In the forgotten alleys of Kashgar there is a quietness, an eerie lack of activity that is a clear manifestation of abandonment. This shot captures a common sight. With money, commerce, growth, development and opportunity in abundance on the ‘Chinese side’ of town, the Uyghurs are left behind. It’s easy and selfish, as a tourist, to be caught up in the ‘romantic’, traditional way of life in which occupied people like the Uyghurs still live. It is important however to step back and appreciate the disgraceful inequality of benifit from prosperity.

Alone is created from pencil and pen on plain 200gsm paper with a bit of smudging around the edges. She was drawn when i didn’t know what i wanted to do with my life and all my friends had gone off to uni. I always feel a little sad when i look at this drawing :)

I painted this in 1970- I was 15yrs. old, it was an acrylics art challenge in art club in my high school,, I won second prize,, / I was thrilled , and actually the one that beat me for 1st prize was an abstract,, which was well deserved,, anyways,, she has been proudly kept by my mother for years,, now she hangs in my home,, I was obviously influenced by the paint by number paintings,, as far as the style I took in this endeavor,, ohhhhh, the memories,, I just had too take her out of her frame,, wash her down and snap a pic for prosperity sake,, LOL,, someday she will be valuable,, at least too my children or grand children,, she is now 39 yrs. old, she still walks in my mind, anytime I am alone, so I guess I felt that way at the time I painted her,, you know that teen stuff, trying to fit in,, so I painted,, thats how I got thru it, and still do.. by the way my grand daughters named her Marie,, my middle name.. / this is 18” x 24” on painters canvas board.. / “she” / “she”
