I’m getting really sick of people using the line “all those pet dog, pets and baby photos” as an indicator of the “rubbish” on RB. The content is irrelevant. There are some damn good “pet” portraits on RB (and yes, some really bad ones) I’m actually quite sick of a photo being considered good because of the content. Taking a photo of an exotic looking person doesn’t make you a genius photographer by default. It just means the person isn’t from your country and so is ‘interesting’. Good for you. It can be much harder to get a GREAT photo of a common subject. You have to work to make it stand out. Blurring the water in a photo doesn’t mean it’s a great photo, having a pretty sunset doesn’t make it a great photo, photographing someone who has a character lined face doesn’t make it a great photo, being naked in it doesn’t make a great photo, taking a photo of an exotic animal doesn’t make it a great photo….on and on I can go. So really, enough with the idea that pets = bad photos. Nothing is great or bad by default, it’s how you take it, YOU make it a great photo, if you can.

  • This is my dog Julie, she really does not like the snow. She is a black lab/flat coated retriever mix. We adopted her from a shelter going on two years ago. We think she was in a kill shelter in down state Illionis. Also they could not tell us to much about where she came from. But my sister and I both think it was a warmer climate then Illionis. She is just the sweetest dog, and to think she could have just been killed, like so many who do not get a home. This photo has been featured once, placed twice in the top ten of two challenges and has been a group Avatar. Featured in Nuts About Mutts 10/18/09

  • [portrait taken in Natural Light] : 16/11/2008 [AS IS] I was walking from one village to the next, in Remote Nigeria. one of the team noticed this young girl following us for some time. I stopped and spoke to her through an interpretor. We learned that she was 13 years old and caring for three younger Sisters. As she told us here story, I Felt compelled to return to her village. There we met her three younger sisters in the most extreme poverty. Both Parents were dead and no other living relatives. We spoke to the village Chief and the elders who pleaded with us to help the family. We did, as God lead us to and blessed her with clothing, and the following day we sent two of our field workers to meet with her and now they have a small regular income from our mission funds. UPDATE 5-8-2009. Mary is now at School. We pay her school fees adn her three younger sisters are well and happy. We need help with Susan, aged 9. She wants to go to school also. We need help with school fees, uniform adn text books. Can you help? will you Help? • Model is Chelsea Rose / Makeup and Hair by Loran Bean / Assistant: Adam People seem to like when I say how I get my shots, so I will keep up with it! We went to the roof of a shopping centre carpark to shoot this series. It was WHITE, it was HOT, it was windy and it was…EXTREMELY HOT! We now all look like beetroots, we’re so red. I made the mistake of lying down on the HOT CONCRETE for about 10 mins for a series of shots. :( But it was worth it! All lighting is natural, no reflectors were used. This shot was one of the last in the day. ‘Chelsea, get in the trolly!’ I make my models do very uncomfortable things sometimes. What’s the worst thing you have made someone do in order to get the best photo? I want to hear your stories :D And as always, comments are always appreciated. xo / Rose

  • It’s OK to dabble in Sin when you’re young, but I know that as the years pass one starts to wonder if there is the possibility that in the after life you actually do have to pay a price. I’ve amused myself over the years with imagining different scenarios the Devil may face when old sinners think about their lives, and what may be waiting for them. I’ve done numerous works on the subject, and I’ve found pen and/or brush and India Ink a perfect medium for my imaginings. Most of the art is 25 cm x 35 cm on good quality cartridge paper, though I often work much larger. This one was achieved with a Mapping Pen, and a Number 2 Sable brush.

  • Mississinewa 1812 Each year my father (Tim Denny) and I take a “photography trip”. Most commonly we go late in the year for Fall colors. This year we spent a week in Indiana, taking photos at a re-enactment and covered bridges of Parke County. The Battle of the Mississinewa, also known as Mississineway, was an expedition ordered by William Henry Harrison against Miami Indian villages in response to the attacks on Fort Wayne and Fort Harrison in the Indiana Territory. The battle is significant as the first American victory in the War of 1812. The site is near the city of Marion, Indiana. Mississinewa 1812 is not a re-enactment of the battle. It is a period re-enactment that captures the lifestyles and military living in the period 1812. If you ever get a chance I totally recommend the event. Trully enjoyable. Over the next several weeks I will be posting images taken at Mississinewa 1812 along with covered bridges from Parke County, Indiana. Please View Larger and Enjoy
