The 17th Century Bridge House over Stock Ghyll (a tributary of the River Rothay) is one of the most photographed scenes in Lakeland, and is now a shop and information centre for the National Trust. Hard to believe that a family with 6 kids used to live there. Ambleside, a lovely little town, with oodles of charm, has become a major tourist resort in the Lake District of England. St Mary´s Church, Ambleside, in the beautiful English Lake District. Built between 1850 and 1854 in the Early Gothic style. The architect was Sir George Gilbert Scott. It was not as ornate as many Victorian churches, and was one of the first in the North to incorporate ideas from the Oxford Movement. Unlike many Lakeland churches, it has a spire, and is built of sandstone which was more easily worked than the local slate. These falls are at the foot of the Stock Ghyll Waterfalls near Ambleside, Lake District, UK. The main falls at the top are what attracts the tourists but they are not as photogenic as these.

A short walk from the centre of Ambleside, behind the Salutation Hotel, leads to Stock Ghyll Force, a spectacular 70 foot waterfall which may be viewed safely from a railed viewpoint. / Stock Ghyll, a tributary of the River Rothay, tumbles down through a series of waterfalls to the centre of Ambleside, passing under the famous Bridge House. / Once there were 12 watermills driven by the power of Stock Ghyll and other local becks, producing bobbins, processed fabrics, paper and ground corn.
