This is the third year of this amaryllis – has two flower heads – I kept the pot in the summer house as I thought it wouldn’t come again – such a pretty one and such a surprise. Really effective viewed larger.

This is the stigma of an ‘Amaryllis’ flower. I put the water drop onto it.

10×14 watercolor and pastel. Original available. Getting the color right wasn’t a problem BUT.. no matter what I did with those highlights – they weren’t bright enough. It just seemed that they would fade after the paint dried.. enter the pastels! It’s the only thing that saved this piece.. Complete 2008

My husband’s paternal grandmother, Tootsie, died at the age of 95. She had a sound mind and sound body and an enduring love for gardening, something she cultivated till she breathed her last. Before she died, she gave her grandchildren amaryllis bulbs and to this day, many many years after her passing on, we still have the fruits of her labors. This is one of Tootsie’s amaryllis bulbs that is about to burst into bloom, many springs after her death.

THE SUBJECT: / A brilliant Hippaestrum Hybrid (Amaryllis) basking in the warm sunlight of a nice Spring afternoon. THE LOCATION: / The front garden of my home in Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia. THE MAKING of ‘Stamens in the Sun’: / The bulbs are growing in a pot and as they began to flower I place the pot out the front on an old palm tree stump. So little of the world we really know, / a plant bending ever slow to the light, / caught up in society’s busy stir we go, / too often missing the wondrous sights. Living creatures large and even small, / breathing, growing, just for us to see, / from a blade of grass to trees ever tall, / being just what they are intended to be. Sadly, with our eyes open, we’re so blind, / we’re all possessed by the power and greed, / too often worried about what’s yours or mine, / never experiencing the beauty of a single weed. So many precious gifts nature has bestowed, / filling all the spaces of earth where we live, / each just waiting for us to discover and behold, / and all we have to do, is find a little time to give...Samuel E Stone.
