Señor Tuco is a Toucan who I met in Peru! It was love at first sight! Part of the reason for that was because on our first meeting, in our Hotel near Nazca, he flew into my eye! :o) Despite being a bit of a gannet (pardon the comparison) and begging for food at the breakfast table, Señor Tuco, as pictured here in what I think is a Pepper Tree, is a free spirit – a free bird! The fact that he lives in the barren coastal desert instead of the lush interior jungle, makes me think he may have fallen out of the nest and hit his head as a chick! :o)

Wild deer in Yosemite National Park – USA I spent ages with a group of these deer. Walked slowly to approach, after approx 15 mins i was surrounded by them, couldn’t shoot as they were too close, one just 10cm away, so we just hung out together until the cold drove me inside. Was a beautiful experience. They have the most gorgeous eyes :)) I loved every minute in Yosemite. Rockhopper Penguin This species of penguin occurs in subantarctic waters of the western Pacific and Indian Oceans, as well as around the southern coasts of South America. The Southern Rockhopper Penguin is classified as Vulnerable species by the IUCN. Its population has declined by about one-third in the last thirty years. Their common name refers to the fact that unlike many other penguins which negotiate obstacles by sliding on their bellies or by awkward climbing using their flipper-like wings as aid, Rockhoppers will try to jump over boulders and across cracks.

Pair of Black-Necked Swans, native to South America. I first saw one of these critters on Lake Villarrica in Chile but it wasn’t a very cooperative model. The handsome boys in this photo reside at the Arundel Wildlife and Wetlands Trust, West Sussex, England.

One of my favourite animals, this is a juvenile Capybara enjoying some autumnul sunshine in style! For those of you unfamiliar with these critters, the Capybara is the largest member of the rodent family – a bit like a giant guinea pig. Adults are about the size of an average sheep and can weight up to 140lb. Capys are native to much of South America where there is water as they are semi-aquatic in habit (they have slightly webbed feet and their eyes are situated at the top of their head so they can hide almost totally submerged in water to escape their predators), Their ancestors were apparently 8 times as large – they must have been awesome! ;o)

Feature Image – AMERICA’s National Parks and WILDLIFE Habitat Group / Feature Image – America’s Natural Wonders Group / Lower Yellowstone Falls is simply a spectacular waterfall that drops 308 feet. It is located along the Yellowstone River below canyon Lodge and is easily viewed from both sides of the canyon by road and by hiking all along Uncle Tom’s Trail. I was in total awe when after trudging through the very slippery ice track I then to come face to face with this amazing vista. It really blew me away. . Male Lion The lion (Panthera leo) is a member of the family Felidae and one of four big cats in the genus Panthera. With some males exceeding 250 kg (550 lb) in weight, it is the second-largest living cat after the tiger. Wild lions currently exist in Sub-Saharan Africa and in Asia with a critically endangered remnant population in northwest India, having disappeared from North Africa, the Middle East, and Western Asia in historic times. Until the late Pleistocene (about 10,000 years ago), the lion was the most widespread large land mammal beside humans. They were found in most of Africa, much of Eurasia from western Europe to India and, in the Americas, from the Yukon to Peru. Should they survive the rigors of cubhood, lionesses in secure habitat, such as national parks, frequently reach an age of 12–14 years whereas male lions seldom live for longer than 8 years. However, there are records of lionesses living for up to 20 years in the wild. In captivity both male and female lions can live for over 20 years. They typically inhabit savanna and grassland, although they may take to bush and forest. Lions are unusually social compared to other cats. A pride of lions consists of related females and offspring and a small number of adult males. Groups of female lions typically hunt together, preying mostly on large ungulates. The lion is an apex and keystone predator, although they will resort to scavenging if the opportunity arises. While lions, in general, do not selectively hunt humans, some have been known to become man-eaters and seek human prey. The lion is a vulnerable species, having seen a possibly irreversible population decline of 30 to 50 percent over the past two decades in its African range; populations are untenable outside designated reserves and national parks. Although the cause of the decline is not well understood, habitat loss and conflicts with humans are currently the greatest causes of concern. Lions have been kept in menageries since Roman times and have been a key species sought after and exhibited in zoos the world over since the late eighteenth century. Zoos are cooperating worldwide in breeding programs for the endangered Asiatic subspecies. The male lion is highly distinctive and is easily recognized by its mane. The ground was bone dry, and the Bison ( or Buffalo if you wish !) were rather skitterish, kicking up a whole lot of dust, so I took advantage of the moment to produce a more interesting image. The colour shot looked too plain, so in Adobe Photoshop CS3 I converted to b/w, applied a little Orton, dodged and burned here and there, and my final touch was to add some ‘noise’ to enhance the dust, which also looks like mist ! Shot on a Canon EOS 40D, f9.5, 1/350 sec, ( I needed a fast shutter speed and a fairly shallow depth of field ) iso 200, 28-300mm Tamron lens set at 109mm, hand held, RAW file converted in Adobe Camera Raw / CS3 as above.
