts of the Southwest.
Iterations fractal Only postwork done in PSP was cropping. This music is from the soundtrack for a documentary movie made called “How the West Was Lost”. It’s beautiful music and a beautifully sad and moving tribute to the native inhabitants of this country who were so tragically brutalized, ethnically cleansed and dispossessed. This piece honors all of them…...... Listen here and here

The main attraction of Mule Canyon is the Anasazi Indian ruins that can be seen under the cliffs on the north side of the canyon. The Mule Canyon dwellings were built and occupied by the Anasazi about 1200 A.D.

Went for our usual Sunday drive…we try and go someplace different every Sunday…and today we headed out into the Nevada desert to a little desert village that also has a pretty cool History Museum called the “Lost City Museum”. / The Federal CCC Camp workers from back in the mid 1930’s re-erected these pueblos from the Anasazi Indian Tribe. The Pueblos are original and every attention to detail was a strict order of the relocation by the “powers that be” in Washington DC. / It was a little eerie to walk around these cave like structures and realize that at one time familys’ lived and made their lives from these simple clay/mud homes. / You will see from the side line captures more examples of this ancient tribal way of life. Thanks for viewing my photography.
