  • Featured in “The Wild West Show” – June 2009. Rhyolite, Nevada is a ghost town just outside the boundary of Death Valley National Park. It was a town built on gold and the hopes and dreams that the precious metal inspires. Founded in 1904 and abandoned only 15 years later in 1919, it was a very short-lived community. • For most of the 20th Century, the Kekaha Sugar Mill was the centerpiece of agriculture on Kauaʻi’s west side. The sugar mill had a major influence in Kekaha’s development, including banking, employment, transportation, housing and utilities such as water and electricity. The mill employed several generations of local families. It closed in 2000 when the entire sugar industry in Hawaiʻi collapsed. The mill was purchased in 2005 by mainland investors who sold off its heavy machinery to other mills as far away as Africa.

  • Featured in “AMERICA’s National Parks and WILDLIFE Habitat” – June 2009. A very narrow slot canyon appropriately named Spooky Gulch twists and turns for several hundred meters through a dry desert landscape. Its walls tower many meters overhead while the opening in front of you seems to get smaller and smaller. Those hikers that are both brave and thin enough to fit through will find that they are able to make it to the opposite side. At its narrowest point, the little canyon is only about 30 centimeters wide! [Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument website] [Spooky Gulch info and photos] / Copyright © 2004 Brian W. • Featured in “National Parks of the World” – August 2009. Beams of light from the rising sun (behind the camera location) appear through a cleft in 3000 foot high cliffs of vermilion-colored sandstone. • Wild deer in Yosemite National Park – USA I spent ages with a group of these deer. Walked slowly to approach, after approx 15 mins i was surrounded by them, couldn’t shoot as they were too close, one just 10cm away, so we just hung out together until the cold drove me inside. Was a beautiful experience. They have the most gorgeous eyes :)) I loved every minute in Yosemite. • Featured in “AMERICA’s National Parks and WILDLIFE Habitat” – June 2009. Featured in “Utah Landscapes” – July 2009. A reflection in the pool of water at the base of Neon Canyon’s Golden Cathedral. This angle shows only a small part of the sandstone wall surrounding this large alcove in the Utah desert. The green areas are plant matter growing on the vertical rock wall. Changes to original photo include: moderately increased red and green, greatly reduced blue, slightly increased saturation and reduced brightness. Normally this is a reddish brown sandstone which can appear “golden” but probably not in quite this shade!
