  • Metamorphosis
    by Bonnie T. Barry

    US$4.99–US$114.00

I was thinking of Julie Langford’s dear mother as I worked on this image, and I kept thinking how we all must undergo metamorphosis as we make the transition from this world where light is exterior to the next world where the interior light of our Maker can finally show through when we shed our caterpillar casing and spread our butterfly wings in the new life.

  • This profound quotation is commonly called St. Teresa’s Bookmark as it was found tucked into one of the great saint’s books. St. Teresa of Avila was a Carmelite nun who lived in Spain and was a great mystic and prolific spiritual writer. I created this image today for three people: for Barbara and Jerry, my mother’s neighbors who lost their home in a fire yesterday. All of their worldly possessions were destroyed in about thirty minutes. Barbara ran out of the house with her purse, her robe and house slippers, and the cup of coffee she was holding when smoke billowed everywhere. The other person I created this for is a friend, Brenda, who emailed me to say she was feeling low and needed a word of encouragement. I thought that these three people who are deeply troubled would be comforted by these words of enduring wisdom and truth. Maybe someone else needs to hear them, too. God help us all to remember that he alone suffices and he alone is unchanging and dependable.

  • It’s absolutely mind-boggling to look at the diversity, the complexity, and the breathtaking beauty of nature. With a phrase borrowed from the great hymn, when I consider all God has made, I should drop to my knees in awe and gratitude before His Majesty. This image began as a shot of an exotic butterfly in an exhibit, and with some work in PhotoShop emerged into my humble rendition of one of the zillions of miracles that come to us from the mind and heart of God.

  • A baby cardinal in the nest is a sight to behold. It makes me think of the Psalmist who wrote, “Out of the mouths of babes, you have fashioned praise.” (Ps 8:3) There’s something about a baby that just brings joy and love to the forefront, joy and love that spring from the Almighty!

  • Psalm 23

  • Lake Martin, Louisiana, at sunset, with a bit of photoshop to help convey an image of the triune God Who looks over us in love and with generous providence. I read just recently that we love to create beauty because we are made in the image and likeness of God. Just as He loves to create, so do we, and it is in this spirit that I dedicate this photo to our Creator who instills in us a beautiful and wondrous creative spirit.

  • Eye has not seen nor ear heard what God has prepared for those who love him. 1 Corinthians 2:9 This male painted bunting is a wonder of creation, a gift God has prepared for our edification and enjoyment!

  • A Child's Prayer

Now before I run to play, / Let me not forget to pray / To God who kept me through the night / And waked me with the morning light. / Help me, Lord, to love thee more / Than I ever loved before; / In my work and in my play / Be thou with me through the day. / Amen

  • This image reminds me that no matter how turbulent life becomes, the good God is our stronghold and our refuge, our only security.

  • Bird images, coupled with verses from the Scriptures or sacred songs, comprise this inspiring calendar for 2009.

  • I don’t think the great Carmelite saint, John of the Cross, was urging us to shut up about our sorrows in this quote; rather, I believe he was reminding us that in the midst of our anguish there is more comfort from the silent Suffering Servant who feels our pain and embraces us within His own than in all the words of frustration, complaint, or explanation we might try to express.

  • They Neither Toil Nor Spin Once in an early morning time when the children were / sleeping and I was enjoying the tranquil beginnings of a new day, I noticed a little squirrel just outside my bedroom window. He was scratching around in search of his breakfast when all of a sudden he caught sight of a luscious find—a plump mushroom that had sprung up almost magically during the rainy hours before dawn. The squirrel nibbled all around the tender cap of the mushroom leaving behind only a naked stem. Not long after, another squirrel appeared. Evidently he wasn’t too persnickety because he chomped eagerly into the leftover stem with great relish, sending bits and pieces flying across the lawn for the next hungry creature that came by. It was an amusing little scenario, but it was also inspiring and instructive. I thought about how those two little squirrels had fallen asleep the night before when there was no mushroom in sight. Most likely they had drifted off peacefully, instinctively relying on the One who always provides. In the morning, they had gone out in search of that provision, had found it and accepted it, not only without complaint, but with exuberance and enthusiasm. Like the lilies of the field, I realized, the squirrels neither toil nor spin, not in the sense that they don’t work, for they do. But, rather in the sense that they do not expend valuable energy and time in needless worry, fretfulness, or grumbling. The next time a need arises in my life and there are / no answers in sight, I hope I’ll think of the lilies of / the field and the squirrels in my yard. I hope that / I too will neither toil nor spin.
