I can still remember my very first camera that my parents had given to me when I was about 8 years old. I took that camera everywhere and snapped shots of anything and everything, however it wasn’t until much later in life that I was really bitten by the photography bug. I was planning a big move to the Canadian Rockies and thought now is the perfect time to buy my new camera gear for shooting wildlife. I bought all the equipment I needed that would put me up close with all the wildlife that the mountains had to offer. So off I went chasing Bears, Bighorn sheep, Moose, Elk and Wolves… pretty much any critter I could capture with my lens. It was a fascinating and thrilling experience. Then fate brought to me a girl and she would change my life forever… Newfoundland is where I now call home, with my beautiful wife and baby son. This province is a photographer’s paradise. The scenes change from day to day and the opportunities for capturing them are endless. With my camera in tow I now begin my journey through Newfoundland, photographing and capturing her raw and rugged beauty to share with the world. I hope you enjoy the photographs presented here. The rugged and treacherous coastlines give way only to the unforgiving North Atlantic Ocean. It is a coastline marked with lighthouses that act as ever watching sentinels to welcome weary travellers home. It is a land of beautiful & quaint coastal towns, villages and cities. Newfoundland is a land visited by frozen giants from the North that create a sense of awe when seen by human eyes as they float down what is known as “Iceberg alley”. It is a land visited by massive whales during the summer that attract multitudes to the shorelines. It is a land rich in history and folklore and it is a land inhabited by a people who will welcome you with open arms. It is a land you need to visit… Newfoundland… In Living Color, captures the raw and rugged beauty of a landscape still yet untouched and marred by man’s corrupt hand. It is a tribute to a true Eden and its people that dwell there. / / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography / / SOME OF MY FAVS / click on the image to link to that image / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /

  • Mystical Snow Gums, on the Great Alpine Road in Victoria , just have to love those trees. The Great Alpine Road meaders through national park landscape of the Victorian Alps. Sale to unknown buyer, matted print

  • Mountain ash are the tallest flowering plant on earth. Before logging became widespread there were even documented cases of 100m plus high trees. I photographed these beauties on Mt Donna Buang in the Yarra Valley outside of Melbourne. As a drum teacher I teach in five different schools every week, thursday being my Upper Yarra Secondary College day. I particularly look foreward to thursdays for the post school jaunt I inevitably do. The Yarra Valley is truly a valley of wonders containing beautiful forests, snow capped peaks (in winter), waterfalls, caves, vineyards and numerous basalt outcrops. A truly special place. Winner of the Abstracts from Nature, Trees in Abstract group challenge 17/9/2008. For more pics from this area check out my Yarra Ranges gallery. • The majestic Mt. Rainier capped with a small cloud as the first light of a new day illuminates the peak and reflects in the still waters of Bench LAke

  • Snow Gum in winter, Lake Mountain, Yarra Ranges NP, Victoria. The bushfires on 7th February 2009 caused considerable damage at Lake Mountain. Much of the forested area was burnt, and almost all buildings except the Day Visitor Centre were destroyed. It’s sadly expected that this tree was also burnt. © Ern Mainka

  • A close up view and from a single image.

  • One more of this series and I will move on to other subjects. This one seemed to retain some warmth and an old time sepia feel without actually using that filter. Thank you all for looking at so many of what seemingly is the same shot, but are not. : )

  • Taken at Mt Hotham in the Victorian Alps. This image has been accepted into the Al-Thani and Austrian Supercircuit international competitions and has been printed in the Austrian catalogue in 2008. and it also got a half page print in the 2008 Al Thani international competition catalogue. Nikon D50 18-200mm VR lens. HDR image made of 3 shots 2 stops apart. Tripod used because the light level was so low. The original images were partially blended back in over the HDR shot.
