And now let me take you out again towards one of the beautiful lanes around here. Again this shot was taken on the morning of 23rd December 2007, one of the best days of the past months. Taken on the northerly side of the Ridderoordse Bossen near Maartensdijk in the Netherlands. Amsterdam in December can have a special charm. There are quite some tourists around who know it, but the city is still less crowded than usual. And the haze of a frosty December day together with the late-afternoon sun-light create a very special atmosphere. I am very glad we went there yesterday, as today clouds have covered the sky and so nothing of this special atmosphere is left. Actually you know this bit of the River Amstel already from another shot, taken on an evening in June. The river was busy then, and it was peaceful now. And the light was ever so different. The building of the Carré heatre stands out as prominantly on the one picture as on the other, however. Amsterdam, 30th December 2008, 4.49 pm / Panasonic DMC-TZ3, 4,6-46 mm at 15.7 mm / F 4.7, 1/200, ISO 100 Here the other picture:
This time we look from the wooden bridge which you see on picture I across the River Amstel towards the Herengracht. This time you can see the arches of the traditional 17th-century stone bridges coming out beautifully in the late afternoon sun. This shot was taken about 45 minutes later, so the sun is much lower and just lights up the higher storeys of the houses on the right. Actually I was very lucky: Not only could I convince a gull to fly across just right in time again, but also one of the typical tour boats, so well-known to each and every tourist in Amsterdam, was just about to pass under the bridge.
