Amish farm shrouded in early morning fog on a gloomy winter day. Just love that weeping willow, it just adds to the general feel of sadness, doesn’t it?

Farmer in the productive farmlands of Pennsylvania, taken on a back road around Intercourse, PA. Its a lovely place to wander around and see how productive you can be even without the modern tools of life. The Amish people’s way of life is a wonderful reminder of a simpler time. They are a kind and loving people, with forgiveness in their hearts.
The farmlands of Pennsylvania are very productive. The Amish people forgo the use of modern equiptment, yet their farms are beautiful and bountiful. This picture was taken in the back roads of Amish Country PA (somewhere between Strasburg and Intercourse)

In my ramblings around the countryside here I am continually amazed at the things I find. A friend told me about an abandoned church building not too far from town. The other evening my wife and I decided to go in search of it. I was expecting to find an empty building, falling in, sitting back in the middle of the woods. Nope there she sat on a paved stretch of county road a just a few scant miles from town. The cemetery was well kept and the building was plainly visible on three sides. The church is complete with all the pews and a piano. The pulpit has fallen over as has the piano and half the pews are sinking into the earth from the floor rotting, due to the weather coming in through the un-repaired roof and broken window panes. I don’t know when this church was built but the oldest stones in the cemetery are from the late 1840’s. I have been told it was most probably an Amish, Mennonite or Reformed Friends (Quaker) church, as it has a partition down the center to divide the men from the women.

This image was taken on an Amish farm where I buy my eggs. It was a very cold morning and I got the sense that the dogs were quite content to remain in their cozy boxes. I worked the image in Photoshop to create a more painterly feel.

Sunday morning in rural Pennsylvania. What a sight when all of these horse drawn buggies make their way to church. The ones that get there early, benefit from the covered parking. I love the buggy wheel trails leading onto the church grounds. Taken with Nikon D200 and Sigm 18-50mm f/2.8 lens.
This Amish baby’s feet/shoes are so tiny and cute! His mother was holding his hands as he supported his weight – for quite a long time for a little guy! Taken at the ‘Mud Sale’ Auction in Lancaster County, PA, March 2009.

A young Amish couple was actually enjoying themselves in an open buggy while the snow was falling like crazy. He was driving while she held the umbrella over their heads. The wool blanket covering their legs was turning white as the snowflakes were accumulating on their laps. She was laughing heartily as they passed by at a quick trot. Behind the buggy, you may notice the roof of the “Forgotten Farmhouse”, covered in snow. This photo was just taken last night, hand-held with a Canon EOS 10D camera body using a Canon EF 35-350mm f/3.5-5.6L zoom lens set to 35mm. The shutter speed was 1/180th of a second at f/9.5. The camera’s ISO was set to 100. Your comments are always welcome! Constructive criticism is appreciated. © 2009 Gene Walls All copyright and reproduction rights are retained by the artist.
