A view over Loch Alvie towards the church on crisp winters morning. It’s always wonderful when the light catches the colours and you’re there to catch them.
It was 1933 that the 1½-litre Firefly made its appearance. Powered by a 1,496cc overhead-valve four, Its maximum speed then was around 75mph, with 50mph attainable through the gears in 19 seconds, 1933-1934, 904 produced. The rolling chassis of the car on offer was produced in Coventry by the Alvis Car and Engineering Company in 1933, and like most Alvises in those days the body was crafted by local coachbuilders Cross & Ellis.

The unmistakable motive arrangements of an FV622 Alvis Stalwart amphibious load carrier. From the same era of classic English military design that brought you the Chieftain tank, and the Harrier jump jet. Unfortunately this specimen has had it’s aqua-jets removed and the inlet/outlet ports blanked off, as was often the case. Motorplex do have 4 other Stollys including an original FV620 with all it’s amphibious tomfoolery intact. Sadly though, none are ‘runners’ and all were too tightly parked to get cab or 3/4 shots. I still want one though.. Keep your premier league Bentleys, and your pimped Hummers, THIS is what I want to park up when I do the weekly shop!
Chocolate Fudge! The colours of this gleaming Alvis reminded of my favourite chocolate treat, hence the title! Funny – you don’t see many brown motor cars, do you? The car is probably a TA model dating from the late 1940s, when production was restarted after the bombing of the Alvis factory in Coventry by the Luftwaffe during the Second World War. Alvis produced some beautiful, luxurious, reliable and fast motor cars, at a price. The Silver Eagle mascot above the radiator grille identifies the marque. Unfortunately production ceased in 1967, after first Rover, then British Leyland took a controlling interest in the company. However, the Alvis name lives on as a manufacturer of specialist armoured vehicles for the military sector. Here is another of my series of ‘Classic Cars’, this time of an Alvis Speed 20 Car, dating from 1934, pictured at a car meeting in Exeter. Just look at those headlights!
Here is another version of the 1934 Alvis Speed 20 Classic Car. Those massive headlights would have been really bling in 1934!
The white form of Alvie Church in the distance, standing overlooking Loch Alvie, dates back to 1380 and is one of the earliest and most picturesque celtic churches. During renovations in the 19th century 150 skeletons were uncovered. Although thought to have been the victims of a battle there is no documented evidence to suggest a battle ever took place. Strange but true. To view audio-visual clips from all over Scotland and to send free video postcards please feel free to visit My Website
